When asked, I can’t really explain how or where I get my inspiration; it just comes to me. For example, last week I had an inspirational experience that challenged my sanity. It happened during my 30 minute ferry ride from Bainbridge Island to Seattle. I was in my car near the back end of the ferry. Even though I was about 300 feet back, I could clearly see to the front of the boat. It gave me a bird’s eye view between the cars all the way up to the front bulkhead. After looking at the bulkhead for a few minutes, I saw a large square with gray, pale yellow, and white shapes and lines. The longer I looked, my vision became more clear. After continuously looking at the piece for about 15 minutes, I realized it was a Richard Diebenkorn painting. Now this didn’t really surprise me, because the ferry system has been adding advertising everywhere on the ferries to help defray costs. While enjoying the painting, I began sketching the composition and mapped the color, shapes, and placements. It was truly a beautiful piece. When the boat started to slow down as it came into the dock. I could feel my excitement build. I started to drive off the ferry, and when I was within four cars from my painting, the color started to fade. Seeing it up close, I was so startled that I almost drove into another car. I discovered that my Diebenkorn was a yellow hose, a gray bulkhead wall, and a flat area of white paint. I couldn’t believe that mess was my Diebenkorn. I still wonder where it really went! ~ Suzy Richard Diebenkorn, Ocean Park #16, from the Ocean Park Series, 1967-85. President’s Message Over the years, I have noticed my non-art friends having a hard time understanding how and where I get my art ideas. When asked, I can’t really explain how or where I get my inspiration; it just comes to me. For example, last week I had an inspirational experience that challenged my sanity. Suzy Keuckelhahn welcomed guests and new members. Suzan Fant, standing in for Meg Gray, gave the treasurer’s report.Gail Larson reported that the Cancer LifeLine Center was pleased with the show and the turnout at the reception. The show has been extended until August. She had prospectuses available for the Sequim Show and for the NCS Postcard Show. The Shoreline Arts Festival has asked NWCS to participate with a collage activity for the public. NWCS volunteers may display their art for the dur-ation of the Festival, June 28 – 30.Wendy Lee Lynds announced that meeting minutes will not be read at meetings, but available for review in a notebook. Anne LaFever circulated the new roster for members to make corrections and additions. Candice Christie announced the NWCS Collage Retreat at Warm Beach, Feb 28 – March 2, 2014. Deposits will be accepted at the September general meeting. Stacey Hamm discussed space for group collage activity at ArtWorks in Edmonds. Dorothy Mayhew won the April collage. Ellen Ziegler presented slides and her current work with varied forms of art books.

Meeting HighlightsApril 16, 2013 Our April presentation featured

artist Ellen Ziegler sharing her personal art books. Ellen talked about having a "collage state of mind", wherein you combine several items to create a story. She recycles bits that she collects from everywhere (including the sidewalk), and manipulates prints and papers to make "incidental books", spontaneous small book creations, each one unique and original.

Ellen came to art books quite simply; she was "stuck" in her art, so she made a book. Sometimes her books are "project pages" that are not bound but fit into small folders or cases that she finds or makes. Ellen periodically teaches a popular class called "WD-40® for the Creative Soul: how to get unstuck". You can see more of her work at www.ellenziegler.com

Next year we members will be given the opportunity to share our creativity for each other. Twice during the year, in the fall and in the spring, a design problem will be presented; we will then have until the next meeting to complete a piece answering the parameters provided.

Bring the piece (no need to have it framed) to the following meeting, where we will be reminded of what the challenge was, and silently vote on the most successful solution-—the winner will be the members’ choice. A small monetary prize will be presented to the winning artist.

Catch the Challenge! by Meg Gray

Collage Portraits and Beyondby Elizabeth Halfacre

! My collage process is one of discovery. I construct and deconstruct, layer images and materials, then sand surfaces to achieve interesting textures. I enjoy creating grounds with a "distressed" quality because of their associations with the past. ! Although the sources for my portraits are personal, I'd like the viewer to identify with a time, a place, a mood or emotion. I invite introspection; a pose, a gesture, a landscape feature or architectural element might remind the viewer of their own experiences. I incorporate these kinds of experiences within my art, layering images to evoke memories and dreams. Many of the images I use reference my personal history— I think of them as personal artifacts. ! My process is evident in the physical qualities of the collage: planning sketches and underpainting remain, edges of forms are left unfinished for the viewer to complete. The grid structure allows me to align elements and contrast the flatness of the picture plane with the illusory space. I rely on instinct and inner experience as I work; my challenge lies in being intensely conscious yet still in touch with unconscious sources. ! Elizabeth Halfacre's work may be seen in the group exhibit "Head to Toe: Art of the Human Figure". For more information, see her website: http://www.elizabethhalfacre.com

Thank you to all members who participated in the CLL Poetry and Collage Exhibit.  We had a wonderful response to the invitation by CLL to celebrate their fortieth year. The artwork was well received, and the creation of a book with the poems and collages from this exhibit has been suggested as a possibility. The reception was well attended and we were all moved by the reading of poems by members of the CLL writers group. There are seventy collages in this exhibit and several pieces have been sold. To see more photos from the reception click here.
