Page 10: vassaractivists.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewGrassroots Alliance for Alternative Politics Minutes: 2011-2012. Worker Solidarity Meeting (9.26.11)-Mediator delayed, negotiations

-Protesters get upset, start yelling back, the student was at the front, main officer address the student-Police reached in and pulled the student out, threw them on the ground, pinned them down, cuffed them-Arrested w/ another Vassar alum-Inside look at what's going on w/ the cops-Where the cops stand on this whole thing: they seem to be divided. The student's arresting officer went out of the student's way to get them out same day-A lot of officers didn't want to be there anymore than we did-Some of the officers were really mean, some were rude and disrespectful, nerve pinched in hand bec. cuffs were too tight-Protesters singing in the cells the whole time, filled the facility, cops wanted them gone-One cop came up to the student and said they supported us

Occupy Poughkeepsie:-10 ppl wrangled w/ Mic Checks in the Retreat/ACDC-Speakout (mostly Bill)-Thanksgiving event coming up-Tents are too close to the courts-Outreach in the community has yet to occur-Old and young white people, predominantly men (girlfriends and older women)-Very insular group-Drugs/alcohol problems...how do we address them? Realistically, its too tight in timeline to go through the whole process of getting a new provider. Also, different providers won't be much better-Looking at some innovative ways to make them more responsive     -Push for a shorter term, a more probationary type of contract renewal     -More stringent accountability mechanisms-Why can't we do it ourselves?     -Money. Right now we can't even fund the study to bring an expert in to look at costs...     -All the technical components are expensive to insure/supply w/out outside providers, in-house would be more expensive     -We have no definite evidence that it would be better to boot aramark-They are prepared to pull if aramark doesn't meet our demands, they are genuine negotiations-We can't tell aramark what to do (although aramark says they are taking orders from Vassar HR according to Cathy)

Vassar Worker Contract:-Still in negotiations-Time clock still on the table, union still pushing back, not entertaining that-Once a month negotiations, hope the union gets tired, they haven't yet-Probably settle after break

Occupy Poughkeepsie-Thursday, got threatened w/ eviction-Over 100 showed up to defend it-Cops didn't raid it-On Friday, they were told they had to leave at 11, 50 people show up, police don't come back (probably bec. of a shooting)-Saturday night, two fire trucks and SUVs show up, a bored man puts out our coal fire-Sunday night, a text goes out, false alarm-Today at the GA, Julia heard that a bunch of cops had come down during the day to confiscate

Page 13: vassaractivists.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewGrassroots Alliance for Alternative Politics Minutes: 2011-2012. Worker Solidarity Meeting (9.26.11)-Mediator delayed, negotiations

fire making materials, but they had already gotten rid of the stuff-Post GA, councilwoman Johnson came down to talk, told that they want us gone ASAP, but fear bad press, so they are waiting, looking for compromise (keep the park clean/fire free), she was looking for a date for us to leave, dialogue has opened up a little-Outreach efforts going well     -Saturdays at 11 in the CC MPR *this is pending     -Tim working on a outreach flyer     -Thursday noonish, vans leaving from OPK to present case for millionaires tax-GAs addressing occupying a foreclosed home, shits getting real

Leadership/Facilitation Transition:-Abby going to Cameroon, has held a leadership role-Send out emails, rep GAAP, recruit members, Cathy's point person, sort of set meeting agendas, point person for logistics-Maya's advice: a big plus is having a place where people can come to get help on a project-Having a "leader" is important, concentrates responsibility, get's things done-Co-Leadership?-Julia taking over, Alex helping out, and Jordan as well-Two email lists right now, weekly for meeting times and minutes (40 or so people) and mobilization-We should clean those up soon

Conference:-Last time, emphasis of the conference went from "alternatives" to how to build better communities, unite our activism, work together-Had a convo with people in Poughkeepsie about how to better communicate and bridge our gaps

Page 14: vassaractivists.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewGrassroots Alliance for Alternative Politics Minutes: 2011-2012. Worker Solidarity Meeting (9.26.11)-Mediator delayed, negotiations

-Shooting for March-Maybe pick up the "alternatives" thread, Maya wants to bring a midwife/scientist, do a birth/life/death theme-Maybe do urban forging w/ the guy VARC brought in (talk to Alan, pres. of VARC), maybe a mechanic to teach oil changes, etc.-Katia: incorporate health issues with issues of immigration, access, inclusion, create a dialogue (midwife and expert on healthcare access on the same panel together)     -Show people that things they don't think are political are actually very political-Maybe have two conferences, one like the old one (building coalitions), and a separate new one focused on -Maybe do it earlier so we have time to channel the energy1. What are our collective goals, how can we mobilize all students2. How to navigate the VSA3. How to navigate Poughkeepsie-Create a publication out of the conference-Maybe do a show w/ the activist/musicians that Katie has been in touch with-Maybe look into Vassar's investments-We decided to have two conferences

Conference 1 (Building Coalitions):-We would need to have people come back a few days early to flyer, etc.-January 28th is tentative date, that weekend is clear-Get as many orgs as possible, make it collab rather than a moment of glory-Alan suggests we get the calendar up and running, moving into the role of SAU-Conversation about merging orgs, maybe talking about VACA and GAAP coming together or collabing more-Next step: drink and think on Friday to get together at 8:00 at 9 La Grange (Julia's house) to plan further-Thomas will reserve the room just in case

Outreach:-Door knocking this Tuesday and Wednesday with Service Employees Intl. Union rank and file about rally on Thursday w/ Occupy Poughkeepsie-A great way to engage the community about the Occupy Movement, a great way to connect unions and the students, etc. Contact Spencer ([email protected] for more info)-Send out mobilization email (times, places, info about rally, (PS. info about D17) numbers of SEIU contacts, Katia's contact info, Jeff's contact info). Spencer is on it.

General Meeting (2.13.12)

March 1st:-National Day of Action for Education; Occupy Movement and student assemblies through the country (including CA and NYC) are calling for a day of protest and solidarity to confront the crisis in education. See occcupyed.org for more info-Vassar Young Democratic Socialists, Democracy Matters/Rebuild the Dream, and other activists are organizing for a walkout/rally/assembly at Vassar in conjunction with a walkout at Dutchess Community College-We're in the process of getting in touch with dept. heads (so they can contact all professors) and speakers, as well as community members; we have a lot of outreach to do to make this a kick-ass event-We are meeting Thursday at 8PM in the Jewett MPR to continue oranizing for M1, will send a reminder email to GAAP-Steve (President Political Science Club at DCC):     -DCC has Hist. Dept. on board, a lot of faculty sympathy     -Have a meeting tomorrow     -Tried connecting with Bard and Marist     -Have a unifying place for both students to meet for a rally     -There is some admin crackdown on Occupy efforts     -Alliance for Quality Education-Talk about what's going on in Arizona w/ the ethnic studies-Education dept. Kate Olsen, look for info from Thomas-Invite a teachers union? Katia has concerns about the PK Teacher's Union, need to have a conversation about these issues-Do a press release, contact PoJo and Midhudson News-Stay in touch w/ DCC about sharing supplies/time to make a banner-GAAP will support it with activists and some money (consensus on both)

Rich Hutnik and a Hudson Valley Conference:-Discussion at OPK was to do an Occupy Hudson Valley (right now a small group doing phone calls)-Have a regional assembly-Regional summit for any civic, religious, political org, to meet together to do a conference, have a GA, set up tables, etc.-Make it big during the summer, use farm land, have a big revival type thing-Sort of like the GAAP Conference, writ large, on a Hudson Valley scale-Occupy is going to have to do a lot of leg work on this-GAAP can help, esp. in the PK area-Katia: Vassar is not a neutral place, we should actively look for other sites-Get a group to begin doing this outreach-Do small conferences leading up to a big get-together-Steve: OPK did a rally coordinating w/ Moveon.org, but there is difficulty getting different orgs to come together, it requires a lot of contacting, networking, and time-Work on this on Feb. 24th activist assembly

Page 19: vassaractivists.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewGrassroots Alliance for Alternative Politics Minutes: 2011-2012. Worker Solidarity Meeting (9.26.11)-Mediator delayed, negotiations

-Stay after and talk with Rich if you're interested, or email him: [email protected]

Financial Transparency at Vassar:-Rocky wants to have a GAAP led effort to find out where our endowment is invested-John Joyce has pointed her to a senior friend (Anna) who is interested in donating in the future, who sat down w/ Cappy-Cappy was dismissive of financial transparency, she doesn't have any idea where the money is, we have 10-12 portfolio managers, we are likely invested in almost all big corporations, Cappy doesn't see the need to divest in any corporation, concerned about keeping it need blind and believes if we divest that will be threatened, there have only been two known divestment campaigns (Apartheid in South Africa, and from Sudan), we will have to have a few targeted companies worth divesting from, and be willing to mobilize to exert some pressure-We need to do some research on our own-Maybe get in contact with students in other schools (Yale, etc.) who have done work like this in the past-Talk to Steve Dahmert, maybe have Anna continue this (she's the one who had that discussion w/ Cappy), Rocky will email GAAP to see who wants to sit in (keep it small though)-GAAP's goal: long-term financial transparency, can then choose specific companies from there

Page 20: vassaractivists.files.wordpress.com …  · Web viewGrassroots Alliance for Alternative Politics Minutes: 2011-2012. Worker Solidarity Meeting (9.26.11)-Mediator delayed, negotiations

-Overall goal is just to see where we're investing, and then move from there-How to see where/how our endowment is investment-It's unclear who the best person to talk to is     -Invest advisory committee (Faculty/student/admin/board of trustees), charged with researching and investigating the companies we're investing in          -Formed in response to main takeover during Apartheid era, run under Board of Trustees (not VSA)          -Chain of command is unclear, but they do have control; its a voting committee, can divest by vote          -Jason Rubin, Travis Edwards, and a third at large member (getting appointed soon), Betsy, Cappy are on it-Charlie can get a list of names to us (via Rocky)-Committee meets at the end of the year-It is a sealed committee; they need to demonstrate a reason for this-Info might be lacking because the firms we're working w/ don't always divulge on the info how the returns they're bring back to us-Talk to Betsy Eismeier, Senior officer of finance-Charlie will bring this back to the VSA Exec Board     -Cappy's concerns with accessibility are a little overblown     -All these corporations are in to bad stuff, there will always be compromises, but some compromises are better than others-Look at peer insitutions-Check in with the people on the board, from there look at a VSA petition, figure it out from there-Check in w/ Responsible Endowments Coalition-Have a member of GAAP run for the at large committee

March 1st:-M1 is a national day of action for education. Education is a right not a privilege. We're walking out and rallying on Thursday March 1st, skip your classes, go to quad at 11:30, hear some speeches, march, get together and talk, and meet up with DCC students-More info: http://www.facebook.com/events/228731620554581/-Even more info: occupyed.org-Next meeting Thursday at 8 in the Jewett MPR, if you are interested-Shit that needs doing: tabling (Friday, and guerrilla tabling next week), paint banners Saturday at 2PM on (contact Alex Deane), flyering     -Contact Alex Deane and or Spencer Resnick-Set up a bunch of meetings w/ Administrators   -Roellke: talk w/ president of VSA, talk to Dean of Faculty     -Pittman: ALl college day this Weds (1:30-3), we could probably have a table in the retreat          [email protected] to reserve a table-We will be contacting on the chairs in the depts., you should be able to make up work in most departments-Flyering plan: flyers should be printed by Weds or Thursday, come Thursday to get an assignment, if you can't make that send an email to [email protected], or check the VSA mailbox under GAAP

New Campaign:-Campaign to get rid of the felony box in Vassar's hiring application-Idea behind it is that felony check-box is one of many systematic ways that formerly incarcerated people are kept out of mainstream society-Talk to faculty who know about it, talk to VPI, anticipate push back-Connected to "Liberation Summer," organizing a mass mobilization against institutional racism (Ethan is going to be working on that every weekend in NYC)-The New Jim Crow, discussion at the Family Partnership Center (Library)
