The autofocus system As you press the shutter button, your camera sends sound waves-within ' lO thousandths of a second-to the central oart of the scene(approximate area circled in white).

The sound waves are used to measure the distance to the person orobject ( in the central part of the scene) that is closest to the camera.

A bui l t- in computer then uses this measurement to provide the correctlens sett ing, so be sure that:

The sound waves have a clear path to your subject. lf an object(candlestick, centerpiece, etc.) prevents the sound waves fromreaching your sub ject , the lens wi l l focus on that ob ject , and yoursubject w i l l be unsharp.

When photographing more than one person, everyone is at the samedistance from the camera.

The rapid-rechargesystem

Not al l of the energy needed to ful ly charge your camera's f lash is usedevery t ime you take a picture. For example, when your subject is close, less f lash is needed so less energy is used than when your subjectis farther away. Polaroid's new Spectra System thyristor f lash al lows thisenergy to be saved, result ing in faster recharge t imes-usually lessthan a second.

Recharge indicatorsThe red l ight on the control panel wi l l come on and the f lash wil l auto-matical ly begin to charge every t ime you:

. Load f i lm into the camera . Take a picture

. Press the shutter button halfway . Open the camera

When the green l ight comes on, the f lash is ready to f ire. The l ight wi l lstay on tor 20 to 30 seconds.

Unsharp picture Cause

An object in the foreground pre-vented the sound waves frommeasuring the distance to thesubject. The lens focused on theobject, causing the subject to beunsharo and at t imes too dark.

When the subject is not centeredin the picture, the sound wavespass by the subject and measurethe distance to the background.

This causes the subject to beunsharp because the lensfocuses on the background.

Solution

The sound waves travel to thecentral oart of the scene. Be surethere are no objects in Jront ofyour subject See page 12.

Center your subject in the picture

Ot i f you want to keep your sub-ject off center, frame your subjectin the middle of the viewfinder.Press and hold the shutter buttonhalfway to lock in the correct lenssett ing Then reframe your subjectoff center and oress the shutterbutton the rest of the way.
