FOURNATION STAMP EXHIBITION SINGAPORE 2016 Koh Kim Chay

“Friendship through philately” was the buzzword as philatelists from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, including guests from Hong Kong descended on Quality Hotel Marlow, Balestier Road for the annual philatelic show. Once again, it was time to compare notes and to showcase the best in philately through a competition. This year, 5 gold and 3 large gold recipients were honoured at Palmares Night, a glitzy evening affair held at the York Hotel on 24 September. For the third time in this annual series that started in 2011, the Challenge Trophy was won by Thailand. Mr. Charnchai Karnasuta’s exhibits “Siam letter rates: from the beginning in 1883 to 1909 currency conversion”. Singapore contributed 50 frames out of a total of 185 frames, and according to the Jury report, they were very pleased with the high standard of the 51 exhibits at this show. 17 exhibitors participated in the one frame exhibits, including youth and schools, an encouraging sign that more are willing to take that important first step. The show ended with the passing of the flag to Thailand, the next host of the FourNation Stamp Exhibition.

CHRISTCHURCH 2016 Stamp & Postcard Exhibition

Norman Banfield This was a full New Zealand National exhibition held on 18-20 November at the Addington Raceway, Christchurch – the same venue as the 2012 exhibition. A very successful exhibition with over 460 frames for the 120 exhibits. These included 67 frames from Australia. Then there were 8 frames from Finland on Fijian postmarks – a first class example of where you live has no connection with what you collect and exhibit! The Organising Committee was pleased to see 13 entrants exhibiting for the first time and 70 new exhibits from people who have exhibited before. There were 37 frames of postcards. A total of 10 Large Gold and 14 Gold medals were awarded – these included 3 LG and 2 G in the Jury Class (not eligible for special prizes and judged by a special team). Felicitations were given to one exhibit – John Goose for “Ink Jet Cancellations on NZ Mail 1993-1994”. The Grand Award went to Lionel Savins (Australia) for “1935 Definitive Stamps of New Zealand” - an outstanding exhibit with virtually everything relating to this issue. Lionel also received the Campbell Paterson Award for the best exhibit of New Zealand material. The Runner-Up was John Pugsley (also Australia) for “The Boer War 1899-1902 Prisoners of War Mail” - some amazing material from P.o.W. camps in St Helena, Ceylon, India and Bermuda plus rarely seen mail to Prison Ships in Simons Bay, Durban and Capetown. Although the top two awards at this exhibition went to Australians, it is not always one way – in October in Adelaide the Australasian Challenge (with teams from each Australian State and New Zealand) was won by New Zealand. The Jury was under the chairmanship of Jeff Long (FIP judge) and included two other FIP judges and one FIAP judge. There were two Australian judges in the team. The event received a lot of much appreciated support from the major sponsor New Zealand Post who also donated the Grand Award. The NZ Stamp Dealers Association also supported the exhibition - nine dealers from New Zealand and one from Australia. “The show must go on!” – there was a bad earthquake with roads blocked in the South Island on the Monday morning before the exhibition and severe flooding in the Wellington area on the Tuesday. But only one exhibit failed to arrive. Overall, a very friendly exhibition well run by an experienced team and held in a good venue with unlimited parking. Thanks to Capt John Paston for the photographs.
