The oil pipeline explosion, which caused a major fire near the village of

Buri on Friday night, was the result of an Iran-backed terrorist act, Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said yesterday.

“Evidence gathered by the inspection team confirms that this was an intentional act carried out by terrorists to undermine the security of the Kingdom,” he said in a statement to the Police Media Centre.

“This is the latest example of a terrorist act carried out by terrorists in direct contact with, and under instruction from, Iran,” the minister said.

“Evidence gathered during the investigation confirmed that this was an act of terrorism designed to undermine the security of the Kingdom and its citizens. Further investigation is currently underway to identify the perpetrators of the crime and to bring them to justice. The Public Prosecution was informed of the incident,” the minister said.

The oil pipeline exploded on the southern sides of Buri village, opposite to Souq Waqif Area and Hamad Town in the Northern Governorate, on Friday

evening. The fire lasted for a couple of hours,

caused no injuries to the residents of the village but damaged nearby homes and vehicles.

The minister visited the site on Friday to personally coordinate the relevant departments in the ministry to douse the blaze and secure the area, citizens and residents. He was accompanied by Chief of Public Security Major General Tariq Al Hassan and other ministry officials.

It was a night of horror for the residents of Buri on

Friday.Mohammd Jalal, a resident

in the area, said he was chatting with some friends in the vicinity of his house, around 200 metres from the accident site, when he heard the explosion.

“I was shocked when I saw the flames rising high in the sky. I ran towards my house as all my concern was to save my family. I didn’t even feel my foot getting hurt on the asphalt as I ran barefoot. We took women and children and the elderly out and away from the nightmare. It was as if the sky was burning and raining oil,” Jalal said, describing the scene as the village sky was

covered with flames and crude oil dripped.

“The sound of the explosion shook the windows and doors of the house. We saw a huge pillar of flame moving towards Al Amal Hospital, my workplace, which is not far away from where we live,” said Dr. Radhika Lekshmi. Radhika and her husband lived 100 metres away from the site.

“We spent the night here along with other residents, until the situation was brought under control. And, we returned home only today morning. It was a night of real horror,” she added, recalling the horrific moments of the accident.

The residents had removed all the gas cylinders from homes to prevent any further damage. One of the residents used his truck to remove the gas cylinders and keep them

safe at an open yard, far away from the accident site, said Sayed Mohammed, another resident.

Record TimeLt. Gen. Shaikh Rashid lauded the Civil Defence firefighters for reporting to the scene of the accident in record time of three minutes, securing the residents and swiftly extinguishing the flames.

The minister confirmed that the cooling process is now complete, mitigating any risk of re-ignition, adding that “Interior Ministry’s utmost priority is the safety and security of all citizens and residents” and that it will “spare no effort to maintain public safety”.

Effective cooperationThe situation was handled in

cooperation between the Civil Defence Directorate and the Safety and Security Teams of Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco). The effective cooperation between Bapco and the Civil Defence teams was praised by the minister, who also thanked the residents of Buri for their cooperation with the authorities in a press statement yesterday.

Bapco teams stopped the flow of oil through the affected pipeline immediately following notification of the incident, while the firemen continued their efforts to extinguish the flames, which “reached a height of 50 metres” according to Civil Defence General Director

Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Amer.

Shops, vehicles damagedExplaining more on the details of the incident, Brig. Al Amer confirmed that the initial details showed 12 houses, four shops and 28 vehicles were damaged by the scorching heat. He explained that the vehicles were unevenly damaged and that they were parked on the roads of Buri, inside home garages and on the opposite side near Souq Waqif.

“The incident was reported at around 10:16 pm and the firefighting teams reached the spot within 10:19 pm. Two pipes near the burning pipeline were cooled down by the teams. Big quantities

of oil were leaked, around 1, 000 litres. A special company was hired to isolate the pipes and prevent further spilling of the oil using sand. The heat covered an area of 500 square metres,” Brigadier Al Amer added.

Area closed Traffic police is blocking Wali Al Ahd Highway between the roundabout at the entrance of Hamad Town and the one near Buri.

Interior Ministry mentioned in its statement that “the local road network remains closed while the investigation continues, and the General Directorate of Traffic calls on motorists to take alternative routes until further notice.

“My name is Camila Canicoba and I represent the department of Lima. My measurements are: 2202

cases of femicide reported in the last nine years in my country.” During the Miss Universe Peru beauty pageant, the 23 contestants walked across the stage in glittering gold dresses and spoke directly into the microphone. Rather than share their measurements, as is typical of that segment of the pageant, the women shared stats regarding violence against women in their country. While the change in the program was seen as shocking, the use of pageants to highlight serious issues affecting women deserves further attention.

Beauty pageants are hardly known for being political, or even politically correct: many feminists denounce them for perpetuating unrealistic body types for women and the notion that women should just aspire to be a pretty face. In recent years, pageants have moved beyond looks to also focus on contestants with leadership qualities; winners of the crown may also engage in raising awareness for a social issue, as is the case with the Miss Universe pageant. While the main focus of a beauty pageant is still going to be the contestants’ appearances, why can’t they also be used as a platform to discuss issues pertaining to women?

Beauty pageants are a great platform to address women’s issues. Although some people argued online that the public wouldn’t take the violence against women statistics seriously because they were brought up at a pageant, the fact remains that pageant contestants, although they may look and seem perfect onstage, are also real women who go through the same issues as everyone else. The idea for the Miss Universe Peru contestants came to the pageant organizers after they learned how many of the women had been raped or assaulted. In countries such as Peru, Colombia and the Philippines, pageants have a huge following, while the Miss Universe contest captures the attention of the entire world. This following includes millions of impressionable young girls who would greatly benefit from hearing the women they admire or aspire to emulate discussing issues that may hit close to home.

In the end, the Miss Peru pageant sparked a discussion online about violence against women in the country. Later this month, the contestants plan to lead a march in the country’s capital, proving that beauty pageants can be more than just a celebration of women’s beauty. As society becomes more aware conscious of social issues, there is no reason why pageants cannot evolve and be used as platforms to spread awareness and change for women.

Ex-Bahrain residents in the dock for links to ISIS

DT News [email protected]

Eight former residents of Bahrain have come under

police radar in the Indian state of Kerala for their suspected involvement in ‘Bahrain group’, a collective formed to promote Islamic State.

Investigators are collecting details of their presence, base and activities in the Indian state as a man named UK Hamsa arrested from Valapattanam in the Kannur district of Kerala turned to be an advisor to the group.

The suspects, according to Kerala police, had left for Syria after reportedly holding a special meeting in

Perinthalmanna, as directed by Hamsa alias ‘Biriyani Hamsa’.   A report by Asianet news, quoting police in Wandoor near Malappuram district, said the suspects had their meeting in an ‘Islamic centre’ in Manama.

Meanwhile, The ‘centre’ in Manama, in a statement, rejected the allegations and explained that they are working against terrorist activities. Police, according a news report, later acknowledge the ‘centre’s’ claim and said that the meeting was held by the group at the ‘centre’ without their knowledge.

The police also claimed, according to Asianet news

channel, the group conducted training sessions in the Gulf and created ‘Bahrain Group’ to inculcate the ideology of the ISIS.

“The accused had decided to join the ISIS in Syria and had even come to Kannur to seek advice from Hamsa regarding the same,” the report said citing police sources.

Charges were pressed against Vaniyambalam native Manayil Ashraf Moulavi, Perumbavoor native Safeer, Kondotty native Mansoor, Thamarassery native Shaibu Nihar, Vadakara native Mansoor, Kannur Chalad native Shahanad, Koyilandi native Fajid

and Vaniyambalm native Muhaddis under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Hamsa reportedly told police that he has “sent many Middle East based youth to fight in Syria”. “At least 40 youths were sent to Syria, 5 of whom died in the war.”

Reports say four persons, including Muhaddis, are killed in Syria. Among others, Fajis reportedly could not enter Syria. Police said five-person are in custody in Kannur for alleged links to ISIS. Several intelligence agencies including India’s RAW, IB and other anti-terrorists wings are interrogating the suspects.

Duped by agents, Kenyan nationals stuck in Bahrain

Nine Kenyan nationals, who were allegedly duped by a fake

recruiting agent, are now stranded in the Kingdom.

Though they want to return to the Kenya they cannot do so until they pay around BD250/-each for overstaying their visas.

The men were promised skilled jobs by their agent upon arrival in the Kingdom. The agent also demanded a huge sum of money as a service charge, which they paid.

However, the recruits were in the soup after landing in the Kingdom as they found out that instead of job visas,

they were brought to the Kingdom on eVisas strictly meant for visiting purposes.

“These nine Kenyan men were brought into the Kingdom on e-visas on the idea that they could obtain employment after their arrival; unfortunately, e-visas are strictly for visiting only and cannot be changed to work visas,” Marietta Dias, Chairperson of Migrant Workers Protection Society, Bahrain, told DT News.

The men, Dias said, have now overstayed their visas by three months and suffered enormous hardships. “They now don’t have the financial means to get themselves back to Kenya.”

“Their overstay fines alone are well in excess of BD250/- each, at the rate of BD50/- per month

“A one-way ticket to Kenya is approximately BD150/- per person.

“So far, with the help of benefactors from religious institutions and remittances from their already impoverished families back home, only three men have been able to leave Bahrain with two other men in detention and while the rest four waiting for a way to exit the Kingdom,” Dias said.

Marietta Dias told DT News that anyone wishing “to help them exit the country may contact the Migrant Workers Protection Society, Bahrain.”

The speed limit on Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway was

slashed by 20km/h without notice, less than six months after it was increased by the authorities to 120 km/h.

The change was imposed by the General Directorate of Traffic and the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

Within 24 hours of the change, signs showing the new speed limit were installed on the highway in both directions between the exits to Shaikh Salman Highway (Isa Town) and the flyover near the US Embassy.

Two traffic monitoring cameras were also installed by the

authorities on this stretch. The speed limits were raised

to 120km/h from 100km/h in last June following a public outcry over traffic fines and the intervention of Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

In a recent statement, Legal Affairs Acting Head at the General Directorate of Traffic, Captain Khalid Bugais, said, “Speed limits are set to protect motorists” and that “drivers should stick to the signs to avoid violating rules”.

As per the article 50 of the traffic law, motorists will be fined BD50 for exceeding the set speed limit on highways. But if paid within a week, the fine will be reduced to BD20. The fine, however, will be BD100 for exceeding the limit by 30pc. The fine, if paid within a week, will be reduced to BD50.

Saudi Arabia said it plans to cut oil exports to all the regions it ships to next month as the kingdom and fellow

OPEC nations press on with their effort to clear a global glut.Shipments will fall by 120,000 barrels a day in December

from November, a spokesman for the Energy Ministry said, without specifying what those levels would be. Bloomberg calculations from vessel-tracking data estimated flows in October at 6.989 million a day. It’s unusual for the ministry to comment publicly on exports.

Shipments to the U.S. will decrease month-on-month by 10 percent in December, the Saudi Energy Ministry said. The U.S. imported 816,000 barrels a day from Saudi Arabia in the week to Nov. 3, according to the U.S. government’s Energy Information Administration. Imports averaged 506,000 barrels a day in October, the data show.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and Russia have led a global alliance of oil producers this year in output cuts aimed at ending a three-year glut that has depressed prices and battered their economies. It’s finally showing signs of success, with about half of the surplus in oil inventories cleared and prices at their highest since 2015.

The producers will meet on Nov. 30 in Vienna, where they may decide whether to prolong the cutbacks beyond their scheduled expiry in March. Speculation has grown that they’ll extend the measures to the end of 2018 after Russian President Vladimir Putin signalled last month that he’s open to such a move. (Bloomberg)

Boeing has made it official. The company has booked an order for two 747 jumbo jets that will

become the aircraft for the President of the United States.

Seattle-based Boeing announced Thursday, Nov. 9, that it finalized the order for the jets, which will be modified with top of the line safety features. The 747-8 model sells for about $351 million at list price, but the extensive changes required for a presidential aircraft will substantially increase the price tag.

The U.S. Air Force said in September that it wants the twin 747 jumbo jets available for use starting in 2024. Boeing first won the contract to build the new presidential aircraft, known as Air Force One when the President is on board, in August. Modifications on the recently ordered jets are set to start in 2019.

Boeing stock fell 1% to $260.20 in early afternoon trading Friday. Shares have gained 67% since the start of the year. (The Street)

“fairly vast” number of the Hermes accessory over the years.

“People would be surprised to know that I am a fan of Birkins. My mom’s best friend collects them and when I was young, I sort of

The “Hotline Bling” hitmaker said that he has a fairly vast collection of handbags.

“It was one of those things that I, you know, just started collecting as well for, I guess, the woman that I end up with one day. So, I have a fairly vast collection of Hermes to offer somebody at some point in life,” he added. (IANS)

FUEGO: ANTONIO GADES COMPANYDate : 1 December 2017, 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National TheatreThe Antonio Gades Company, a major pillar of Spanish flamenco dance, will be presenting “Fuego”, which is inspired by the work of the late Spanish legendary composer, Manuel de Falla. The plot, choreography and lighting made by the late Antonio Gades and the Spanish film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the death of Antonio Gades, the foundation that carries his name decided to under-take a very significant challenge setting up another version of the Manuel de Falla’s ballet “Enchanted Love”. Titled “Fuego”, this production was the sec-ond scenic interpretation which the choreographer had of Manuel de Falla’s work. Being an exponent of Gades’ core idea “return to tradition if you want to evolve”, this ballet is a transi-tional piece between the almost mythi-cal setups in the classic plays, Carmen and Fuenteovejuna. It was also the last of the joint mythical flamenco works by Gades and Saura, with the same overlaying structure they followed in Carmen, first as a film and secondly as a ballet.

“HOUE”

Date : Till 31 December 2017, 8:00am - 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National Theatre The Bahrain National Theatre will host the “HOUE” installation by French-Iraqi artist Mehdi Moutashar. The HOUE installation will be exhibited at the Theatre’s foyer, allowing the visi-tors to directly interact with it. “Houé” is an Arabic word formed from two letters: an aerial letter, the aspired ‘h’, developed from a double move-ment – concentric and eccentric, and the waw (O) which follows a helical layout. A back and forth movement similar to breathing is born from the entanglement of these two letters; the first as a breath, the second as an instru-ment. Houe literally means “the other, him,

the one who reflects my image and confirms my humanity”. It is also the root of the word identity, but beyond this first meaning, Houé (Him) is the name used by mystics to signify God. Houé’s calligraphic from, written from right to left using a qalam, a sharpened dried reed filled with ink, starts with a thick, intense, black line and narrows towards the end like a hair. The material shape of the lines forming these three successive angles complies with this logic, as does the general structure: the beginning of the second angle appears halfway along the first, the third starts halfway along the sec-ond… So it is the construction in its entirety which results from the logic underpinning it. In this respect, its development in space clearly refers to the concept of the arabesque, to that essential idea that painting, sculpture and architecture all stem from a single measurement. While the different levels that this work introduces subtly match those of the human body: the lines of the knees, the core and the solar plexus… Mehdi Moutashar was born in Hilla, Iraq in 1943. He moved to Paris in 1967, and since 1974, has lived and worked in Arles. He was a professor at Ecole National Superieure des Arts Decorantifs in Paris, from 1974 to 2008. Moutashar’s work has been exhibited

globally, in such countries as Bahrain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany Iraq, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the UAE, and the US.

Indulge your sensual nature today. This part of your being doesn’t get expressed regularly. Go for a long walk with someone you love. Light some candles in your bedroom or take a leisurely hot bath. Tastes and smells are extra potent for you now. Enjoy a romantic dinner for two.

You may experience some push and pull today. One minute you feel like you should sit back and wait for things to go your way, and the next you feel a stick poking you to get moving. Life is a delicate balance of incorporating these two modes of operation. Neither way is more correct, so recognize and honour both. You may experience some raw emotions today, which you should use as your ally instead of your enemy. Your heart may feel rather abused, so do what you can to gently care for it. Be careful of letting others get too close if they simply don’t know how to act around something so fragile and pure. Protect yourself.

The annoying restlessness that you experience today is simply a reminder that it’s important to start engaging in art projects or musical endeavours that make you happy. Learn from people who aren’t afraid to follow their dreams. Don’t be so concerned with what other people think of your work. Now it’s important to do these things for yourself.

People may be relying on you in many ways today, so be careful that you don’t let anyone down. You may feel like judges are evaluating your performance. Try not to get too carried away with this concept. What’s most important is that you do your best, not necessarily that you achieve perfection.

Try not to get caught in the crossfire of a heated emotional battle today. Your happy, freedom-loving nature is too precious to be tainted by abrasive words and emotions. If things begin to flare up, erect a mental protective wall. These people may be too caught up in their own drama to see how their actions affect the people around them.

You should feel emotionally stable today, but you may feel a bit unsure of yourself when it comes to data. Someone is challenging your way of thinking and demanding that you take a step farther out on the fragile limb. You’re happy on the part of the branch that’s much thicker and more stable. Feel free to stay there if you don’t feel comfortable taking a chance now.Go out and see a movie that you’ve wanted to see for weeks. You’ll be happiest in a reality that isn’t necessarily yours. Fantasy and imaginative scenarios are what tickle your fancy now. Be careful of being weighed down by heavy emotional issues that don’t have anything to do with you.

If you experience resistance or frustration in a certain area, you should take this as a sign that you should follow a new route. Things should flow smoothly and easily. This is one of those days in which reality is going to conflict harshly with fantasy, especially if you don’t have them well separated in your mind. Enjoy your imaginary world, but deal with the practical world, too.

You may be faced with a choice between two different realities. Friends and family are choosing sides while you remain on the fence. You’re able to understand both sides of the issue, making it difficult to put your energy in only one camp. Perhaps you wish to serve as a bridge between the two camps. Things don’t have to be as black and white as others see them.

Be careful about letting your imagination run away with your emotions. Grand scenarios you work up in your head may send your heart crashing when they end unfulfilled or crushed. There’s a realistic tone to the day asking you to be serious and practical, especially when it comes to your feelings.

Your heart’s in the right place today, but somehow you find it hard to execute the things you want to do. Art and music projects are especially difficult for you now. They require a more cerebral approach than you’d like to admit. Perhaps you’re drawn to the spiritual nature of things more than you’re opposed to the rational nature of things.

President Vladimir Putin felt insulted

by allegations of Russian interference in the US election, Donald Trump has said after meeting him briefly at an Asia-Pacific summit in Vietnam.

“You can only ask so many times... he said he absolutely did not meddle in our election,” the US president said. Putin later dismissed the allegations as “political infighting”.

The US justice department has appointed special investigator Robert Mueller to examine any possible co-ordination from Mr Trump’s team, and several

key former aides have already been named.

Trump said on Saturday he had had “two or three” brief conversations with his Russian counterpart at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit in the port city of Da Nang.

“He [Putin] said he didn’t meddle. He said he didn’t meddle. I asked him again,” he told reporters on Air Force One as he headed to Hanoi.

He said he believed Mr Putin was “very insulted by” the allegations, which was “not a good thing for our country”. (BBC)

Sri Lanka’s government faced increasing pressure Friday to answer for alleged human rights violations.

Trump claimed that Putin seemed “very insulted” by the persistent accusations of meddling in US election. Do you consider the accusations as “fantasies” as termed by the Russian leader.

The United States and South Korea on Saturday

started joint naval exercises that will involve three U.S. aircraft carriers in what military officials describe as a clear warning to N Korea.

The four-day drills that began in waters off South Korea’s eastern coast come as President Donald Trump continues a visit to Asia that has been dominated by discussions over the North Korean nuclear threat.

The battle groups of the USS Ronald Reagan, the Theodore Roosevelt and the Nimitz will successively enter the exercise area during the drills that run until Tuesday,

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The three carriers will be likely together in the drills around Monday, according to a South Korean military official.

The exercises will also involve 11 U.S. Aegis ships and seven South Korean naval vessels, including two Aegis ships. The Aegis technology refers to missile tracking and guidance.

They will aim to enhance combined operation and aerial strike capabilities and also display “strong will and firm military readiness to defeat any provocation by North Korea with dominant force in the event of crisis,” Seoul’s military said in a statement. (AP)

Donald Trump says he met the Russian president “two or three” times briefly at the summit in Vietnam

The former president of the world’s premiere soccer

organisation has denied claims that he ‘grabbed’ US star player Hope Solo before a major awards show.

On Friday Hope Solo, the 36-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist, told a Portuguese newspaper that Sepp Blatter, 81, groped her before they were to present one of the prestigious Ballon d’Or Awards in 2013.

But on Saturday, Blatter - who has a history of sexist remarks and has been accused of corruption - said that the claim was ‘absurd’.

The player told Portuguese paper  Tribuna Expresso  that she was at the awards ceremony to present the female player of the year award to USA teammate Abby Wambach.

Blatter, who resigned from Fifa in 2015 amid a bribery scandal, grabbed her ‘right before I went on stage,’ she

alleged.Representatives of the

former Fifa president were quick to deny the claim telling newspapers: ‘This allegation is ridiculous.’

She later elaborated on the claim to  The Guardian, saying: ‘I was in shock and completely thrown off.

‘I had to quickly pull myself together to present my team-mate with the biggest award of her career and celebrate with her in that moment, so I completely shifted my focus to Abby.’

Footage from the night shows Solo seemingly stuttering over her words - possibly through anger or discomfort - and glancing repeatedly at Blatter.

Solo told Expresso that she’d never brought up the issue before because usually ‘I speak out directly [with people] when things like that happen.

‘In other cases, for instance,

I’ve told my teammates: “Don’t ever f*****g touch me! Don’t do it”. It has been in the showers, it’s been in the locker room... I usually speak directly with the person.

‘In the case of Sepp Blatter, I went on the stage, I was nervous for the presentation... It was the Ballon D’Or I was presenting.

‘After that I didn’t see him, and that was kind of bad. I didn’t get to tell him directly “Don’t ever touch me!” That’s the way I’ve always handled things. Directly.’

Solo added that she had seen sexual harassment in sports ‘throughout my entire career.’

‘And I wish more female athletes would speak out about their own experiences,’ she said. ‘It’s rampant, it’s not just in Hollywood, it’s probably all over the place.’

Blatter has been accused of making sexist remarks for decades. (AFP)

former Fifa president were quick to deny the claim telling newspapers: ‘This allegation is ridiculous.’

(AFP)

A Bornean clouded leopard and her two cubs were

captured on camera strolling through a Malaysian forest reserve last week, a rare daytime sighting of the elusive animals in the wild.

Found only on the Southeast

Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra, the big cat species is known to zoologists as Neofelis diardi, with just 700 estimated to live in a habitat shrunk by poaching and deforestation.

“Seeing it in daytime is nearly

Formula One world champion Lewis

Hamilton  has criticised the sport’s organisers in Brazil after members of his Mercedes team were held up at gun point in Sao Paulo last night.

Armed men reportedly surrounded vehicles leaving the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, where qualifying will take place later today.

The criminals stopped vans belonging to Formula 1 teams, as well as a car from the FIA, motor sport’s governing body, at around 8pm.

The gang reportedly held up mechanics from a number of F1 teams, including the van belonging to Mercedes, although it is not know what

was stolen. According to

Hamilton, shots were fired and one victim had a gun held to his head, but no-one was hurt. The Mercedes driver himself was not on the bus at the time.

In a post on Twitter the champion claimed such incidents happened in the sport every year and said more needed to be done to prevent it.

He wrote: ‘Some of my team were held up at gun point last night leaving the circuit here in Brazil. Guns shots fired, gun held at ones head.

‘This is so upsetting to hear. Please say a prayer for my guys who are here as professionals today even if shaken.

‘This happens every single year here. F1 and the teams need to do more. There is no excuse!’

Sao Paulo’s Military Police said today that they had so far not received any report of the incident.

According to Mercedes’ director of communication, the ambush happened at around 8pm last night when a vehicle forced its van to stop as it left the Interlagos circuit.

Most of the staff in the van, who were then held up by the

gang, were mechanics, he

said.He said: ‘A vehicle managed

to make us stop. Some men accosted them and stole their belongings.

‘I can only say that they were items which were very valuable for the team. The important thing is that nothing worst happened and everyone is well.’

He added that the team preferred not to make a formal report of the incident to police.

BBC F1 journalist Andrew Benson also tweeted: ‘Some Mercedes personnel were robbed at gun point leaving the track last night. No-one harmed. Close escapes for FIA and Williams people, too.’

Hold-ups are a known risk for teams in Sao Paulo and around the Interlagos circuit, with drivers travelling to and from their hotels with police escorts and in cars with bulletproof protection.

Britain’s Jenson Button was the victim of an attempted robbery in 2010, the year after he won the title with Brawn GP, but the police driver smashed his way through traffic to escape when the gunmen were seen approaching.

Mechanics and other staff travel to and from the track by minibus and are advised against wearing branded team clothing away from the circuit.

There was a similar incident i n v o l v i n g

Mercedes personnel

last year when a member of the team was robbed at gunpoint by two men ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.

The incident took place as they were travelling in a chauffeur-driven car from Mexico City Airport to the team hotel in the city.

Watches and wallets were taken after the gunmen targeted the car while stationary in traffic.

The mother-in-law of former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone was kidnapped in Brazil last year.

Aparecida Schunck, then 67, the mother of Mr Ecclestone’s wife Fabiana Flosi, was abducted from her Sao Paulo home on July 22.

A ransom of £28million was demanded but none was paid and she was later released unharmed.  (Daily Mail)

Giroud on target as France beat WalesParis

France underlined their status as World Cup contenders next summer

with an impressive 2-0 friendly win over Wales in Paris.

Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud scored as Wales endured a tough night in their first game since their own World Cup hopes were ended by the Republic of Ireland last month.

Chris Coleman was a helpless spectator in what could prove to be one of his final games in charge of Wales.

Talks are set to resume between Coleman and the Football Association of Wales after Tuesday’s friendly with Panama in Cardiff.

Although his side were well beaten at the Stade de France with the hosts striking the woodwork three times, there was real encouragement for the future

with the promising debuts of Ethan Ampadu and David Brooks and another impressive cameo from Ben Woodburn.

But France were too good and the front line of Griezmann, Giroud and the outstanding Kylian Mbappe caused all sorts of problems.

Griezmann’s role in the France side had been questioned by some after an indifferent season at Atletico Madrid which has seen him fail to score in his last seven appearances.

But Griezmann struck in Les Bleus’ final World Cup qualifier against Belarus last month and he did so again after 18 minutes.

France were Wales’ first overseas opponents in 1933 when the two teams fought out a 1-1 draw at the Stade de Colombes in Paris.

But this was only their fifth meeting,

and the first since 1982 when Wales’ record goalscorer Ian Rush settled a Toulouse friendly.

France appeared intent on making up for lost time as Wales struggled to get out of their own half in the early exchanges.

Blaise Matuidi fired wide before his midfield ally Corentin Tolisso wasted an even more inviting opportunity after Griezmann squared a delightful ball into his path.

Mbappe then saw his 10th-minute shot diverted onto the crossbar by Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey as France again found their way through too easily.

A France goal looked inevitable and it duly arrived after 18 minutes when Tolisso spotted the run of Griezmann and Hennessey was unable to stop his left-foot volley. (espn.in)

England made light of their injury worries as World

Cup preparations got off to a promising start, with Gareth Southgate’s young side fighting out a spirited goalless draw with Germany. The first friendly in the build-up to Russia 2018 could have been thrown off kilter by the withdrawal of seven players, yet a youthful Three Lions line-up took their chances to impress against the reigning world champions.

England’s inexperienced side produced entertainment that was all too rare during qualification, with Southgate’s men showing endeavour, creativity and steel.

Questions over Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater’s commitment dominated the build-up to a match that saw two players on loan from the Premier League champions make promising debuts. Tammy Abraham proved a handful during his first 60 minutes of international football and man of the match Ruben Loftus-Cheek flourished under the Wembley floodlights, as did fellow debutant Jordan Pickford.

The Everton goalkeeper may

have only been able to watch on helplessly as Leroy Sane hit the bar, but he proved the scourge of Timo Werner in a first half that saw Phil Jones limp off through injury. The Manchester United defender could well become the eighth withdrawal from England’s initial squad, but the other absentees gave Southgate an encouraging insight into the strength in depth at his disposal.

Joe Gomez and Jack Cork also made their bows as Eric Dier captained his country for the first time on an experimental evening that sets things up nicely for Brazil’s visit on Tuesday.

Abraham almost reached a Jamie Vardy cross after Pickford denied Werner in an end-to-end opening 90 seconds, with Germany unsurprisingly settling quickest and looking to expose any gap in the hosts’ three-man defence.

In-form Sane was proving their biggest threat. A thrashed strike in the early stages was followed by a stunning 20th-minute attempt that led to a collective gasp inside Wembley as his curling shot from the edge of the box hit the woodwork. (espn.in)

Coco Vandeweghe survived a late attack

of nerves in an otherwise composed performance to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4 6-4 and give the United States a 1-0 lead in the Fed Cup final against Belarus yesterday.

U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens faces 78th-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the day’s second singles at the Chizhovka Arena, where a win for the American would put her team on the brink of a record-extending

18th Fed Cup title - their first in 17 years.

Vandeweghe, who broke into the world’s top 10 this week, started the stronger in her first meeting with the 87th-ranked Sasnovich, breaking in the first game of the opening set and holding her serve with ease.

The American broke again in the first game of the second set, and although Sasnovich levelled things up immediately, Vandeweghe stepped up a gear in the next game, breaking once more before holding to love to take

control of the match.Vandeweghe’s composure

deserted her temporarily on serve with the score at 4-3 when she surrendered a surprise break after leading 40-0, but she broke back immediately to restore her advantage before serving out for victory in an hour.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal said they

welcome innovation in tennis but warned the game’s administrators on Friday not to tamper too much with the current format.

A series of rule changes and innovations are being trialled at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, featuring the world’s top 21-and-under singles players.

They are aimed at creating a high-tempo, TV-friendly product geared towards attracting new and younger fans.

Rule changes include a shorter format with first-to-four-games sets (tie-break at 3-3), a shorter warm-up, a 25-second shot clock

used between points, no line judges, player coaching and no doubles lines on the court.

Federer, in London for the ATP Finals, starting on Sunday, said he had enjoyed watching the matches on TV but urged caution.

“We need to think, take seriously all these rule changes if ever you’re going to do it because once you do it you don’t want to bounce back and forth with changing something and then you don’t like it later on,” said the Swiss world number two.

“I don’t see that much wrong with our Tour right now that it needs that much fixing, especially the shorter sets. I know it can be somewhat intriguing but at the same time the longer

sets allow you to stretch a lead, it’s more comfortable at times.

“You can try different things. You can work on stuff, whereas if every point counts so much... there’s no room for anything anymore. There are positives and negatives to it but I don’t want to see anything change on the Tour that much to be honest.”

Top-ranked Nadal, bidding to win the ATP Finals for the first time, said it was good to try new things.

“There are a couple of things that I like and a couple of things I don’t like but nothing is perfect. We are in a sport where we have a big tradition -- not many changes have been made in all of its history.” (AFP)

London

Andy Murray has stepped up his recovery from a

long-standing hip injury with an impromptu appearance at the O2 Arena yesterday morning.

The venue will stage this week’s season-ending ATP World Tour Finals where the eight elite men’s players will compete including Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Murray, however, will be a noticeable absentee as he continues to build up his fitness following a lengthy lay-off.

The British No 1 returned

to the match court on Tuesday night when he faced Federer in an exhibition match in Glasgow. And after coming through an entertaining 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 defeat, he opted to make a surprise showing in London yesterday.

Murray, who also become a new father for the second time this week, was seen hitting with Austria’s Dominic Thiem on the blue hard court.

Thiem will start his World Tour Finals round robin campaign against Grigor Dimitrov in the Pete Sampras Group Monday afternoon.

The 19-times grand slam champion Federer will get the singles competition under way tomorrow afternoon when he faces American Jack Sock.

Murray, the defending champion at the Nitto ATP Finals, failed to qualify as a top-eight finisher in this year’s Race to London after struggling with a chronic hip problem since the Wimbledon championships in July. His appearance, however, was another encouraging sign as he looks to make his ATP comeback at the Brisbane International in the first week of January. (telegraph.co.uk)

Brazilian GP: Hami to start from pitsSao Paulo

Lewis Hamilton will start the Brazilian Grand Prix from

the pits so Mercedes can fit fresh parts to his car including a new power unit.

The world champion crashed during Q1 and would have had to start from the rear of the field anyway.

Mercedes has confirmed the change of parts which will require them to break the parc ferme rules and require him to start from the pits. Hamilton will take his fifth new engine, MGU-H and turbocharger.

Hamilton said he took “full responsibility” for the crash,

which he was initially at a loss to explain. He spun into a

barrier at Ferradura during his first flying lap of the session. As he did not set a time he will require permission from the stewards to take part in the race but as he demonstrated competitive pace in practice this is likely to be a formality.

Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas took pole position for the race. Team executive director Toto Wolff paid tribute to him and his mechanics, some of which were the victims of an armed mugging on Friday evening. (f1fanatic.co.uk)

Toro Rosso hits back at Renault over failuresSao Paulo

Scuderia Toro Rosso has hit back at Renault’s

suggestion that its recent reliability problems have been due to how the team operating its power units.

The Italian team has suffered a string of failures in recent races, with both Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley taking grid penalties for Brazil and then hitting further problems right at the start of practice.

Renault Sport F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul told Autosport on Friday that “we do have a little bit of a concern about the way that our engine is operated in the Toro Rosso car”, before adding that there are “never coincidences in this sport”.

In a statement issued on Saturday morning, Toro Rosso said the problems were nothing to do with the installation or how the team is operating the engine.

“It comes as a big surprise to the team that Cyril Abiteboul has suggested to the media that the problems

Toro Rosso suffers with the power unit are primarily team related, and the way in which the power unit is operated in the STR12 chassis,” read the statement.

“We would like to clarify that all the MGU-H and shaft failures Toro Rosso has recently suffered are not associated with how the team is operating or with how the power unit is integrated in the chassis.

“Nothing has been changed or altered in this installation during the 2017 season, other than cooling improvements mid-season.

“Since the summer break Toro Rosso has suffered continuous power unit related failures, and the resulting grid penalties has cost the team points and relative positions in the constructors’ championship.”

Toro Rosso is ending its Renault engine deal early to take up a Honda supply for 2018, and has loaned Carlos Sainz Jr to the works Renault team as compensation. (eurosport)

Robert Kubica will “almost certainly” test for WilliamsLondon

Robert Kubica is very likely to drive for Williams in the

post-season test at Abu Dhabi, Paddy Lowe has said.

The team’s chief technical officer told Sky Deutschland they intend to evaluate Kubica in one of the days of running at the Yas Marina circuit following the season finale. He has already driven for them in a private test at Silverstone.

“Almost certainly we will give him one of the tyre test days after Abu Dhabi,” said Lowe. “This is a subject that’s getting a lot of attention, I notice, but it’s something we’re working on internally so we won’t tell anyone what we’re doing at this stage.”

Lowe did not confirm whether Sauber driver Pascal Wehrlein would also take part

in the test. The team is seeking a replacement for Felipe Massa alongside Lance Stroll, who will remain with them next year.

Kubica is bidding for a return to Formula One since suffering severe injuries to his right arm and body in a rally crash in 2011. He tested privately for Renault in Valencia and Paul Ricard before joining them for the public F1 test at the Hungaroring earlier this year. But they later signed Carlos Sainz Jnr.

There are few places left on the grid for 2018. The only teams left to confirm their line-ups are Williams, Toro Rosso and Sauber. The Red Bull junior team is expected to keep its new drivers Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley. Sauber is tipped to retain Marcus Ericsson while dropping Wehrlein to

make way for Formula Two champion Charles Leclerc.

The two day test at Yas Marina on November 28th and

29th is open to all the teams and will be used by Pirelli to finale their 2018 tyre specifications. (f1fanatic.co.uk)

Williams to bide their time over Massa replacementSao Paulo

Felipe Massa’s replacement for next season, the Formula One

team’s technical head Paddy Lowe said on Friday.

Massa, 36, announced ahead of his home Grand Prix at Interlagos this weekend that he is leaving Formula One at the end of the year.

Williams have tested Poland’s Robert Kubica and Britain’s Paul di Resta, both older drivers seeking a comeback after years out, but also have 23-year-old German Pascal Wehrlein and Russian Daniil Kvyat on the list.

“We’re very unlikely to make a decision in short order,” Lowe, who joined from champions Mercedes

earlier in the year, told reporters.“We have a number of different

options and we’ll take our time with that and let you know when we have an answer,” he added.

Former champions Williams have 19-year-old Canadian Lance Stroll as their other driver.

The Mercedes-powered team are currently fifth in the constructors’ standings, with fourth now a mathematical impossibility.

“We are motivated to make some significant change to really move forward and create a step from where we are,” said Lowe of plans for 2018.

“We’re quite optimistic about what we’re doing over the winter.” (Reuters)

Bottas takes pole in BrazilSao Paulo

Valterri Bottas produced a scorching lap to snatch

pole at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Mercedes ace Bottas claimed the front of the grid ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikonnen after Lewis Hamilton crashed out in the first stage of qualifying.

Hamilton, who had won his fourth world title last

out in Mexico City, made a schoolboy error at Interlagos and went skidding into the tyre barriers at 160mph.

The 32-year-old escaped unscathed but means he starts at the back for tomorrow’s race in Sao Paulo.

Hamilton apologised to his team after losing control at turn six on cold tyres which destroyed the front left of his car.

He said: “I’m OK. It happened really quick.

“There’s not much to say, you saw it, it is what it is. Challenges make life interesting. I will just try to take whatever bubble of negativity comes and move forward.

“It shows we are all human. I will try and have as much fun as possible tomorrow. (thesun.co.uk)
