MSL PaperCut Installation for Ricoh MP C401SR CopiersMacOSX Quickstart Guide

Pre-check List:

Network Connection:

To begin, you’ll need to be connected to the Michael Smith Laboratories networks or the UBCSECURE wireless network. If you are outside of these locations you can connect to the UBC IT Cisco AnyConnect VPN or MSL VPN prior to starting.

Operating System Versions:

Due to limitations with the Ricoh MP C401SR drivers, currently we can only offer printing support for MacOSX 10.7+.

Installation Overview

The basic installation requires you perform the following operations:

1. Download and installation of PaperCut client and Ricoh MP C401SR drivers2. Add Windows Shared Network Printer Print Queue called MSLPRINT3. Add PaperCut Client PCClient to your Login Items4. Print and Enter your UBC Card ID

Download and Install PaperCut Client

1. Click an empty area on your Desktop to ensure you are viewing the Finder Menu at the top of your screen.

2. Click Go on the Finder Menu3. Click Connect to Server …

4. Type “smb://vss-papercut.msl.ubc.ca” without quotes in the Server Address: entry box and click Connect.

5. You will be asked to login, simply replace the username with “guest” without a password. Then check the box that says “Remember this password in my keychain”.

6. Choose PCClient and click OK



7. Open the MacOSX folder, double-click client-local-install script. Click Yes to install the PPClient. This will begin the installation of the PaperCut client to your Applications folder.

8. Once the script completed the installation you will notice two things. First, a green “P” icon will show on the Finder Menu bar close to your clock. Second, a PaperCut client login will ask you to enter your Campus Wide Login (CWL). You can ignore this and simply close this login screen since we’ll be using your UBC Card ID or FOB ID for authentication to the PaperCut server.



Download and install Ricoh MP C401SR Driver

1. Open a new Finder window2. Scroll to show the Shared section on sidebar to connection: vss-papercut.msl.ubc.ca3. Open the drivers folder

4. Open the Ricoh MP C401SR – MacOSX folder5. Double click on the Ricoh MP C401SR – MacOS-PS.dmg



6. Double click on the Ricoh_PS_Printers_Vol3_EXP_LIO_Driver.pkg

7. The printer driver installation window will start, click Continue, click Continue, Agree, Install



8. Authenticate the installation with your Mac’s login username and password

9. Installation Successful, click OK to close the installation window



Add Ricoh MP C401SR Printer

1. Click an empty area on your Desktop to ensure you are viewing the Finder Menu at the top of your screen.

2. Click on the Apple logo and click System Preferences

3. Click on Printers & Scanners

4. Click on the + at the bottom of the Printers list to add a new printer



5. Right Click or two finger tap your trackpad the area between the Windows printer icon and the search bar. You need to add an Advanced button for this printer. Click on the Customize Toolbar…

6. Drag and drop the Advanced gear icon onto the empty space between the Windows printer icon and search bar. Click Done.

7. Click the Advanced icon, set the following options on this new printer:



a. Type: Windows printer via spoolsb. URL: smb://vss-papercut.msl.ubc.ca/MSLPRINTc. Name: MSL Ricoh MP C401SR Copiersd. Use: Select Software …



8. Search for “401” without quotes, this will show the Ricoh MP C401SR PS driver, select it and click OK

9. Verify your settings and click Add10. This should of now added the MSL Ricoh MP C401SR Copiers to your list of printers



Add PaperCut to your Login Items

1. Click the back Arrow icon at the top of the Printers & Scanners menu. This should show you all of your System Preferences again.

2. Click on Users & Groups

3. Click on Login Items4. Select your username and click the + at the bottom of the Login Items list

5. Select the PPClient from your Applications folder6. Click Add



7. You should now see the PPClient in your Login Items list

8. You may now close all open windows related to this setup



Test Printing

1. Open any document or web page2. Choose to print like you would normally do3. Select the MSL Ricoh MP C401SR Copiers printer4. Here you are able to change and/or save your individual default presets5. Print6. After you print you will see a dialog pop-up within a couple seconds of printing depending on

the speed and age of your Mac.

7. This is the login for PaperCut to authenticate and identify who you are. On your UBC Card ID, you will enter the 5 or 6-digit number located on the back of your card after the asterisk *. Some of the older UBC Cards were poorly printed with bad ink that rubs off. If you cannot read your number, come see us and we can provide you the number information.

8. If you enter an incorrect ID number or unregistered number, you will see an error of “Invalid Card ID”. If you are experiencing this error, please contact us and provide us your name, lab affiliation, CWL username, and UBC Card ID at [email protected] or call us at 604-822-8895.

9. Successful print authorization will then show an ATTENTION pop-up: “Your Document has been held in a queue. Before the document will be printed, you will need to log into the web interface provided or a release station and release your document”.

a. Translation: You need to walk to any of the MSL Ricoh MP C401SR copiers located within NCE and MSL to tap your FOB or UBC Card to release your print job.

10. All print jobs are held for 1 day and are cleared after 24 hours. If you forgot to pick up your print job that day, you will have to print your document again.

Until we review the new setup, the same charges apply for all prints to these copiers.
