‘Fastest SUV in the World’ after beating their

previous record of 282 km/h. Using a Porsche

Cayenne Turbo fitted with Proxes S/T and

prepared by Swiss tuning company SPORTEC,

Toyo tyres broke the World Speed record for an

SUV at Germany’s High speed oval course, the

ATP-Automotive Testing Papenburg. The Porsche

Cayenne reached an amazing 308.435 km/h,

which equates to 191.65 mph!

Fast on the track, the road legal Proxes R888 is the most

sophisticated track day tyre offering maximum performance.

Proxes R888 boasts an outstanding handling compound which

delivers optimum results in the dry and wet. The medium

hard compound performs significantly better than most soft

compound tyres.

The improved performance over the other soft compound track

tyres stem from the advanced casing design developed by Toyo’s

motorsport team and the sophisticated compounds employed.

The Proxes R888 is available in a range of sizes and this is

growing to encompass even more popular fitments. Latest

additions will be added to the website on www.toyo.co.uk.

Testing has been conducted at Toyo’s own proving ground in

Japan as well as the UK to ensure the tyres perform well in more

familiar conditions.

Some road legal track tyres have to provide warnings about their

use in the wet. Whilst not designed as a wet tyre, the Proxes

R888 out performs other track tyres here too. If there is a deluge

after a day’s track action, drivers can rely on its performance to

get home on public roads.

Proxes T1-R boasts a special performance compound

and tread pattern which gives incredible road holding in all

conditions, especially in the wet. The V-shaped grooves in the

tread pump water away allowing the rubber to grip the road.

Uneven tyre wear and its causes

Look at the tread on your tyre. Is it evenly worn right across

its width? If not, it could be due to under-inflation or over-

inflation, which we’ve already covered. However, if it’s worn

only around one edge, particularly on the front tyres, it may

be because of poor wheel alignment or other mechanical

problems.

Have a professional garage check out your car’s wheel

alignment and suspension; if there’s a problem with either of

these you should have them fixed immediately.

Wheel balancing

An unbalanced wheel can literally shake your car to bits and

cause serious mechanical damage, not to mention being

extremely annoying. Reputable tyre dealers will balance your

wheels as a matter of course when they replace your tyres,

but it never hurts to ask if they’ve done it. Also make sure

they replace the tyre valves and refit the protective dust caps.

Don’t forget your spare!

You may never use it, but always ensure your spare

is properly inflated and in good condition. A problem is better

discovered in the safety and comfort of your driveway, rather

than by the side of a rain-lashed motorway.

It’s easy to take your tyres for granted. Out of sight for

much of the time, they can also slip out of mind. But tyres

are crucial to your driving safety – they’re the sole point

of contact between your car and the road surface – so it

doesn’t pay to take chances with them.

Just like your car’s oil and water, you should check your tyres

on a regular basis, at least once a fortnight. And not just to

see if they’ve worn through to the canvas yet! You need to

check if the pressures are right, that there are no obvious

signs of damage to the sidewalls or tread, and that the valves

and valve caps are in good condition.

We’ve compiled this brief but vital guide to looking after the

health of your tyres. There may seem to be a lot to check

over, but in reality it shouldn’t take you more than a few

minutes. And what’s a few minutes when your life, and that of

your family, could be at stake.

Tyre pressures...

A tyre doesn’t have to look flat to be under-inflated, so

check its pressure at least once every couple of weeks. If

you can, buy a digital pressure gauge from your local car

accessories store. You’ll find what pressures your car needs

in its handbook – if in doubt, ask your local Toyo stockist for

help. Pressures will vary depending on how fast you drive

and what sort of load you carry in your car, for instance extra

luggage load when you’re setting off on a family holiday.

Remember that pressures should only be checked when your

tyres are cold – give them an hour or so to cool down.

...and why they need to be right

Driving with under-inflated or over-inflated tyres will affect

the way your car rides, steers, handles and brakes; it could

become very unstable and difficult to drive. Tyre wear will

also increase. So not only are the wrong pressures potentially

dangerous, they’ll hurt your pocket, too.

Tread depth

The deeper the tread your tyres have, the more grip they’ll

give, especially in the wet. So although the government’s

minimum legal tread depth limit is 1.6mm (in the main

grooves in the central three-quarters of the tyre), it makes

sense to replace your tyres before they get that low.

If you’re uncertain how to measure the tread depth, have a

word with your friendly local Toyo stockist. Another way to

check how your tyres are wearing is to look for the Tread

Wear Indicators.

These are the lateral raised rubber strips in the bottom of the

tread grooves – when the main tread is at

the same level as these, then you’ve reached the

legal minimum.

Not only is it daft to ignore the minimum tyre tread depth, it’s

illegal; you can be fined up to £2500 for each defective tyre

and receive three penalty points for each of them, too. Don’t

gamble with your life or your bank balance.

‘T MODE’ – The Future of Tyre Design

All new tyres start their life these days inside a computer and here at Toyo we have just introduced an important new development in computer-aided tyre design – we call it ‘T mode’. It’s a hugely complicated and revolutionary system, but in the simplest terms it allows us to simulate the precise behaviour of both a new tyre and the particular vehicle it’s fitted to.

That final capability is the most significant aspect of ‘T mode’. There are now so many different types of car available, from tiny city cars to huge off-roaders, that tyres need to be tailored specifically for them. We’ve analysed a wide variety of vehicles in every sort of road and driving conditions – cornering, accelerating, braking, lane-changing, straight-line driving at high speed, on wet, damp and dry surfaces, the car running empty or with a full load – and fed the data into the ‘T mode’ computers.

The analysis gained from the cars is then integrated with the behavioural patterns of the tyre; Toyo has years of experience in the detailed simulation of tyre behaviour, from the movement of individual sections of tread, to sidewall vibration and stresses, to frictional forces and loadings.

Armed with this combination of data, our engineers can then ‘drive’ the tyre and car in virtual reality, monitoring the performance of each to see where changes in the design of the tyre could be made.Not only does this considerably speed up the development process, it allows our engineers the freedom to exercise their creativity, try out newideas, in ways not previously possible.

The end result? Even higher quality tyres tailoredmore closely to your needs and those of your car.

Steel Belted As with ‘R’ this refers to the tyre’s construction. ‘Steel belted’ is a particular form

of radial construction.

Dot The type approval mark of the American Department of Transport, letting you know our tyres

have passed its rigorous testing procedure and a further guarantee of quality.

You want to fit lower profile tyres – but which ones are most suitable? To find out, simply look up your original tyre size, take a note of its overall diameter in mm, then find tyres of a lower profile that are approximately (within a few mm) the same diameter.

Try to choose a tyre of an overall diameter closest to that of your original tyre, in order to maintain your car’s gearing and the accuracy of its speedometer. The fact that a tyre is of a similar diameter does not necessarily mean it will fit.

Bear in mind the Following Points:1. Check the load capacity and speed rating are suitable for the car2. Ensure there is adequate clearance from bodywork and mechanical components3. Make sure the rim size and offset of the wheel are correct for the tyre and car4. Changing to a lower profile tyre will affect the ride quality and large changes could adversely affect the handling or cause tramlining 5. Ensure the Tyre Pressures are adequate for the Tyre/Vehicle.6. If in any doubt please consult Toyo Technical Division, your wheel supplier, or your local Toyo Key Dealer7. If vehicle is equipped with ABS the overall diameter should be closely maintainedThis conversion table is based on Toyo and ETRTO Overall Diameters. The suggested conversions are within +2% or -3% of an 80-series tyre.
