Shin splints is the general name given to pain at the front of the lower leg.

I don’t know why they are called splints. It doesn’t make any sense to me either.

The most common cause of shin splints is inflammation of the sheath surrounding the shinbone. This inflammation is most commonly caused by excessive pulling on the bone by the muscles in the shin. The extra stress on the bone can be caused by

many things such as poorly fitting footwear, a sudden change in training, or lack of proper stretching and general flexibility

around the ankle. If the shin splints are allowed to go on for a long period of time, lumps and bumps or redness may occur on the inside part of the shinbone.

Treatment for shin splints can be as varied as the number of causes. In all cases, however, the first step is to reduce the pain and inflammation, so

that the injury can begin to heal. This is most effectively done with rest and ice. If you are training for a big long run, and it is just not possible to completely rest, try cross training by running in the pool, or using the bike until the symptoms begin to resolve.

Once the pain and inflammation are under control, then it is time to assess the biomechanics of the foot and leg.

Biomechanics is the way that your foot and leg move when you walk and run. A proper assessment of your biomechanics by

a physiotherapist can determine if there are any problems in your foot or ankle that need to be corrected to help fix the shin splints.

Stretching exercises for tight lower leg muscles or strengthening exercises for muscle imbalances are often required to restore proper function to the foot and ankle. In some cases, the position of the foot needs to be corrected with orthotic insoles to decrease the amount of stress on the shinbone during walking or running.

As well as stretching and strengthening the

muscles around the lower leg to help restore proper function, a physiotherapist may suggest changes to your training program to help reduce the stress on the shinbone and give it time to heal.

Often times, fixing shin splints is as simple as making a few small changes to a training regime, to give the bone time to recover from the stress it is under during training.

There are three easy things that you can do to avoid shin splints. First, avoid rapid changes to a training program.

Try not to increase

your running distance by more than ten per cent per week. Second, wear properly fitting running shoes and replace them when they start to get worn out.

Third, make sure that you stretch regularly.

Remember, continuing to run until you can’t walk because your shins are too sore is never really a good idea. Get your pain assessed when it first starts

to prevent problems down the road. No pun intended.

In its purest form, stress is merely a stimulus that produces a response; without stressors, we simply wouldn’t survive very long. If we never felt the stress of hunger, for example, we wouldn’t be motivated to sustain our nutritional needs. Like it or not, we depend on stress for our own survival.

The issue with our modern society is that we generally

have too much of the wrong kind of stress. Stress primarily affects two parts of our nervous system: the parasympathetic and the sympathetic.

The parasympathetic system, sometimes referred to as “rest & digest,” conserves our energy by slowing our heart rate and promoting digestion of food. Many of the body’s restorative and

healing functions can only occur within the parasympathetic state. The sympathetic system, also known as “fight or flight,” expends energy by increasing heart rate, secreting adrenaline and directing blood to the muscles to enable quick responses.

The countless stressors we face every day, especially

those “fight or flight” stimuli, keep our nervous system in a constant state of firing. This slowly wears us down and leaves our

bodies more susceptible to disease unless we can find a

way to keep our stress levels in check.

Hands-on therapies like massage, Reflexology and Reiki are great tools to combat the effects

of excessive stress. All have the ability to invoke the “rest & digest” part of our nervous system, which will in turn decrease our stress and anxiety levels.

In order to achieve the “rest & digest” state, treatments should be 60 minutes or longer, have a full-body approach and not be too painful or over-stimulating. The greatest long-term results are achieved through regular treatments ever four to six weeks.

Don’t wait for your body to start crumbling under the pressure. As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

PORT McNEILL—After embarking on a whale-watching tour from historic Telegraph Cove, then viewing the cultural icons of the Kwakwaka’Wakw First Nations on display at Alert Bay’s U’mista Cultural Centre, a group of 29 foreign exchange students then got a serious taste of Canadian culture.

They attended their first hockey game.

North Island residents entering Chilton Regional Arena for the home season opener of their rep midget hockey team were surprised — and a little bemused — when several vans and SUVs pulled up to disgorge more than two dozen teens, chattering excitedly in a multitude of languages.

“They asked what was happening here, and we told them it was a hockey game,” said Beth Slater of Port McNeill. “Then they

asked if it cost money to get in, and we said, ‘No, come on in.’”

That they did, setting up camp in a tight block in the lower rows of bleachers right at centre ice and quickly getting the hang of cheering goals and hits and groaning over near-misses just like the rest of the fans in attendance.

“We’re from the Langley School District, and we’ve got students here from Spain, Brazil, Japan and Germany,”

said Lorna Goulet, one of several adult chaperones with the group. “We came up Thursday (Sept. 26) to stay at Telegraph Cove and go whale-watching, and were over in Alert Bay today.”

The hockey game was not on the tour itinerary, but the SD35 group had just returned on the ferry from Cormorant Island and was en route through Port McNeill to Telegraph Cove with several hours to

kill when participants noticed all the activity at the arena.

They gave a substantial boost to the modest crowd in the arena for the local North Island Eagles’ game against visiting Cowichan Valley, and proved a hit with the locals when they spontaneously broke into the ‘wave’. The students also were quick to adopt the home team, starting a chant of, “Let’s go, Eagles!” during particularly tense parts

of what turned out to be a close, evenly-matched game.

At one point, one of the referees skated over to the glass and tossed over a puck, which the students took turns posing with for photos by their mates.

A few of the youths maintained a common North American pose, head bowed over a smart phone. But most were animated, active and followed the game closely. One girl who had visited Canada before said she had seen Team USA play Team Canada in Toronto previously, but for most it was their first time in person at a hockey game.

After the game, the students were invited on the ice for a group photo with “their” Eagles. Things nearly got out of hand when a few of the students started to slide off down the rink in their street shoes, but Eagles coach D’arcy Deacon and the referees quickly steered them back to the exit.

Exchange students get some hockey culture

The weather was ideal for the Roberts Lake family fun shing derby held on Saturday September 21st. This is the second year the derby was put on by Lorna Duncan. 60 registered for the derby and more than 25 sh were caught. The majority of the trout was between 1 and 2 pounds and was caught later in the day. Water temperature was at 68 degrees and the sh were down deep.

Anglers were trolling spoons and lures and the big sh of the day was caught by John Einaudi his 5.1 pound rainbow trout was the

derby winner. Second largest was Mike Crumley with a 1.9 and third were Tim Johnson and Sandy Branch with a 1.3 pound trout. Those that came out were treated with hot dogs and chili supplied by Roberts Lake resort. BC Parks and the Campbell River Environmental Committee had to postpone the Campbell River and Quinsam river cleanup from Sunday sept 22 to Wed the 25th. The cleanup was from below the dam down to the houses on the road side, the roadway on the treed side of the river, the canyon trail, the Quinsam trail and below the small bridge at the con uence of Quinsam and Campbell Rivers.
