Charted on July 29, 1781 and settled in 1786. Most settlers were from either Connecticut or

Massachusetts. Reasons for settling town:

Suitable for grazing livestock Lots of timber Nearby rivers allowed creation of a sawmill and gristmill

In the 1870’s and 1880’s gold and magnetic sand could be found on the banks of the white river.

Current church was built in 1917 after fire destroyed former church

Original Congregational church built in 1859. Due to lack of attendance Methodist and Congregational

churches met under same roof. When fire destroyed Congregational church, the only one

left was the Methodist church. The Methodist church was at the same site as the current

Federated Church.

Built in 1836 Originally a primary school Housed 35 students at first, increased to 60 Larger building was built in 1883 Sept. 8, 1973 building was named for Roger Clark

He was a former pupil who was killed in Vietnam.

built. Used Colonial style elements in its design
