Vanesa Wallet Hardi’s life retraces the events

of 20th century Central and East European

history, marked by the collapse of the Eastern

Block. The artist was born in 1971 in Vrbas –

Yugoslavia and she spent her childhood in

a Slovak vicinity in Vojvodina. From 1985 to

1989 she studied at the Design Art School of

Belgrade. Just before Yugoslavia was torn

apart, she moved to Slovakia where she

became a student at the High School for Fine

Arts (1990/1996 – Professor Jan Berger). She

took advantage of the borders opening to

undertake parallel studies at the Academy

of Fine Arts in Vienna (1994/1999 - Professor

Günter Damisch). After graduating, she settled

down in Prague with her family.

On entering her professional career, Vanesa

Wallet Hardi was awarded two prestigious

prizes of recognition: the Prize of the Austrian

Federal Ministry for her dissertation (awarded

on completion of her studies in Vienna) and

the TONAL Prize, awarded in 2000 for the

Young Artist of the Year in Slovakia.

Vanesa Wallet Hardi systematicaly devotes

herself to monochromy. The central theme

running thoughout her work is colour, its

potential and the means by which colour

can be brought into tangible essence and

evoke psychophysical effects. Monochrome

is not an impersonal concept for the artist, a

purely rationally constructed artefact, but a

real place into which the author’s gesture is

entering; marks of the physical process, the

treatment and the application of colour paste

are shown in it through individual handwriting

and personal colouristic preference is thus

revealed. The key theme in Vanesa Wallet

Hardi’s work is the relationship between

colour and background. The monochrome

surface enters into a complex and dynamic

game with the pad, whether involving a wide

repertoire of materials (canvas, wood, metal,

plexiglass, paper), or a space configuration

(area, overlapping of transparent surfaces,

3D installation). Contrary to the traditional

concept of picture hanging, emphasis is given

to the side part of the paintings – compounds

which bear the marks of overlapping colour

layers, thus giving evidence to the process

of how they were created, more than being

only a frontal area. Out of it evolves a kind of

emancipation of coloured surfaces in relation

with different sorts of agregates, which

enables the transformation of the space, the

layering, the overlapping and the addition of

individual colour fields.

The relations inducted in the frame of the art

work are more important than the cleanliness

of the monochrome areas.

The Work of Vanesa Wallet Hardi doesn’t

however lead towards a conceptual reflection

of monochrome painting. The rationally

conceived structure serves in essence as a

means to achieving an intuitive and expressive

artistic gesture. The artist herself says:

"What is interesting for me is the transfer of

energy – mental energy in the material. The

painting emerges as a transformation of a

strong experience into the reached shape

by reduction. The paintings represent the

concentration of feelings and thoughts. I

create a dialogue between each of them,

similarly as with the given space. A clear order

and tension result from that".

The artistic process doesn’t stop at the

level of individual paintings. Plenty of them

– especially the smaller ones – emerge

as a compound that ends up becoming a

composition of a far higher rank. They then

become elements of a painting constellation

realized for different exhibitions, reacting

to space conditions and the proportions of

different galleries. The appearance of the

painting compound changes every time in a

new dynamic of emotional and psychophysical

effect of the colour fields.
