JOSHUA BELL: POET OF THE STRINGS

Sunday, 14 June 2009

This is a cinematic and aesthetically high-quality homage to one of the greatest violin virtuosos of this decade.

Charting the American star violinist Joshua Bell's rise to success, and using his music to explore the man behind the phenomenon, this revealing one-hour special unveils intimate insights into rehearsals coupled with unique, high-quality live recordings from concerts. Pieces featured are from Bell's extensive and individualised repertoire.

A versatile and unconventional artist, 38-year-old Bell lives on adrenaline to deliver over 200 concerts a year. A sex symbol, whose only constant companion is his 1732 Stradivarius, he is one of the few classical artists to satisfy both the critics' demands and audience tastes.

Bell is the recipient of an Oscar and four Grammy awards for his music, which spans 30 albums. Compiled using personal insights and unique archive material, this sensitive portrait profiles an outstanding musician who pushes the boundaries.

Joshua Bell: Poet Of The Strings will be repeated on ABC1 on Sunday, June 21 at 3.55pm.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Executive Producers: Stefan Heinen, Miramedia and Nicole Deblaere, NDR; Producers: Sven Hartung and Dirk Willers; Director: Eva Munstermann. A Miramedia production.

BEN'S ZOONew Series

Wednesday, 17 June 2009

Ben Mee, a man with no previous animal care experience, spends his family's life savings in an attempt to save the zoo animals from death row.

The Dartmoor Wildlife Park in Devon, UK, was preparing itself for the worst. Closed to the public and desperate for new investment, a skeleton staff of dedicated workers remained, some spending their own money to buy food and much needed drugs for the animals.

The keepers knew that the chance of re-housing mature big cats, monkeys and wolves in other zoos was minimal. Unless someone could scrape together the million plus pounds (AUD2 million) needed to buy the zoo, their beloved creatures were just weeks from being destroyed.

At the eleventh hour, they heard the news. Against all the odds, Ben Mee, a writer and DIY expert, and his family had been crazy enough to buy the zoo. This is the story of Ben, his family, the animals, and the struggle to save the zoo animals from death row and re-open it to the public.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Host: Ben Mee; Executive Producers: Belinda Cherrington and Jeremy Bradshaw; Series Producer: Francis Baker. Filmed and directed by Aidan Woodward, Trevor Docksey, and Joyce Trozzo. Tigress Productions and IMG Media Company for BBC.

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE: HOW I GOT MY VASENew Series

Thursday, 18 June 2009

From the producer of Absolutely Fabulous and The Office comes this hit British series based on the wild child memoirs of window-dresser extraordinaire, style arbiter and bestselling writer, Simon Doonan.

Beautiful People is an ever-so-slightly twisted family sitcom that charts 13-year-old young Simon's (Luke Ward-Wilkinson, Wild At Heart) dazzling path that sees him escape suburban Britain and live a glamorous life amongst the 'beautiful people'.

2008, New York. Barneys department store window. Meet dapper Simon (Samuel Barnett, The History Boys) as he ponders his latest window creation. When a prized red vase is knocked by his boyfriend, Simon catches it and memories of home come flooding back - of his eccentric family and adventures with best mate, Kyle 'Kylie' (Layton Williams, Billy Elliott).

1997, Reading. Mum, Debbie (Olivia Colman, Peep Show, The Office), is a peroxide whirlwind of matriarchal warmth and passionate pride for husband Andy (Aidan McArdle, The Duchess) - a plumber-cum-homemade vintner. Blind lodger, Aunty Hayley (Meera Syal, The Kumars at No. 42) and wannabe-ghetto-queen sister, Ashlene (Sophie Ash) complete the Doonan household.

When Simon describes his family with mocking affection in a prize-winning school essay, Debbie decides to quit drinking and prove her son wrong... Can the Doonans ever be normal?

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Written by Jonathan Harvey (Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie); Produced by Justin Davies and executive produced by Jon Plowman (Absolutely Fabulous, The Office, Little Britain) for BBC Two.

TORCHWOOD: EVERYTHING CHANGES

ABC TV PREMIEREFriday, 19 June 2009

The 21st century is when it all changes and you've got to be ready...

Separate from the government, outside the police, beyond the United Nations: Torchwood sets its own rules. Led by the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), the Torchwood team delves into the unknown and fights the impossible.

Alongside the charismatic Captain Jack is Gwen (Eve Myles). Initially an outsider, her first meeting with the team sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth, throwing her into an unfamiliar but exciting world. Clear-thinking and instinctive, she understands people and is, at times, the group's conscience. But can she completely separate herself from her normal life?

The rest of the bold and passionate team is made up of charming medic Owen Harper, young and hedonistic but utterly brilliant; reserved Toshiko Sato who specialises in computers, surveillance and all things technical; the super-intelligent and intense Suzie Costello who has devoted her life to the strange alien artefacts under her control; and Ianto Jones who is far more important that his receptionist's role suggests.

From an underground base built on a rift in time and space, the team responds to any alien threat - a meteorite crash landing, sightings of extra-terrestrial technology, an unusual autopsy report, the spread of a deadly alien virus.

Part CSI, part X-Files, Torchwood is the team we'd all love to be part of, where excitement comes before morality and the rules are made as you go along...

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A BBC production in association with CBC. Written by Russell T Davies, Directed by Brian Kelly

BEING HUMANNEW SERIES

Friday, 19 June 2009

Three supernatural young housemates in their 20s are trying to live as normal. One is a ghost, one a werewolf and the other a vampire.

All are trying to keep their dark side hidden from outsiders, but within their shared house, they can let out their dangerous and strange secrets.

Annie is a ghost, pining after her fiancé whom she was due to marry before the fatal accident at the house that left her with her 'affliction'. Mitchell is a good-looking and laidback vampire and has an easy confidence with females, but he is a blood-sucker struggling against giving in to his vampire cravings. He is also being harassed by a vampire leader constantly trying to lure him back to his deadly habits.

George is an affable hospital porter who turns into a flesh-hungry, predatory werewolf every full moon. He fears for the dangers he presents at large, so agrees to transform within the ‘safety’ of their house, tearing it apart in the process.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Produced by Matthew Bouch and written by Toby Whithouse for BBC Three.
