How can we distinguish between them
Non-defining clauses Defining clauses
They give extra information. Not needed.Ex : My grandfather , who is 87, goes swimming every week.
They are important . They give essential information to understand .
Ex : the meal which they served us was salty .
must have commas . Teacher Huwaida ,who teaches
physics , is very serious
They aren’t separated by commas .
I can’t use that
I can substitute (who / which) by that . That is the woman who lives across the road.
This is the woman that lives across the road
