Wish Someone Welcome Home for the Holiday . . .

When I first started coming back to Mass after being away from the faith for eight or ten years or so, I was one
of those guys who hung out in the back of the church. I wasn’t there every week, I often showed up a few
minutes late, and I almost always left right after Communion. Goodness knows how long this would have last-
ed if it wasn’t for the head usher, who one Sunday asked me to help take up the collection. In short order, I be-
came one of the regular “goto” people for collection; I had my designated aisle (the one on the far right), and
before long I was even involved in securing the green bankdeposit bags. The next thing I knew, I was a full
fledged member of the group. I knew all the other “usual suspects” by name, and I knew the guys who showed
up most of time, the ones who came half the time, and those we saw sometimes. One of the other regular ushers
was even the guy who first invited me to join the Knights of Columbus.

Then before long I began getting territorial. If one of the sometimers was given a basket and dared to take my
aisle, I was not very happy. If they showed up only occasionally, my attitude was readable right across my
face. Then one Sunday, someone came in and did something (I can’t even remember exactly what now) that
demonstrated an inappropriate level of piety. My eyes followed him as he walked through the vestibule into the
main church, right past Salone of the veteran ushers who first welcomed me in. Sal smiled, shrugged his
shoulders amusedly, and said right to my disapproving sneer, “We’re all at different levels.” My self
satisfaction drained out from my cowboy boots. This was the proper reaction to that gentleman, I realized at
that moment. Sal wasn’t trying to take me to school, wasn’t trying to correct my arrogance. He just said it
plainly, simply, and humbly. The truth has a way of standing all on its own without having to be overstated.
How quickly I’d forgotten where I began from, and how far did I still have to go.

Happily, I’m a bit humbler today (sadly, it is only a bit.) But my journey quite possibly would never have even
begun if it hadn’t been for Ed: that head usher who first took the chance to reach out to me and ask me to help
out with the collection that one Sunday. As much as anyone, he is responsible for my being a priest todayto
his credit or to his blame! I became a real part of the parish community as a result of that day.

Christmas is Wednesday. We’re going to see a lot of faces we haven’t seen for a while; we’re going to see a lot
of faces that we’ve never seen before! And some of them might be sitting in “your spot.” Brace yourself. Be
prepared. Please don’t scowl at them. Smile instead. Say “Hello, Merry Christmas!” (And yes: put that excla-
mation point at the endbe truly happy to see them!) If someone comes in when you’re already sitting down
and they want to get into the pew, please scooch in and make room for them; don’t make them climb over you.
In short, be gracious, be hospitable. Welcome them as Mary welcomed Christ into her womb. Help them find
the right pages in the worship aid or the missal. After all, they are part of our community, even if we don’t see
them very frequently. A kind word, a smile, a cheerful greeting will remind them that they are one of us, that
they are members of this parish family. Remember: They will know we are Christians by our love.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Deseje a Alguem as Boas Vindas a Casa Para as Festas do Natal. . .
Eu tinha a fila
bus.

A minha pró-
Rápidamente me esqueci

ajudar a fazer a coleta naquele Domingo.

HOLIDAY BLUES

If you’re dealing with feelings of stress or depression
around the holiday season, know that you aren’t alone.
Many people experience this. But also know that there are
ways to manage your symptoms. There is a difference be-
tween the holiday blues, which typically go away when
the holiday season ends, and more severe depression,
which lasts longer and interferes with activities of daily
living. If the holiday season passes and you're still feel-
ing depressed or anxious, it's best to consult with a
medical/mental health professional.
Causes of the Holiday Blues Include:
Pressure to feel merry
Remembrances of holidays past
Reminders of loved ones lost
Loneliness
What are the Types of Symptoms that you Might Ex-
perience with the Holiday Blues?
The most common symptom of the holiday blues is an
increase in sadness. Other signs include:

mood and increase any negative feelings that you
may have.

your mood
Learn to say “no” Overscheduling and not making
time for yourself can increase your stress.
Be open to new traditions Allow new traditions to
develop. For example, if you’re unable to be with
friends/family, look for volunteer opportunities
that allow you to be around others. Some non
profits will even come pick you up if you’re una-
ble to drive.
Exercise A daily 10 20 minute walk will get your
heart rate up and can also help your mood.

Sunday Throughout The Week
Sharing the Gospel
Mary and Joseph put all their trust in God. Once they
found out what God wanted, they did it. God wanted Mary
to have a special baby, and she said "yes" to God. God
wanted Joseph to be a good husband and father, and Jo-
seph said "yes" to God. When that special baby from God
was finally born, Joseph named him Jesus. One day God
would ask Jesus to save the world from sin on the cross,
and Jesus would say "yes" to God.
Prayer

God, help me to trust you and say "yes" to you.

Mission for the Week

Saying "yes" to God takes practice. When your parents
ask you to vacuum or set the table or take the garbage out,
say "yes" to them.
Something to Draw
