Every moment of present is turning into the past very fast

the future is turning into the present continually

Eternal peace, secure life and absolute knowledge are the goals of mankind

Everlasting peace, everlasting life, and unending knowledge are the perennial need in man

But People who have a negative view of them tend to view other people and the world negatively, whereas, there is a healthier self within each one of us just waiting for encouragement.

Most of us are unaware of our strengths, everybody must be made aware of, reminded of our strong qualities. En-hancement of self-awareness of the hidden latent potential within us for being self-assured, poised, achieving and problem solving is needed.

5 WAYS TO GAIN CONFIDENCE

A. Believe in yourself: All you must do is think that you can do it. Be with your instincts. Do not be afraid

B. Self-evaluation is important: An objective insight into your own strengths and weaknesses helps. You can work on your weak points only after accepting these

C. Never say die: Enhance your capabilities and evolve within the constraints of your circumstances. Think positively, there is always a way out

D. Surround yourself with positive and genuine people: You can rectify your mistakes when your friends share that to you.

E. Take criticism in your stride: Do not feel defeated when people criticize you. Evaluate what people say and do something about it, if you feel people are right. If you feel that it is wrong, just ignore it. Be constructive in your outlook.TACKLING POWERLESSNESS

The opposite of having power is powerlessness. Any experience of powerlessness requires a lack of power, of strength, of effectiveness. Do not get trapped by powerlessness. You always have power.

Three Reasons of Feeling Powerless:

A. POOR SELF-IMAGE

• This is the feeling of helplessness. This may take the form of needing to ask for approval before taking any action. • A low self-image can thus have a cripplingly paralyzing on a person, preventing them from even beginning any ac-tion. • People may say “I am not authorized to decide”, or “I do not have the skill or knowledge to do anything”. • It may also come from a self-image of being unable to achieve goals.

B. FEAR OF FAILURE

• Another cause of powerlessness is the fear of failure. This is often based in the fear of persecution and rejection. • This may be related to the paranoid-schizoid position. • The person typically projects forward into the future, and sees themselves failing and then continues to imagine oth-ers criticizing and ostracizing them.• There is no attempt at initiating effort

C. INTERNAL CONFLICT

• Internal conflict can lead to powerlessness, where you want to discipline somebody, but you also want to be liked -- the result can be a stasis of inaction- motionlessness.• When equal and opposite forces pull against one another, the net movement is zero. • Internal conflict thus can create significant internal tension but no real movement.

HYDRA AND HERCULES: A LOVE STORY

BY KAIKASI V..S.The serpents on my head writhe in pain

The mighty Hydra is going to die! Before that let me declare my love

For my heart is over pouring my requited passion for you, my hero, O Hercules!Using that sword and burning flame you had smothered me

The lips burning for a kiss from you scorched under your torchYou can kill me but you can’t destroy my heart, still yearning for you

My serpentine beauty lies slashed to fragmentsAll these gore for your second labour to be completed

What sort of a warrior are you? Why did you agree to fight with a woman? You could have said no my dear Hercules

I would have killed myself for you, only for youI wouldn’t have recreated a multitude of heads

I wouldn’t have let the poisonous breath touch your valorous selfI wouldn’t have let any creatures from the dark interiors come anywhere near you

Dear fighter! I was brought up by Hera, who wanted revenge

I heard about your tales of bravery and courage and even without my consent -- -My love for you flamed up, like a whirlwind it engulfed me

I collected the skulls of my victims and prepared a garland for youI was not like Medusa whose looks will petrify you to become a stone forever

Like Andromeda chained naked to a rock, to be saved from death by PerseusMy mind too craved for your liberating presence

Beside the lake Lerna we could have bathed ourselves in immortal loveOur love could have transcended the pages of Greek Mythology

We could have challenged the pantheon of Gods and Goddesses who are –Nothing but harbingers of blood, feud and death

Making us pawns to their greed and jealousyCome back to me; take me with you O Hercules

We’ll make love in the nether worldsHades will open wide for us, conceal us from the immortals above --

When you came I thought you were ready for my loveI prepared this pool of mystic fragrances for you to bathe

Yet you preferred to bathe in my blood and your-Chiselled body sparkles in those vermilion droplets

Did Athena give you the idea to cauterize my neck stumps? To prevent the growth of new heads?Or was it Lolanus your cruel nephew?

When you placed my severed head on a lotus leaf-Still alive and squirming in pain

I still wanted to declare my love for you; But you-- --You left the place lured by the pleasure of finishing off the third task

THELAST LETTER BY RASHMI AGRAWAL

The letter fluttered in his hand due to the wind. He was shaking too. His tears rolled down when the language translator read it out. Dear Papa, I had a vision of a halo on Tuffy’s hazy head. He is the most playful and dearest friend I havehad in the lastseven years. He has been my guiding star on the dark roads. And I love him dearly. But I cannot see him die. Or any of my dear ones. So, I am leaving, to never come back. Love, Tanya The police and translator had puzzled looks. He blurted in a hoarse voice. “Tanya was vision impaired from birth. But she was very artistic, she used to tell beautiful stories and poems. Her eyes never interfered in her learning. She learned braille.” He tried to control his shaky voice among the nonstop hiccups. “She first saw a halo over her bench mate and was amazed to get some vision. But that friend died due to illness after an year. Years later she saw it on her Granny and a slight vision of her face. My mom died in seven months.” “This time Tuffy, our dog. Now I realized, she could not bear the pain of getting glimpses and so, left forever.” “I wish, I listened to her insistence and learnt braille. I could have read this letter months back from her stack of poems and stories when she vanished. It is Tuffy who brought this to me.” Tuffy barked meekly and breathed his last breath.

A DESERTED LAND BY SUDIPTA DASH

You start from the tree having thousand branchesWhere caged birds hanging for their chancesYou start from there, you just start to walkThere’s no one around for you to talkIf you reach there by the morning hoursWhen Destiny rings the bellsYou will see there, white fake flowersAnd appreciate their sweet smells.

If you walk all day, you will reach the townThere are people like you fighting for the crown,

You will see the church and sing the songPraying God to make you strong

The river is black, and the clouds are greyIt can be worse than catastropheEverybody wants to buy the prey,

They all have their own philosophy

Everybody says that the war is overIt’s time for peace, so don’t get soberBut you will see the guns being refilledAnd if you ask, you will be killed. You will live in fear, you will live in frightThe darkness will engulf your headBullets and bombs will peace the nightThe fire will make you out of bed

Then you will run the fastest you canRun to the place where it all began,

You will see that it’s all a gameThe war is over, but it’s still the same. There is no God, empty is the church

It’s been a long since they stopped His searchThe town is there but the crown is fake

But people are blind, they will not forsakeYou will understand that the bells liedFake flowers are red, and they just diedYou will find that tree in a deserted land,There is no green, but only the sand,The caged birds there you will seeWaiting for you to set one free. You’ll wish for your death, but you cannot dieWill you set one free, and let it cry?

I see her trying everyday. I see her failing. And then crying. I see her flinging her pillow onto her bed in an attempt to take out all of her frustration, when she is unable to sleep because of over-thinking. Overthinking about all the worst possible scenarios that could’ve happened when she embarrassed herself. Thinking about how many people laughed at her when she stuttered while delivering a speech. Or if the girls who passed her in the corridor were

snickering while talking about her. Too much thinking takes a toll on her. I know it does.

I see her coming to me, asking for an escape. Escape from the brutal reality that is life, reminding her every second about how socially inept she is. And escape is what I provide. I feel her anxious fingers gingerly touching my leaves. Turning them over and over. With time, I feel her getting more and more immersed into the vast ocean of words and imagination.

With the fear of being judged scaring her to death, I let her be whatever she wants to be. But there’s only so much I can do. I’m just tatted wood after all. I’m just a book.

HODOPHOBIA By Saurwita Brahma

Travelling not only gives you an opportunity to get rid of your humdrum life but you can also explore various plac-es, meet different people, enjoy their food and culture and many other things that travelling can bring to your life. So, when people get a chance for travelling, most of the people feel that they blessed. But there are many people for whom travelling is a nightmare and they are so much afraid of travelling that they limit their horizons or may hardly want to leave their home. These people are known as hodophobic persons as they have the fear of travelling. While some people are afraid of going after a certain distance from their home, but some people are scared from all modes of transportation like bus, train, plane, boat travel, etc. If you are one of those people who are afraid of travelling, then this is the time for introspection.

Are you a hodophobic?

Reasons for hodophobiaHodophobia can arise due to some unpleasant ex-periences in the past which made a negative impact of travelling in your life. There are countless reasons for hodophobia. Below, we are mentioning some of them.• Meet an accident• Getting lost or robbed• Meet some unscrupulous persons• Custom procedure• Unknown place

Symptoms of hodophobia• Trembling and shaking• Anxiety• A Headache• Breathing problem• Sweating• Indigestion• Crying

How effectively you can cope with the hodophobia1. Plan your travel route: If you are travelling by yourself on the road, then plan your travel route according to the map. Sit with the map and sketch a daily travel plan. And if you are travelling by public transport, then reach some time before the departure so that you can travel in a hassle-free way. Book your tickets, hotels at least few weeks of your travelling to avoid last moment rush. Always, keep a backup plan in case of delays.2. Gather all the information: Now, you are blessed with the internet services, so try to utilize it in maximum ways. You can search on the internet so that you can get a detailed information about your hotel, and don’t forget to check the deck plans for your cruise or your sitting arrangement for your plane or train trip. Try to familiarize yourself with the security procedure and other things so that you can know what facilities and amenities are added to your trip.3. Take care of your food and beverages: In a new place and culture, you might want to try with the new scrumptious dishes but don’t be so experimental. You should try to consume those foods and drinks which are familiar to you. Try to avoid alcohol, drugs or other sleeping pills during your voyage because these will stimulate you to sleep during the crucial time of your journey.4. Visualize: Before your departure, try to visualize your entire trip. Imagine that you are strolling through the airport, and board the plane without any difficulty. Or envisage that you are comfortably sitting in the lobby of your hotel and talking to the fellow visitors. Because visualize will strengthen your self-confidence and also reduces your stress, anxiety and agony. 5. Take a companion with you: If you are not confident enough to travel alone or maybe you will become scarier while travelling alone, then make a travel plan with your friends, family, acquaintances or groups. SHYNESS (AN UNHEARD POWER) BY MEHAK GUPTA GROVER

Being shy is not a shameful thing- is not an insult. Infact introverts and socially timid may make better bosses, learn faster and even be more emotionally mature than their louder mouthed counterparts. Most shy people are modest, they are the last ones to announce their accomplishments or let the world know how great they are. Shyness doesn’t mean that people are anti-social, they are selectively social and enjoy small groups. When I was young, I was tongue tied and very shy. It was terribly painful for not being part of the group; but it gave me the ability to be more obser-vant, a listener and a watcher. While growing up, I used to hear- “ You are so shy! Why are you so bashful?” Youth conferences used to make me uncomfortable be-cause there used to be so many new people. I used to know the answers in the class but never had the courage to raise my hand. There was a phobia- what if I say the wrong answer, my friends would laugh at me. Shyness was like an immovable barrier . But with time I realised that after having so much knowledge, if I stay in my cocoon, it’s hard to become a butterfly. Overcoming shyness is all about practice by putting oneself in situations like debates and related activities. So just do it. Push yourself to get out there and talk to somebody. By pushing part shyness, your foot will be taking a giant step towards success. Though Shyness makes people spend more time reading, learning, focusing, listening, observing and imagining. It becomes miracle when traditional ideas are challenged. With Shyness comes attentiveness, independence, thoughtfulness, insightfulness and approachability. One most important benefit of being shy is the development of lis-tening skills. Sure shy people may not be the self involved chatterbox of the party, but they are vastly more beneficial. Their shy silence allows them to open their ears- to be keen listeners- a life skill that comes naturally to them. If you are shy or socially anx-ious, you probably tend to wait before you take action. This trait can be helpful when it comes to many life decisions. Thinking carefully and planning before taking actions are important for many of life’s hurdles including planning for the unexpected.Interestingly, in Indonesia, word shy is also a word for shame. Shame is an intense and irreparable feeling of core inadequacy and unworthiness. Impact of shame is secre-cy and an inability to access reality. I mean, really??In words of Marco Battaglia- ‘ Shyness is simply a human difference, a variation that can be a form of richness’.While extroverts tend to gain their energy in social situations, introverts typically re-charge their energy through solitude. It might be easy to assume that those who gravitate towards the spotlight of fame are extroverts, but the truth is that many of our most prominent faces have actually been spotted as introverts. From Abraham Lincoln, Emma Watson, J.K. Rowling to Mahatma Gandhi and T.S. Eliot, Shyness has built many great people.

1 2 T H E S P O T L I G H T M A R C H 2 0 1 8

A R T I C L E

Albert Einstein has very well said- “ The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stim-ulates the creativity of mind”. Mahatma Gandhi known for his non violent resistence said- “ In a gentle way, you can shake the world”. J.K. Rowling- the famous writer who made our childhood interesting with her story recalls that she first had the idea of Harry Potter when she was travelling alone.Susan Cain- the famous author known for her world famous book -” Quiet- the power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking. She beautifully illustrates how quiet people are actually utilising their worth and are capable of doing it. She has started a quiet resolution. For far too long, those who are naturally quiet, serious or sensitive have been overlooked. The loudest have taken over- even if they have nothing to say. It’s time for everyone to listen. It’s time to harness the power of in-troverts. It’s time for QUIET. One has to unlock the hidden superpower and give oneself the tools to make a mark in one’s own quiet way. Being an extrovert is good; but being an introvert is not bad at all. It doesn’t matter whether one is shy or not. What matters is how one treats life, how they accept the challenges and face the world with happy faces. Shyness doesn’t stop one’s ability to succeed; what stops them is the unwill-ingness to succeed. Success and shyness is corelated. You just need to push your-self towards success. It is unheard success.
