Global Economic and Markets Outlook

The current economic expansion, now five years old, has passed through an

inflection point with the Federal Reserve beginning to scale back stimulus. How

will the economy evolve in a different policy climate, and how do conditions in

the US compare with developments in other advanced economies? Will

emerging economies continue to struggle? Prospects for lower investment

earnings over the long term continue to pressure underwriting results. The

answers to these questions have significant implications for Chief Investment

and Financial Officers as they address the issues of profitability, premium

growth, underwriting performance, financial strength, ratings and capital

adequacy. This session provides an up-to-the moment view of financial market

trends and outlooks that will help you as a Chief Investment Officer deepen

your understanding of the current economic environment.

Michael Hood, Global Markets Strategist J.P. Morgan Asset Management

Michael Hood, Global Markets Strategist within the institutional business at J.P.

Morgan Asset Management, provides analysis of and commentary on the

economy and asset allocation to institutional investors of all types. He writes

frequent “Global View” commentaries as well as stand-alone publications on

economic and market topics. He also maintains forecasts for global growth,

inflation, and policy interest rates, and contributes to the firm’s long-term

capital markets assumptions process.

He came to JPMAM in October 2011 from Traxis Partners, a USD1bn+ macro

hedge fund based in New York. There, he served as chief economist from 2007

to 2011, maintaining detailed forecasts for global variables. He produced a

monthly global outlook publication and frequent stand-alone pieces on a range

of developed and emerging-market economic issues.

Previously, he worked as an economist and market strategist at Barclays Capital

(within the emerging markets research department) and the JPMorgan

investment bank (within the economic research department). At JPMorgan, he

began, in 1994, as an economist for several Latin American countries. Later, he

oversaw JPMorgan’s Latin American economic research effort and helped

coordinate the department’s global views. He contributed to and helped edit

many JPMorgan publications, including the weekly “Global Data Watch” and

quarterly “World Financial Markets.” He also created and edited the quarterly

“Latin American Economic Outlook” publication. At Barclays Capital, where

he worked from 2004 to 2007, he worked on a combination of economic and

market-strategy topics within emerging markets, again writing for and helping

edit a variety of publications. While at JPMorgan and Barclays Capital, he

frequently traveled to Latin America and spoke to a wide range of clients,

including institutional investors, corporations, and private equity sponsors.

He began his career in the research department at the Federal Reserve Bank of

New York, where he worked from 1992 to 1994 on a variety of international-

finance and developing-country topics. In this capacity, he wrote many country-

risk studies used by federal bank regulators.


What Your Peers are Thinking

As a Chief Investment Officer, you play a prominent role in maximizing the

company’s investment portfolio health and value. You must monitor and

adapt to changing marketing conditions, all while having a strong hold on

your company’s portfolio performance and risk characteristics and compliance

with investment guidelines. With this includes identification, development,

and implementation of strategies and initiatives to enhance your portfolio’s

performance, and improve the processes your investment team employs. This

presentation will focus on the results and analysis from a peer benchmarking

survey of insurance financial and investment executives (chief financial

officers and chief investment officers). This investment-related survey focuses

on important topics such as common challenges, board reporting, compliance

monitoring, types of investments, software budgets, and other factors that are

top of mind for senior management. The results being presented will include

demographic data, key findings, as well as similarities and differences among

a variety of types and sizes of U.S.- based insurance companies. This will give

you a macro-level understanding of investment trends and the opportunity to

evaluate how your company compares to your peers.

Clearwater Analytics

Brian King has been part of Clearwater’s sales team since early 2011. His

primary responsibility is working with prospects to identify areas for

improvement related to investment accounting and portfolio reporting. Brian

has a strong understanding of prevalent needs in the market and how treasury

teams can improve their overall investment portfolio processes. Brian works

predominantly with companies in the insurance and corporate treasury markets

and has successfully implemented new processes with names like Adobe,

NIKE, Hawaiian Airlines and GARMIN.

Brian holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing

from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder.

When Brian is not out traveling the country working with companies on

accounting and investment processes, he can be found spending time with his

beautiful wife and dog in the mountains surrounding Boise, Idaho.


Rating Agencies’ Views on Insurers’ Investment Strategies, Portfolios

The operating environment for insurers has seen an unprecedented level of

volatility and uncertainty since the financial crisis, and Chief Investment

Officers are acutely aware of the challenges in constructing and managing an

asset portfolio that will perform well in this environment. The rating agencies

are understandably viewing insurers’ investment strategies (and portfolios) with

an extremely critical eye. Michael A. Cohen, Principal of Cohen Strategic

Consulting and former head of A. M. Best’s life insurance rating group, will

share his views on the rating agencies’ perspectives on insurers’ investment

strategies and how insurers can both optimize their investment results and get

the most favorable analytical feedback from the rating agencies.

Michael A. Cohen is Principal of Cohen Strategic Consulting. He

advises insurance companies on optimizing their prospects with the

rating agencies, leveraging his executive/leadership role at A. M. Best

Company. He provides expert testimony on insurance industry rating

matters that win legal proceedings. He utilizes his broad insurance

expertise gained during his 30 years of successful senior executive

industry experience to assist companies to improve their performance

in the areas of strategic planning, enterprise risk management,

mergers and acquisitions, business development and competitive

tactics. Mr. Cohen is a frequent speaker at industry conferences on

strategic, risk management and ratings issues.

For many years, Mr. Cohen was Vice President at A. M. Best

Company, where he headed the rating division that analyzed the

entire U. S. life insurance industry, evaluating the financial strength,

operating performance and business profiles of those companies. As

one of the senior officers in the ratings division at A. M. Best, he sat

on committees that determined claims paying and debt ratings for all

insurance organizations worldwide. In addition to these duties, he

authored A. M. Best industry publications and research reports,

contributed to its information products and developed industry

statistical studies.


Portfolio Construction: Considerations in

Today’s Investment Environment

In today’s evolving investment climate, we examine both strategic and

tactical portfolio construction. During this session we will consider the

balance between risk management and exploiting investment opportunities

across the yield curve. Furthermore, the discussion will review tools that

can be incorporated into the asset allocation process including tax model

and asset/liability modeling. Our expert investment managers will guide

you through a decision framework as you contemplate investment

strategies in your portfolio.

Marco A. Bravo, CFA, is a Principal and Senior Portfolio Manager at AAM

with over 20 years of investment experience. Marco currently manages

portfolios for a number of the firm’s P&C and LIFE clients and is also co-

author of AAM’s Monthly Economic Outlook. Prior to joining AAM, Marco

worked for Templeton Management LTD. as an investor services advisor.

Marco is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago.

Marco has been a frequent guest speaker at various insurance association

meetings and conferences. Marco earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance

from the University of Toronto.


Closing the Loop: Making Investment Decisions

The Chief Investment Officer Roundtable program culminates in an applied

discussion of the ideas presented. Using audience response technology, the

audience will participate in polling to utilize the day’s information for actual

investment decisions. The audience will build a model fixed income portfolio

and compare areas of agreement and disagreement. Additionally, there will be

polling questions as part of a competition to reinforce the key ideas presented.

The investment environment creates many questions for a CIO to consider?

How much impact should an economic forecast have on portfolio decisions?

Is the changing regulatory environment more or less constraining? What is an

appropriate balance for asset classes such as equities and fixed income? What

are the key risk measures that need reporting and review? Finally, how do you

construct a fixed income portfolio in low yield, central bank influenced capital

markets?

Prime Advisors, Inc.

Frank joined Prime in 1994 and is a member of its Investment Committee. He

oversees the Investment Strategy Group in Windsor, CT that focuses on

creating investment strategies within the constraints of insurance operational

requirements.

Frank’s specific areas of expertise include economics, enterprise risk

management, performance attribution, and portfolio management.

Frank graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in

Operations Research and Industrial Engineering.
