Speakers’ Biographies

Lieve Wierinck, MEP Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE)

Lieve Wierinck is a Flemish politician for the

liberal Open VLD party. Mrs Wierinck holds

a pharmaceutical degree from the VUB. In

addition, she obtained a Post-graduate

degree of Pharmaceutical management in

2006 at the University of Hasselt. In line

with her academic background, she owned

and managed a pharmacy for nearly 30

years. Before joining the European

Parliament, Lieve was leader of the party fraction in Zaventem, followed by her

twelve-year presidency of the OCMW (Public Centre for Social Welfare), where she

managed a staff of 150 people. She combined this with her obligations as a full time

member of the City Council of Zaventem. From December 2011 until June 2014, she

was a member of the Belgian Federal Parliament, where she was a member of the

Committee for Public Health, Environment and Social Renewal, and of the Advisory

Committee on Societal Emancipation. In May 2016, Lieve replaced Mr. Philippe De

Backer as a Member of the European Parliament, where she is a full member of the

Industry, Technology, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) and a substitute

Member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary affairs (ECON). Lieve also

works on topics surrounding healthcare, as she strives for a progressive and

affordable healthcare in Europe.

Andrzej Rys, Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE),

European Commission

Andrzej Rys is a medical doctor specialised in radiology

and public health, graduate of Jagiellonian University in

Krakow, Poland. He is the Director responsible for health

systems, medical products and innovation in the

Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety in the

European Commission since 2011. He is also an alternate

member of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Board.

He is the Founder of the School of Public Health at the

Jagiellonian University and he was Director in this School

from 1991 to 1997. From 1997 to 1999, he was Director of

Krakow’s city Health Department. From 1999 to 2002, he

was Deputy Minister of Health in Poland and a member of

the Polish accession negotiators team. In 2002, he founded the Center for

Innovation and Technology Transfer at Jagiellonian University. He was also Director

there. From 2006 until today, he is working for the European Commission first as

Director for Public Health and Risk Assessment in the Directorate-General for Health

and Consumers and now as the Director for Health systems, medical products and

innovation in DG SANTE.



Lilian M. Azzopardi, European Association for Faculties of Pharmacy (EAFP)

Lilian M. Azzopardi, Bpharm(Hons), Mphil, MRPharmS,

FFIP graduated as a pharmacist in 1994. She has

practised in hospital and community pharmacies and in

quality departments in pharmaceutical manufacturing

companies. She is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice

and Head of Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of

Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta. She

has spearheaded major developments in pharmacy

education particularly in the area of education that

supports interprofessional learning and development.

She coordinated experiential learning for pharmacy

students within medical firms and has been leading the

innovative postgraduate international doctorate in pharmacy offered by the Faculty

of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Malta in collaboration with the University

of Illinois at Chicago. She has published several papers and books mainly related to

quality systems, pharmacist interventions in patient care focusing on collaborative

practices and pharmacy education. She served as an ad-interim Director and a

member of the Publications Committee of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy

and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta.

In 2014 she was elected President of the European Association of Faculties of

Pharmacy and her term was been re-confirmed in May 2018. She was co-chair of

the working group of the FIP Nanjing Statements on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical

Sciences Education launched in 2016.

Janusz Janczukowicz, Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE)

Janusz Janczukowicz, MD, PhD, MME is the International

Association for Medical Education – AMEE Executive

Committee member with special responsibility of

developing cooperation with the other health-care

professions. He is also working with the European Board

of Medical Assessors and the Association for Medical

Schools in Europe. He is the member of the Global

Teaching Excellence Award Strategy Group and the

Editorial Board member of the Medical Teacher Journal.

His special areas of expertise apart from interprofessional

education are intercultural competence, diversity,

inclusiveness and medical, and academic professionalism. Janusz is the Head of

Centre for Medical Education and that Chair of Best Evidence Medical Education

International Collaboration Centre at the Medical University of Lodz.



Didier Jourdan, Global Health and Education UNESCO Chair

Didier Jourdan is Chair holder of the UNESCO

Chair/WHO Collaborating Centre “Global Health

and Education”. The Chair aims to promote

research and training, to contribute to building,

interpreting and disseminating the knowledge base

in the field of health education and health

promotion. Didier Jourdan, PhD, PhD, HDR is also

Full Professor, former Dean of the Faculty of

Education and Vice-President of Blaise Pascal

University in France. He used to be Director of the

Health Promotion Division of the French National

Public Health Agency and is one of European’s leading expert in public health.

Recently, he was appointed as the co-chair of the scientific committee of the high-

level conference of the World Health Organization in Paris in December 2016. Didier

Jourdan advises organizations, NGOs and the private sector on new directions and

innovations in two fields: children and adolescent health, governance for health and

public health on the one hand and university governance and quality management

on the other hand.

Telmo Baptista, European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA)

Telmo Mourinho Baptista, PhD is currently the

President of the European Federation of

Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) representing 37

European countries. He is currently a Professor of

Psychotherapy at the University of Lisbon, Portugal,

Department of Psychotherapy, as well as a

Psychotherapist and Health Psychologist. Telmo

currently serves as the President of the Portuguese

Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

He is the founder of the national organisation of the

Portuguese Psychologists - Ordem dos Psicólogos

Portugueses (Order of Portuguese Psychologists) of which he became the first

President (2009-2016). Additionally he was the President of the Ibero-American

Federation of Psychologists Association (FIAP) from 2012-2014, and founder and

President of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Federation of Psychology Association

(PSIPLP). Telmo Mourinho Baptista has been a representative of psychological

organisations at several governmental and NGO levels.



Kaisa Immonen, European Patients Forum Kaisa Immonen is the Director of Policy in European Patients Forum (EPF). A Finnish native, Kaisa holds an MA in International Relations and Conflict Resolution from the University of Kent at Canterbury in the UK and a BA in International Relations from the University of Tampere in Finland. She has previously worked in the private (financial) and NGO (culture

and health) sectors in the UK and in Cyprus. In her previous role, she was responsible for the coordination of European policy work and liaised with EU-level partner organisations and the Commission. She also has a background in external communications/marketing and relationship management.
