In the history of women’s swimming and diving varsity competition at NotreDame, 21 different student-athletes have combined for a total of 65 All-America acco-lades. When the program gained varsity status in 1981-82, it actually already had sixAll-America honors to its credit. Competing as part of the men’s swimming and div-ing team, distance freestyler Jeanine Blatt and diver Besty Shadley finished in thetop 16 of the AIAW Division III National Championships, earning All-America statusin both 1979 and ’80. They were joined in the latter season by two of their teammates, backstroker Lee Ann Brislawn and butterflyer Kathleen Latino.

Notre Dame’s first Division I All-American – and only before the arrival of currenthead coach Bailey Weathers in 1995-96 – was Tanya Williams, who first gained men-tion in the 200 individual medley in 1990-91 before garnering honors in both back-stroke events in her final season, 1992-93.

Since Weathers’ arrival on campus, Notre Dame has garnered at least one All-America accolade every year, with 14 swimmers and two divers combining for 56awards. Leading that group is current assistant coach Carrie Nixon (’02), who 12times gained All-America accolades, including twice being tabbed an All-American

(2000 and ’02 in the 50 freestyle). Breaststoker Shannnon Suddarth (’00) was an All-American in the 100-yard race in 1998, and she also was tabbed honorable mentioneight times to bring her total to nine All-America citations, while backstroker KellyHecking (’02) was an eight-time honoree. Tanya Williams, Notre Dame’s first DivisionI All-American, was a nine-time honoree (five-time All-American) under the old All-America system. The most decorated diver in Irish history is Heather Mattingly (’02),who five times gained All-America mention, including being a three-meter All-American in her final year. In 2004, current sophomore Katie Carroll became the firstIrish student-athlete ever to earn All-America honors in multiple individual eventsas a freshman (under the current format), gaining honorable mention in both the 200and 400 IM.

Under the current system, the top eight finishers in each event at the NCAAChampionships are named All-Americans, while the next eight (places nine through16) are recognized as honorable mention All-America. Previously, the top 16 were All-Americans and the next 16 were honorable mention.

Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving boastsan incredible – and near-perfect – record in conferencemeets. In 20 years of competing in league champi-onships, the Irish have captured 19 titles, includingeach of the last eight in the BIG EAST Conference. After being an independent in the program’s first twoyears, Notre Dame joined the North Star Conferencefrom 1983-84 to 1985-86 – long enough to win threechampionships – before moving on to the MidwesternCollegiate Conference from 1987-88 until 1994-95 toclaim eight titles in a row. The first year in the BIGEAST, 1995-96, stands as the lone blemish on NotreDame’s resume. The Irish finished third in the leaguechampionships with 492 points, just 59 behind cham-pion Villanova (551 points), who edged Miami (548.5)for the crown. In 1997, Notre Dame won its first BIGEAST championship with 661 points, which was 113.5ahead of runner-up Miami. Since then, Notre Dame haswon every title, all by larger margins than that. Themost dominating performance came in 2000, when theIrish won 14 events to finish with 827.5 points and sec-ond-place Rutgers had 437.

Notre Dame’s current streak of dominance is tied forthe fourth-longest string of BIG EAST titles in confer-ence history by any school in any sport. The onlylonger streaks were 10 consecutive championships forPittsburgh in men’s swimming and diving from 1983-92and nine in a row for the Panthers’ women’s team from1983-91 and nine straight by Connecticut’s women’s

basketball squad from 1994-2002. Boston College alsowon eight straight in men’s tennis from 1981-88 andPittsburgh’s men’s swimming and diving team alsohas currently won eight in a row.

The Irish dominance of the BIG EAST meet hasextended to race victories, as Notre Dame has takenfirst 70 times over the past nine years, an average ofnearly eight wins per meet. Leading the way in BIGEAST titles is 2002 graduate Kelly Hecking, a 19-timeconference champion who won the 100 backstroke dur-ing all four of her seasons. Current assistant coachCarrie Nixon (’02) was an 18-time BIG EAST champion, while 2000 graduate Elizabeth Barger won 11 titles andher classmate, Shannon Suddarth, was victoriouseight times.

The Irish also have been recognized for excellenceby the conference on various occasions, as BaileyWeathers has been tabbed the BIG EAST Coach of theYear five times (1997-99, 2001-02) and Caiming Xie wasthe 2004 conference diving coach of the year. ThreeIrish student-athletes – Linda Gallo (1998), Nixon (2000),and Katie Carroll (2004) – have been the BIG EASTChampionships Most Outstanding Swimmer, whilecurrent fifth-year senior Meghan Perry-Eaton was themeet’s Most Outstanding Diver in each of the last twoyears (2003 and ’04).

All 12 BIG EAST schools field women’s swimmingand diving teams. For a full explanation of qualifyingprocedures, please see page 8.

Qualified or Participated inSenior Nationals

In addition to their many accomplishments incollegiate action, Notre Dame women’s swim-mers and divers have a history of also compet-ing in various prestigious national andinternational meets, including in each of thelast three Olympics. In 1996, Jilen Siroky (’04),then just 15 years of age, represented the UnitedStates in the Atlanta games, finishing 15th inthe 200-meter breaststroke. Siroky also was the’96 U.S. champion in the 100 breast. In 2000, cur-rent junior Christel Bouvron represented hernative Singapore in the Sydney games, finish-ing 32nd in the 200-meter butterfly and 36th inthe 400 freestyle. Four years later, she becamejust the second current Notre Dame student-ath-

The University of Notre Dame is the nation’sleading example that academic and athleticexcellence can go hand in hand, and the Irish

women’s swimming and diving team does its part inupholding that tradition.

Notre Dame is ranked in the Top 20 of the U.S. News& World Report survey of America’s best national uni-versities and was 19th in the 2003-04 NACDA Directors’Cup standings of the top all-around collegiate athleticprograms in the nation. A 2003 report by the NationalCollegiate Scouting Association listed Notre Damesecond (behind Stanford) in Division I-A rankings fortop academic and athletic schools, based on gradua-tion percentages, U.S. News & World Report academicrankings, and NACDA Directors’ Cup results.

In 2003, Notre Dame was the recipient of the USAToday/NCAA Academic Achievement Award for hav-ing the highest overall student-athlete graduation rateamong Division I schools, 92 percent. The Universityboasts an amazing 99 percent graduation rate for stu-dent-athletes who exhaust their eligibility at NotreDame and the overall student body graduates at a 95percent clip – the second-highest mark in the country, behind only Harvard.

Among all of their academic accomplishments, theIrish rank second all-time in the number of student-athletes honored as Academic All-Americans, with152.

The women’s swimming and diving team has tradi-tionally been a strong link in the Irish chain of aca-demic excellence, as it is regularly honored with theCollegiate Swimming Coaches Association ofAmerica (CSCAA) academic awards for their highteam grade-point averages. Most recently, Notre Damegarnered the distinction for the fall 2003 semester, when it finished 37th in Division I in team GPA (3.247).

The Irish men’s swimming and diving team also hasbeen strong in this area. In the spring semester of 1999,Notre Dame held the distinction of boasting the high-est team grade-point average among all Division Imen’s swimming and diving programs, a 3.352 mark. That was part of a string of seven consecutive semes-ters in which Notre Dame was in the top 10 on that list.

The Irish also have regularly had swimmers recog-nized by the CSCAA for their individual academicachievement. Seven times Irish student-athletes havebeen named CSCAA Academic All-Americans forposting a 3.50+ GPA and qualifying for the NCAAChampionships. Most recently, current seniors KelliBarton and Kristen Peterson gained the honor in 2002.Both also finished among the top 20 in that group inGPA; Barton was ninth (3.902) and Peterson was 16th(3.867). Elizabeth Barger (‘00) and Brittany Kline (‘99) arethe only Irish student-athletes to be multiple-time hon-orees, as they both were Academic All-Americans intheir final two seasons, while Shannon Suddarthgained the accolade in 1999. Additionally, Notre Damehas 12 times had swimmers tabbed honorable mentionAcademic All-America by the CSCAA, a distinctionawarded to all swimmers who post a 3.50+ GPA for theyear and also register at least one NCAA “B” time(without earning a bid to the NCAA Championships).

A unique opportunity to participate in a specialhonors program is available for student-athletes whoexcel both athletically and academically. The NotreDame Academic Honors Program for Student-Athletes,which assists high academic achievers in a variety ofareas so student-athletes can achieve their highestpotential while attending the University, relies heavilyon the recommendations of head coaches. The pro-gram matches student-athletes with mentors in theirdesired field of study and creates a network basewhich the students can use as they approach gradua-tion. Former Irish football player Grant Irons had TomMendoza, for whom the Notre Dame Mendoza Collegeof Business was named, as a mentor. Mendoza, in turn, introduced Irons to investment wizard Warren Buffet, who also has taken Irons under his wing.

Six members of the Irish women’s swimming anddiving program have taken part in the honors pro-gram, including Barton and Peterson.

Irish women’s swimmers and divers also have beentabbed BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Stars on158 occasions since joining the league in 1995-96. Toqualify for that honor, one must earn a monogram andpost a 3.00 GPA for the academic year.

The Irish swimmingand diving teams com-pete in the state-of-the-art Rolfs Aquatic Center. After four years of var-sity intercollegiateswimming competitionin the Rockne MemorialPool, the Notre Damewomen’s swimming anddiving program entereda new era in 1985, asthey moved to the $4.5-million natatoriumlocated in the JoyceCenter.

Donated by brothersThomas and Robert Rolf of WestBend, Wis., the Rolfs AquaticCenter provides Notre Damewith a modern, innovative facil-ity on par with any other in thecountry. Ellerbe Architects andEngineers of Bloomington,Minn., the architects used in theplanning of the Joyce Center, also were commissioned todesign the 45,000-square-footfacility which houses a 50-meter Olympic pool (25 yards in width), specta-tor seating for 400 and support facilities.

The facility features two movable bulkheadsto allow sections of the pool to be blocked off, allowing swimming competition and warm-upswimming to occur simultaneously. The designalso allows recreational swimming, water polo, instructional swimming and other aquatic

to absorb the bow waves of a swimmer, allow-ing faster swimming times.

Another instructional feature is the presenceof two underwater windows which allow cri-tiquing of a diver’s or swimmer’s underwatertechnique. The unique structural system con-sists of three trusses which span 120 feet, withthe roof suspended below the trusses. In addi-tion, the white exterior trusses provide an inter-esting and athletic character to the building. The lighting system is designed to be adjustedfrom maximum brightness for television tonearly dark for dramatic synchronized swim-ming presentations.
