Revitalised Victorian trainer

Robbie Griffiths believes no race

or jurisdiction is off limits if his

stable can unearth horses good

enough to travel the world after recently linking

with Mathew de Kock, the son of champion

globetrotting horseman Mike de Kock.

Cranbourne-based Griffiths in October

officially formed a training partnership with

the young expatriate South African who moved

to Australia earlier this year and the pair

celebrated an important milestone last week

when they prepared two metropolitan winners

at Sandown.

The president of the Australian Trainers

Association, Griffiths suffered a potentially fatal

brain aneurysm in August last year but has

rebounded since his recovery and plans to capitalise

on the stable’s momentum heading into the 2021

yearling sales season. Continued on page 2>>

“There is a lot of interest already

from clients because of the way we have restructured the business and,

naturally, there’s international interest as well because everything that

we are doing has a multitude of layers attached to it,” Griffiths outlined to

ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“What we have structured gives us the opportunity to send horses

to Mike’s stable in Dubai; it has the opportunity to send horses to South

Africa and there’s the opportunity to send horses from South Africa to us.

It has a whole international layer to it.

“There is a really great opportunity on a local and international level

- there’s no boundaries to what we are doing. I think it is going to appeal

to our local supporters in Victoria and Australia and the international

interest that Mike has had in the past.”

De Kock Sr, a regular visitor to the Australian yearling sales in the past,

trains out of South Africa but has also had some notable success while

operating a satellite yard at Newmarket in the UK, as well as a number of

big race wins on his regular visits to Dubai for the World Cup Carnival. He

has trained 124 Group or Grade 1 winners in South Africa, Dubai, Hong

Kong and Singapore, as well as training winners in both the US and UK.

Lindsay Park has in recent years campaigned sprinter Faatinah

(Nicconi) in Dubai, while the Peter Gelagotis-trained Illustrious Lad (I

Am Invincible) has twice contested the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m), a

race won by Rob Heathcote’s Buffering (Mossman) in 2016.

“How lucky are we as an addition to our stable having Mike, a world-

class trainer, in Dubai, South Africa and the UK where we could send a

quality horse at any distance,” he said.

“If we get one good enough, we can say to our clients, ‘we’re going to run

it at the Dubai World Cup meeting’ and we can send it straight up to Mike.

“This is just sensational and I don’t think anyone else in Australia has

had the opportunity to do it like that.”

But Griffiths was yet to commit to sending a horse to next year’s Dubai

carnival.

“Because of my health last year, it

took a lot of the horses out of the stable, and now that we’re rebuilding

the horses might be a little bit young and lack maturity to go down the

travelling path at this stage,” he said.

“We will have a look at the depth and more so the maturity of the

stable and then we’ll sit down with Mike and see where we are at. It is a

great topic to be talking about.”

Griffiths bought 20 yearlings at the sales in 2020, the majority in

partnership with agent Peter Ford, and he and De Kock hope to buy at

least that number next year, starting with the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale in January.

“It will be interesting to see what happens once the ball bounces at the

Magic Millions and it would not surprise Mat or I if we get a little bit more

interest than what

we have had before,”

the Group 1-winning

trainer said.

“We are

approaching the

sales in a positive but

conservative manner

because we don’t

really know how the

market is going to play out coming out of the Covid year. But you can’t

train winners without being able to put a saddle on a horse and we need

some quality stock.

“We want to get the best possible horses into the stable, so we are

going to go there and get ourselves the right type of horses that we need.

How many we are going to get?

“We are probably looking similar to this year, so we might get ourselves

half a dozen nice horses at the Gold Coast in January, but we wouldn’t be

surprised if the market bounces back as quickly as we hope. There’s a little

bit of optimism around how we’ve structured the partnership.”

Mat de Kock’s input to the stable has been more than just the potential

for the “internationalisation” of the business, with Griffiths describing the

partnership as “sensational”.

“Mat has brought a lot of new ideas because of his global experiences

that he has had with his father, which has been well-documented,” he said.

“We all know how successful Mike’s been travelling the world and he’s

one of the most decorated trainers and Mat’s been so fortunate to take

advantage of those experiences.

“We’ve also been fortunate to take advantage of that by joining the

partnership and bringing in all those experiences and those of Monique,

his partner, as well.

“Having all of those benefits is something that all of our owners and

supporters have been able to take advantage of.”

THIS IS JUST SENSATIONAL AND I DON’T THINK ANYONE ELSE IN AUSTRALIA HAS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO IT LIKE THAT.- ROBBIE GRIFFITHS

Robinson seeking good Rosehill KarmaHawkesbury trainer Daniel Robinson will be

out to land his first city winner when he saddles

Karmazone (Eurozone) in the Benchmark

78 Handicap over 2000 metres at Rosehill on

Saturday. Robinson, son of multiple European

Classic-winning rider Philip Robinson and a

former National Hunt conditional jockey, has

issued an upbeat bulletin on his five-year-old,

who has gone to another level this preparation

with two midweek city placings and a last-

start third to Accountability (Dubawi) over

2000 metres at Kembla Grange. "We are very

happy with what the horse has done this time

in," Robinson said of Karmazone, who is also

nominated at Randwick’s Kensington meeting

on Friday and is one of 16 entries for Rosehill at

the weekend. "He's not the youngest horse but

he's lightly raced, extremely genuine and we've

got him up to his right trip now. He'll probably

go for a break after Saturday then we might

target a few races next time in."

Andrews’ three-year-old in Perth Cup mixThe Trevor Andrews-trained Em Tee Aye (I’m

All Talk) is on track for a tilt at next month’s

Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) as nominations for the

$400,000 contest were announced yesterday. A

three-time winner who was last seen running

second in the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m),

beaten a long-neck by Watch Me Dance to

complete a quinella for Mungrup Stud stallion

I’m All Talk (Stratum), Em Tee Aye is one of 40

nominees for January 2 feature. The progressive

three-year-old also holds an entry in the

Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1600m), but he

will bypass Saturday’s Group 1 in favour of the

Perth Cup four weeks later. “They would have

been too sharp for him in the Kingston Town,”

Andrews told The Races WA. “There is no point

going around just for the sake of it. He will run

in a (Benchmark) 72-plus 1800-metre race

and then we can reassess. He is going well and

doesn’t know how to lay down in his races. He

is fit and aerobically very dour. The Perth Cup

looks a nice option for him if he can stay.”

Stream to test Cup credentials in Kingston Town Fellow Perth Cup nominee Arctic Stream (High

Chaparral) will take in the Kingston Town as

he builds towards his grand final on January 2.

The dual Listed winner finished strongly to grab

third in last weekend’s Tattersall's Cup (Listed,

2100m) and trainer Ross Price is pleased with

how the six-year-old has come out of that

contest. “This will give him two weeks into the

Ted Van Heemst and then the Perth Cup,” Price

told The Races WA. “If I went next week it was

a week into the Ted Van Heemst. This way is

an ideal lead into the Perth Cup. He’s a horse

that can back up. Last year he had three straight

weeks into the Perth Cup. I’m pleased with the

horse and think the Tatts Cup has hardened

him up. He was probably a bit gross, but is

where I want him to be now.”

Offers tabled for Ocean BeyondSaturday’s McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m)

winner Ocean Beyond (Ocean Park) could be

the second promising Warrnambool-trained

three-year-old to be sold to Hong Kong in

quick succession. Trainer Daniel Bowman has

buy the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run

Sale graduate since his Listed success at Moonee

Valley on Saturday. The unbeaten gelding, who

won his first start at Geelong on November 7,

could join the Symon Wilde-trained Sandown

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Allibor (All Too

Hard) on a plane to Hong Kong if a deal goes

through. “Like any good three-year-old that

wins a race at the moment, there’s a bit of Hong

Kong interest happening in the last 24 hours,”

Bowman told Racing.com. “We will just take

it on board and put it to the owners. It’s their

horse, so it’s up to them, but it would be nice to

keep him. Some of the money that gets thrown

around these days, it’s quite hard to knock back.

There’s been seven or eight agents that have

been interested. So we will take their best offer

and put it to the ownership group and see what

they say.”

Teofilo filly impresses at Newcastle James Cummings-trained juvenile Vianello,

from the last crop of southern hemisphere foals

by former Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo),

made a big impression when she won a

Newcastle maiden by a length and a half on

debut yesterday. The Godolphin homebred

is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Nonpareil

(Commands) being out of the Listed-winning

Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Serenissima, while

her second, third and fourth dam are also

stakes winners. From a family brimming with

talent given her page also includes Group 1

winners Freemason (Grand Lodge) and Mental

(Lonhro), Vianello has plenty of ability herself

given the manner in which she scooted clear

of a ten-strong field under Christian Reith.

“To travel up here for a few hours on the float

for your first day at the races, she handled it

really well and stood there like an old horse that

had had five starts,” said stable representative

Darren Beadman. “She has a lot of upside

to her.” Teofilo, sire of this year’s Melbourne

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Twilight Payment

alongside top-tier winners such as Kermadec,

Happy Clapper, Palentino and Humidor,

covered 76 mares at a fee of $44,000 during his

final southern hemisphere breeding season in

2017.

Alligator op goes to planAustralian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner

Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) is recovering

having undergone surgery to rectify a kissing

spine on Monday. The four-year-old, who will

join the Tulloch Lodge team of Gai Waterhouse

and Adrian Bott when he returns to training,

was the subject of an upbeat bulletin by owner

Allan Endresz. "We were very, very happy,"

Endresz told Racing.com of the operation. "The

comments from Ben (Ahern), the surgeon,

were that it went really well and post-op he

was fantastic. He came out and started eating.

He is going to be under some close care and

treatment for the next few days. I'm glad in

hindsight we pushed hard (for the scans) to

identify the problem. It turns out...on a scale

of one to ten of problems, Al came in at a ten.

There're six vertebrae there and three were

almost fusing together. How he was running

through the thing, no one knows." Looking

ahead, Endresz added: "With the right length

and time (out) and all the R and R we will give

him, I think we are going to see a much happier

horse.”

Tribunal reserves decision on Gelagotis TCO2 caseThe Victorian Racing Tribunal has reserved

its decision in the hearing against trainer

Peter Gelagotis. The two-day hearing ended

yesterday following final submissions from

Racing Victoria barrister Amy Wood and

Gelagotis' barrister Damian Sheales in the

case involving the elevated TCO2 (total carbon

dioxide) levels found in the the Gelagotis-

trained Strong Influence (Squamosa) in a pre-

race blood test before the gelding finished third

at Sandown on June 26, 2019. Strong Influence

returned a reading of 37.8 millimoles per litre in

plasma on a threshold of 36 millimoles. Wood

said it was not a prerequisite to prove by what

means administration had occurred, only that

it had occurred or must have occurred, while

Sheales argued RV wanted the VRT to find

Gelagotis guilty despite not knowing what

alkalising agent was used or by what method

it was supposedly delivered. In reserving his

decision, Judge John Bowman indicated the

tribunal would like to have the matter finalised

by Christmas.

Owners allowed at stablesVictoria-based owners will be allowed to

visit their horses at trainers’ stables from

Friday, Racing Victoria chair Brian Kruger has

revealed. As owners and the public begin to be

allowed back on racecourses, RV is set to relax

the protocols which have been in place since

the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early

March. "We will be changing our protocols so

that owners will be able to visit stables and

see their horses from this Friday," Kruger told

RSN927 yesterday. "Our team will be putting

out a lot of details around exactly how that will

work in the next few days."

Crowds allowed back at SA meetsThoroughbred Racing SA (TRSA) has given

the go-ahead for crowds to return to the races

as of this week, with clubs to comply with the

conditions and maximum crowd numbers

listed in their respective Covid-Safe Plans.

Meetings are scheduled for Gawler today,

Penola on Friday, Morphettville on Saturday

and Murray Bridge on Sunday. Punters are

being advised to check with the respective

clubs prior to each fixture regarding crowd

arrangements.

All-Star Mile nominations openThe All-Star Mile (1600m) will be held at

Moonee Valley for the first time in 2021 with

nominations for the $5 million race opening

today. Connections can enter qualified horses

until January 11 before the general public votes

on who they want to run. The ten most popular

horses will gain spots in the field alongside five

wildcard runners who can win their way into

the race via qualifying events, or through being

chosen by an All-Star Mile wildcard panel.

Flemington hosted the inaugural running in

2019, which was taken out by Mystic Journey

(Needs Further), and as part of the event's track

rotation system, it moved to Caulfield this year

where it was captured by West Australian raider

Regal Power (Pierro). Connections pay a $500

nomination fee, donated to the Good Friday

Appeal which supports Melbourne's Royal

Children's Hospital. Horses entered for the race

need to meet several criteria, including having

placed in a stakes race.

Cartwright to finish apprenticeshipPromising apprentice Georgie Cartwright,

who guided the Tony Gollan-trained Niedorp

(Not A Single Doubt) to success in the Spirit

Of Boom Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben

on Saturday, is hoping to establish a strong

foothold in Queensland as she plans for life

after her apprenticeship, which ends this

week. "It's been going really well. I couldn't

have asked for a better three months here,"

Cartwright, who was formerly based in Victoria,

told Racing.com. “I come out of my time on

Thursday, I'll become a senior. So while I've got

a bit of momentum here, I thought I may as well

see how I go as a senior up here. Obviously it

becomes a lot harder once you become a senior

because you don't have your claim. But I feel

that now that I've been here for a few months

that I've developed a few connections with a

fair few trainers up here."

NSWROA to support Team TyeThe Team Tye Foundation, a charity recently

established by champion jockey Tye Angland,

who was rendered quadriplegic following a

fall in 2018, will be supported by the NSW

Racehorse Owners’ Association at their annual

Christmas lunch, scheduled for next Saturday,

December 12, in the Champagne Bar at

Randwick. The Team Tye Foundation, which

helps other racing industry participants who

have been left with a disability through their

involvement, was the beneficiary of Godolphin

runner Colette (Hallowed Crown) winning

the Golden Eagle (1500m) in October. The

Tab expands crash investigationTabcorp has appointed an independent firm

to guide its investigation into what caused

its entire system to crash on November 7.

Racing.com yesterday reported Deloitte to

be assisting Tabcorp with the inquiry into

why its wagering network crashed just after

11am (ADST), bringing the pari-mutuel pools

and the organisation’s fixed odds betting to a

standstill nationwide and having wide-ranging

ramifications for the thoroughbred industry.

The problem was not fully rectified until late the

next day, with the gaming giant attributing the

outage to 'smoke and a likely fire incident at a

data centre managed by a third party'.

Captain Cook for Aimee’s JewelTrudy Keegan is still on cloud nine after taking

out the Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’

Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Riccarton with Aimee’s

Jewel (Proisir) last month. It was the first time

the Stratford trainer had campaigned in the

South Island and she said she could not have

hoped for a better experience. The mare

will line up in the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr

1, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday before

a probable Australian campaign. “We are

super happy with her,” Keegan said. “She has

come through the Riccarton trip well, she

has thrived on it. She is a very special horse

who is still on the improve. She is still six

months away from probably being at her best

physically and she is still learning.” Keegan

added: “I would love to have the opportunity

to continue campaigning her in Australia,

but it is just a little bit tricky. We are hoping

that things open up and that can happen in

the new year. When she goes to Australia, we

would love to keep (jockey) Lisa Allpress on

her as well. We would like to keep the same

team ideally.”

Trio for Ritchie and Ralph at RotoruaSteven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, who have

saddled five winners from 26 runners so far

this season, will launch a three-pronged

assault on today’s meeting at Rotorua,

saddling a trio of homebreds from Sir Peter

Vela’s Pencarrow Stud. Oremus (Darci

Barhma) and Valzacella (Rip Van Winkle)

are set to clash in the Have Your Function @

Arawa Park Maiden (1560m), while Topkapi

(Tavistock) will line-up in the Holiday Inn

Rotorua 1560. “He’s a big, strong horse who

was always going to get over ground, but he’s

still learning and quite raw,” Ritchie said

of Oremus, a brother to Avondale Guineas

(Gr 2, 2100m) winner Valbuena who

holds a New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)

nomination. Of debutant Topkapi, who has

drawn outside in barrier 14, Ritchie added:

“The draw’s not too much of a worry for her

because she’s likely to get back a bit. She’s

been up a while, and we just really want to

get her going. She’s very full of herself, but

she’ll be a nice staying filly.”

Asano to join Matamata stableKozzi Asano, the South Island’s leading

jockey, will leave the mainland next week

in order to spend a short-term stint with

Wexford Stables in Matamata where he will

get the chance to enhance his knowledge

with co-trainer and former champion

jockey Lance O’Sullivan, who trains in

partnership with Andrew Scott. Asano, who

is indentured to Riccarton trainer Andrew

Carston, was a surprise package last term,

coming out of the blue to lead the national

jockeys’ premiership for much of the

season before being gunned down late by

Lisa Allpress. He currently sits tenth in this

season’s premiership. “My boss (Carston)

asked me if I wanted to go and work for

Lance O’Sullivan. He is a legendary jockey,

so I thought it would be a good opportunity

to learn off him, so I have taken up the

opportunity,” Asano said. “I will try and

continue to ride down south and do my best

for all the trainers and owners who have

supported me.”

‘Acceptable’ trial from Classique LegendClassique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) took a

crucial step towards his Hong Kong Sprint (Gr

1, 1200m) tilt with his first Hong Kong barrier

trial on the turf at Sha Tin yesterday. But while

satisfied with the grey’s effort, his new trainer

Caspar Fownes implied caution as he swiftly

prepares The Everest (1200m) winner for his

Hong Kong debut on December 13. “Obviously

he’s a bit rusty and he hasn’t had an ideal prep

as I have been saying – I’m just doing the best I

possibly can considering the time frame I have,”

Fownes said of the five-year-old, who arrived

in Hong Kong only 23 days earlier. Classique

Legend settled at the rear of the field early on

over 1000 metres under Vincent Ho before

being pushed out to cross the line in third

behind Sky Field (Deep Field) and Assimilate

(Sebring) in a time of 58.67 seconds. “The trial

was acceptable – it’s the first time he has been

down the straight and he just picked up nice,

did his job – he came back nice and we’ll scope

him and make sure everything is A1 over there,”

Fownes said.

HK: Fownes poised to take the wraps off another talented former AustralianThree days after successfully unveiling Hong

Kong debut winner Enrich Delight (Medaglia

d’Oro), who raced under the Godolphin banner

as Chenier in Australia, Fownes will attempt a

similarly triumphant feat with another former

Australian Propice (Ilovethiscity), who runs

first-up in the Class 3 Fleming Handicap

(1000m) at Happy Valley tonight. Trained

in Australia by Greg Eurell, Propice raced as

Ilovemyself in a two-start career pre-import,

winning the Festival Handicap (Listed, 1000m)

at Flemington before finishing sixth of eight

on slow going in the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr

3, 1200m) at Rosehill in March. Propice has

trialed twice in his new surroundings, closing

strongly to finish second to The Abraxas (Bon

Hoffa) over 800 metres at Sha Tin on October

27 before an eye-catching second behind

subsequent debut winner Harmony N Blessed

(Magnus) over 1000 metres at Happy Valley on

Page 10: STEVE MORAN: RACING'S LEFT-FIELD STORY OF THE

November 13. “I was happy with his trial,

he was back and covered ground, stayed

on nice,” Fownes said. “Again, it’s so tough

with these horses. They come in on a rating

of 77 after two (Australian) starts, they’re

coming into the toughest jurisdiction in the

world to compete at. I think he’s got what it

takes. Hopefully, we’ll get to 100 but, again,

it’s tough.”

JAP: Tapizar to stand at Yushun Stallion StationTapizar (Tapit), sire of Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1,

heroine Monomoy Girl (Gr 1, 9f ), will stand at

Yushun Stallion Station in Japan for 2021. The

12-year-old, a winner of the San Fernando

Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f ) and Breeders' Cup Dirt

Mile (Gr 1, 1m) in 2012, has been standing at

Gainesway in the US since his retirement in

2013 but will arrive in Japan in mid-January.

Tapizar currently stands for a fee of US$10,000

(approx. AUD$13,595).

INTERNATIONAL

IRE: Quarantine exemptions for jockeys extended to all Group or Graded racesIrish quarantine exemptions for riders

competing in Group 1 or Grade 1 races

have been extended to include those

riding in any Group or Graded race,

meaning jockeys can travel without self-

isolating when they return to Ireland. A

change in previous regulations for elite

athletes just before Irish Champions

Weekend in September allowed riders

to travel to and from Ireland without

quarantining for top-level races

only, provided they abided by agreed

protocols. Riders are subject to a risk

assessment each time they intend to

compete abroad and undergo three

Covid-19 tests – once before travelling

and twice on their return.

US: Florida track closesThe near-50 year racing venue of Calder in

south Florida became the latest addition

to the list of former racecourses on

Saturday. The track, which was renamed

Gulfstream Park West after being leased

by Calder’s owner, Churchill Downs Inc,

to Gulfstream Park’s owners the Stronach

Group in 2014, staged its last meeting,

with Diligent (Temple City) going into

the record books as the last horse to win

a race there. Calder racecourse was laid

to rest at the weekend having opened its

gates on May 6, 1971 with 16,263 fans

in attendance. The final fixture, in sad

and stark contrast, was attended only

by racing professionals due to Covid-19

restrictions. Around 450 horses are

currently stabled at Calder and they can

remain until April 1, when it is expected

an expansion project will have been

completed at Palm Meadows to house the

horses and backstretch workers.

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

hero Rekindling (High

Chaparral) was led out of

the Tattersalls ring unsold

for 95,000gns (approx. AUD$181,500) as the

December Mare Sale got underway on Monday.

Trained by Joseph O’Brien to win the 2017

renewal of the Flemington showpiece, the Lloyd

Williams-owned Rekindling has run just twice

since, finishing last in the 2019 Australian Cup (Gr

1, 2000m) and sixth in an amateur riders’ race at

Leopardstown over a mile and a half this July.

The six-year-old failed to meet his reserve,

but that result did not preclude big bids coming

thick and fast during a rock solid opening

session at Park Paddocks, as 37 lots brought a

six-figure sum.

Sitting at the head of the market at the

close of play was Aunty Bridy (Camacho) after

the Group 3-placed juvenile brought a bid of

410,000gns (approx. AUD$783,000) from Sam

Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock.

Having run just three times, winning a

Curragh maiden on debut for Jim Bolger and last

seen finishing runner-up to Elysium (Belardo)

in the Weld Park Stakes (Gr 3, 7f), Haggas said

the daughter of Camacho (Danehill) had been

bought to continue her racing career for an

undisclosed US-based owner.

"There's no plan as of yet," said Haggas,

having seen off the attention of Andreas Putsch

of Haras de Saint Pair and Oceanic Bloodstock's

Michel Zerolo. "She could stay here for the short

term or she could go to America.

"She's a good-looking, lightly-raced filly.

Her form is good and hopefully there's a bit

more racing in her. She by a prolific sire of fillies

too so fingers crossed there's more to come

from her."

Bred by Karis Bloodstock & Rathbarry

Stud, Aunty Bridy is out of Benedicte, a

winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) half-sister to

Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) hero Amadeus

Wolf (Mozart) and Sirenia Stakes (Gr 3, 6f)

scorer Rouleau (Exceed And Excel). She was

consigned by Ballylinch Stud.

Yoshida back in actionKatsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm in Japan

has made some noteworthy December Sale

purchases down the years, including the likes

of Reve D'Iman (Highest Honor), Euro Charline

(Myboycharlie) and Donna Blini (Bertolini).

Despite a series of Covid-19 related travel

restrictions having impacted the normal level

of international attendance at this year's edition

of the sale, Yoshida's name also appeared on

the docket of Calming Effect (War Front), who

fetched 400,000gns (approx. AUD$764,000).

The unraced daughter of War Front (Danzig)

was offered as part of the Juddmonte draft,

which took centre stage with receipts totalling

1,852,500gns (approx. AUD$3,538,000) for 17

lots sold. The four-year-old, who was presented

in foal to Frankel (Galileo), is out of Emollient

(Empire Maker), a winner of four Grade 1

contests in the US who hails from the Niarchos

family of Machiavellian (Mr Prospector), Bago

(Nashwan) and Maxios (Monsun).

"Her conformation is very good and having

a Frankel cover is very attractive for us in Japan,"

said Northern Farm representative Shingo

Hashimoto. "She also matches the stallions we

have in Japan very well, so we’re very excited we

have bought her.

"We haven't decided who she’ll be mated

with next but we have many good sires to

choose from. It’s an honour for us to buy a mare

like this from Juddmonte."

Despite Covid-19 restrictions having

curbed plenty of travel plans, Hashimoto said

his own journey to Newmarket had not been

impacted.

"It's a difficult time for everyone as regards

travel and I need to isolate when I get home, but

travel has been as straightforward as possible

and everyone has been very helpful," he said.

Another for Smith-BernalDuring last week's December Foal Sale

owner and breeder Graham Smith-Bernal sold

his Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) colt out of Nadia

Glory (Oasis Dream) to Sunderland Holdings

for 170,000gns through Newsells Park Stud.

On Monday the proceeds of that sale were

reinvested as Smith-Bernal went to 330,000gns

(approx. AUD$630,000) for Firelight (Oasis

Dream) through agent Jill Lamb. The winning

four-year-old was offered in foal to Almanzor

(Wootton Bassett)by West Blagdon Stud, and

plans now call for her to join Nadia Glory at

Newsells Park.

"She was a good race filly and is a beautiful

looker," said Lamb, who noted the similarities

between Firelight and Nadia Glory's respective

pedigrees. "I bought her for Graham Smith-

Bernal. He's already got an Oasis Dream mare

out of a Galileo mare and we managed to sell

the Sea The Stars colt foal for 170,000gns last

week, so we might look to go down that route

again.

"She's in foal to Almanzor; we like him

a lot and this looks a very suitable covering. I

loved the Almanzor yearlings too. Graham has

three mares at Newsells at the moment and this

will make it four. He's had horses in training

for several years but the broodmares are a

relatively new thing for him."

Smith-Bernal, who has developed two

business empires built around cutting-edge

litigation technology software, has had runners

this year with the likes of John Ryan, William

Haggas and Charlie Fellowes, with his colours

having been carried to success by useful staying

handicapper Hiroshima (Nathaniel).

Donohoe's magic buyBBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe struck

a winning bid of 260,000gns (approx.

AUD$496,500) for It's Magic (Galileo), a three-

year-old half-sister to Mukhadram (Shamardal)

offered in foal to Ten Sovereigns (No Nay Never)

by Baroda Stud.

The daughter of Galileo did not make the

racecourse for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore

partners, but what she lacks in race record

she makes up for in pedigree, as she is also a

half-sister to the Group 3-placed Woodland

Aria (Singspiel), while her dam, Magic Tree

(Timber Country), is a half-sister to Group 1

winners Kirklees (Jade Robbery) and Mastery

(Sulamani).

"She's a Galileo mare and we all know

what Galileo can do," said Donohoe. "She's a

very good physical and should be easy enough

to mate. She's got a good covering too - Ten

Sovereigns is an exciting prospect, and it's a

good, tough family.

"She was bought for a client in the Middle

East who has a few mares in Ireland, so she'll

probably go back to Baroda Stud to board there.

We've been thinking of something like Siyouni

for her next cover - that cross has done very well

this year."

More Mayhem for Knocktoran

Brendan Hayes of Knocktoran Stud

returned to familiar territory when going to

240,000gns (approx. AUD$458,000) for the

Godolphin-consigned Donnybrook, a winning

daughter of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert)

and the Group 3-winning Whipper (Miesque’s

Son) mare Mayhem. In turn, Mayhem is out

of Kilfrush Stud's famed producer Hit The

Sky (Cozzene), who was under Hayes' care as

Kilfrush's managing director from the early

1980s until its sale in 2013.

Mayhem is a sister to Prix Daniel

Wildenstein (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Royal Bench

and a half-sister to Ormonde Stakes (Gr 3,

1m5.5f) scorer Memphis Tennessee (Hurricane

Run), while further back it is the family of the

prolific Cerulean Sky (Darshaan).

"Most people are happy to buy what they

know," said Hayes. "It's my son, Jonathan, who's

bought her really, I was just doing the bidding.

He wanted to buy her so hopefully she'll be

lucky for him. She's a very good-looking filly

and she had a bit of ability.

"It's nice to return the favour with Darley

because they're a huge help to everyone in

the industry, it's really great to be able to give

them a good price for something they're selling.

The plan is to get her in foal early, although

we haven't really chosen a sire just yet - it'll be

something fast though."

Donnybrook was bred by the Mayhem

Syndicate and joined the Godolphin fold at a

cost of €900,000 at the 2018 Arqana August Sale.

More Juddmonte jewelsThe first batch of Juddmonte horses into

the ring brought a couple of the session's early

highlights, including when Tom Blain of Barton

Stud went to 220,000gns (approx. AUD$419,500)

for Desirous, a winning daughter of Kingman

(Invincible Spirit) and the Matron Stakes (Gr 1,

1m) scorer Emulous (Dansili). The four-year-

old was offered in foal to Frankel.

"She's for a client of mine called Faisal

Mishref, who's from Saudi Arabia," said Blain.

"He's been a very loyal client of Barton Stud's.

He had a very good yearling sale and he loves

supporting Juddmonte."

Blain went on to explain that his client has

been breeding on a small scale for a number

of years, but having enjoyed a fruitful round

of yearling sales was looking to upgrade the

quality of his small but select broodmare band.

"He has between two and four mares at any

one time but we're trying to keep the quality

high," he said. "We started off buying cheaper

mares but he's had some good results at the

yearling sales so we're trying to up the quality.

He also had some horses in training last year

and he's a real believer in the game so I'm really

pleased he's got this mare.

"She has a brilliant pedigree and was a good

race filly herself and she's in foal to a champion.

She'll come back to Barton now and we're very

much looking forward to having her. We haven't

thought as far ahead as who she'll be covered by

next year but she'll be well mated. We'll try and

make a proper mare out of her."

Durcan back among old friend

A few lots before Desirous sold, Ted Durcan

went to 160,000gns (approx. AUD$305,000)

for Amser, a Frankel half-sister to Timepiece

(Zamindar), Passage Of Time (Dansili) - who

is also the dam of Time Test (Dubawi) - and

Father Time (Dansili).

The page was enhanced further just hours

before Amser sold as Viadera, who gave Bated

Breath (Dansili) a first top-level winner in the

Matriarch Stakes (Gr 1, 1m), appears beneath

the second dam, as does the redoubtable Twice

Over (Observatory).

The six-year-old was sold in foal to

Kingman, who is due to stand the 2021 covering

season at a fee of £150,000.

"She's for Scott Heider in America," said

Durcan. "She's a mare that I loved yesterday,

Scott loved last night when he saw her and his

racing manager Tony Lacy loved her too. We

thought there's huge upside to her. She's got an

unbelievable pedigree and a sexy cover too. It's so

hard to buy into a family like that and there's loads

happening too so we're over the moon to have her."

Heider, a real estate developer based in

Omaha, has enjoyed a productive season with

his boutique European racing string, most

notably through the Joseph O'Brien-trained

Pista (American Pharoah), who won the Park

Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1m6.5f) before finishing

runner-up in the Prix de Royallieu (Gr 1,

2800m).

He also owns the Gallinule Stakes scorer

Crossfirehurricane (Kitten’s Joy) and the Listed-

placed A New Dawn (Zoffany). The owner later

tweeted that his new acquisition would head to

Norelands Stud in County Kilkenny.

Durcan added that this is not the first time

he has crossed paths with this family, having

enjoyed a number successful link ups during

his time in the saddle. He said: "It's a lovely

family and I know the two-year-old out of

Timepiece [Thaler] is at Sir Michael Stoute's

and we like him. I've actually ridden a few of the

family, including Passage Of Time, and I won the

Craven on Twice Over so I know the family well."

Six-figure brace for Gerrardstown House

Frank Fahy of Gerrardstown House Stud

came to Tattersalls with a view to adding two

mares to his Dunshaughlin-based broodmare

band, and duly landed Golconda (Planteur)

with a bid of 210,000gns (approx. AUD$400,500)

and Mechanism (Zamindar) at 200,000gns

(approx. AUD$372,500).

Golconda, a French-bred daughter of

Planteur (Danehill Dancer), was Listed-placed

during her time with Christophe Ferland and

was last seen finishing fourth in a Gulfstream

claiming stakes for Robert Hess Jr. She was the

only lot in the December Mare Sale catalogue

carrying to US Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat

Daddy).

"I like the mare and I like the cover," said

Fahey. "I suppose after that, it's potluck! It's a

rare cover to have over this side of the world.

The Justify will be for sale in due course and

she'll be going to a more local stallion next year.

"We'll just get her home, get her settled in

and hope she has a nice Justify foal first though.

After that we're in the lap of the gods. We came

over to buy two and we've ended up with two

on the first day, so we can go home now. The

pressure is off."

Mechanism, offered in foal to Golden Horn

(Cape Cross), was another to emerge from the

Juddmonte draft. The winning seven-year-

old daughter of Zamindar (Gone West) is a

half-sister to Amser, who went the way of Ted

Durcan for 160,000gns earlier in the session.

STEVE MORAN

BY STEVE MORAN | @ANZ_NEWS

Imagine if Troy Corstens were to coach

an AFL team to a premiership win in two

years’ time.

That would, perhaps, provide the

best perspective to rookie trainer, Corstens'

protege and dual AFL premiership coach Denis

Pagan’s remarkable achievement in winning

this year’s Gr 1 Victoria Derby with maiden

Johnny Get Angry (Tavistock).

This story has had plenty of coverage but

that should not diminish its significance. It

comfortably sits, in my memory, alongside

those of Joe Janiak and Takeover Target; Vic Rail

and Vo Rogue; Chris Turner and Veandercross

and Lauren Stojakovic winning the Group 1

Blue Diamond on Miracles Of Life.

I would categorise them as racing’s

greatest “left-field” stories - at least in my time

- rather than one hit wonders. Each had other

successes, most notably Rail’s often forgotten

win with Quegent (Northern Regent) in the

then Group 2 Ascot Vale Stakes in 1992.

And who knows what the 73 year-old Pagan

might go on to achieve.

In yet another twist to the tale of the trainer

whose hands-on experience with horses is

less than two years old, he’s not had a runner

since that Derby win but has been shopping

internationally.

Johnny Get Angry, when he won the Derby, was

Pagan’s twelfth starter since his first in July - when

he gained his licence - this year. His one other

winner was also a metropolitan winner, Frankie

Two Angels (Medaglia D’Oro). It’s one hell of a story.

Pagan, with the help of Corstens, Damon

Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock and Irish agent

Barry Lynch paid 85,000 guineas (approx.

AUD$162,250) for a colt by Australia (Galileo)

at the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale at

Newmarket last month.

The colt’s second dam Sitara (Salse)

produced the Melbourne Cup winner

Rekindling (High Chaparral).

It was Corstens who sourced Johnny

Get Angry for NZ$50,000 at New Zealand

Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and who

tutored Pagan in the art of training.

And while his own team, with father Leon,

enjoyed a successful spring with four stakes

wins (albeit with the frustration of a further five

stakes seconds), Corstens junior could hardly

contain his delight at Pagan’s Derby win which

speaks to the very heart of the story.

At the risk of being trite, it’s the sort of story

which racing needs. The sort of story which

underlines hope and glorious uncertainty - the

sort which Corstens had previously been central

to with his purchase of Starspangledbanner

who was later sold to Coolmore which provided

a tattslotto like windfall for his owners.

The sort of story which had another AFL

premiership coach Kevin Sheedy, and his

fellow owners, turn a $1400 investment for 10

per cent of Bel Esprit (Royal Academy) into

several hundred thousands of dollars.

A story which, in Pagan’s case, is arguably

best paralleled by Mick Channon graduating

from his football career - which included

winning the 1976 FA Cup when his unfancied

Southampton side triumphed over red-hot

favourites Manchester United - to training

multiple Group 1 winners. However it took

Channon four years, not four months, to train

a Group 1 winner.

It took Joe Janiak, incidentally, six months

to graduate Takeover Target (Celtic Swing) from

a Queanbeyan maiden win to Group 1 success

in the Salinger Stakes at Flemington in 2004.

Janiak, of course, despite being typecast

as the battling taxi driver, had had plenty of

experience with horses and was known for

landing the odd plunge on smaller tracks in

New South Wales and southern Queensland.

He was no “mug” which was evident from

his handling of this fragile galloper who certainly

couldn’t be pushed on the track. His immaculate

presentation of Takeover Target drew praise from

renowned trainers all around the world.

Janiak may not have been a novice but nor

was he widely known before Takeover Target, and

their exploits rank as Australia’s greatest racing

story since the 1940s and the intrigue which

surrounded the great Bernborough (Emborough)

which is a story for another day, and like Takeover

Target, could easily a movie make.

Takeover Target won 21 races in four countries

(Australian, England, Japan and Singapore)

and in five capital cities of Australia (Sydney,

Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth).

Janiak bought Takeover Target for $1375

(including GST) after persistent leg and joint

injuries, including a fractured knee, had him

marked as “high risk” for his original owners

who included his then “gun” but recently retired

Sydney trainer John Morish.

Morish wasn’t unaware of his ability. 'If you

spell him for a year and get him sound I'd be happy

to have him back,” he told Janiak according to

a Sydney Morning Herald report in May 2004

- after Morish’s retirement from training, that

year, and Takeover Target’s third win.

Morish, 53, was found dead from an

accidental single gunshot wound at Katherine in

the Northern Territory, in September that year.

Vic Rail, like Janiak, was largely unknown

before the wonderful front-runner Vo Rogue (Ivor

Prince) appeared in Melbourne early in 1987.

Rail, who tragically died at just 49 after

contracting the Hendra virus, was unorthodox -

to say the least - in his methods. He wasn’t fond

of shoes on himself or on his horses.

However, he prepared Vo Rogue to win 26

races including 16 of then Group 1 or 2 level

from 1200 to 2040 metres.

Veandercross, trained early and principally by

Wanganui metalwork teacher Chris Turner (with

later assistance from John Wheeler), was another

of racing’s great stories with Turner teaching himself

to train via books.

He bought Veandercross (Crossways) and

his dam in-foal for just $NZ1400. Turner had

never trained a horse before but learned the

basics from reading and with a little help from

fellow Wanganui trainers.

Veandercoss, the horse who should have

won the 1992 Caulfield Cup, won 15 races

including nine at Group 1 level. He won the

Mackinnon Stakes and finished second in

the Melbourne Cup after jockey Shane Dye’s

controversial wide ride saw him beaten a nose

by Mannerism in the Caulfield Cup.

South Australian apprentice Lauren

Stojakovic’s win on the aptly named Miracles

Of Life (Not A Single Doubt) in the 2013 Blue

Diamond Stakes is also worthy of a mention in

the great left field wins.

Stojakovic, little-known outside her home

state before partnering the filly to win the

Listed Blue Diamond Preview, had the pressure

of being aboard the Diamond favourite

but remained undaunted and produced a

copybook ride.

Stojakovic was the only female jockey in

the field of 14, had the least experience and the

poorest winning strike-rate.

VERDICT There should again be little to choose between ChunghwaJingshen and Ready Conqueror here, with the latter

weighted to edge that particular battle this time. Either may prove good enough, butthe suggestion is PRAWN YEAH YEAH after he hinted last time that another winwill not be long in coming.

VERDICT An interesting sprint where the suggestion is PEGASUS GLORYto continue his good recent form and show his class with another

win. Shining On is feared after another success of his own last time, while LittlePlayer and newcomer Phenomenal Combo are others who could go well.

remains well handicapped on some of last season’s form. He gets the vote in whatlooks an open race. Hat-trick-seeker Tashidelek is feared most but NamjongPlus and Stimulation also make appeal.
