Foreword

Some may ask, why would Lord Bell write the foreword to a book ona subject that seems so distant from his immediate interests? I askedthis question myself and quickly found the answer: passion andflair. I recognise them in life immediately and have a great regard forboth. The best results in what we do, as professionals, are achievedwhen we work with passion and flair. Without these qualities theprocess as well as the outcome is that much more tedious andlaboured. When I first met Andrei Reus, one of the authors of this weightyvolume, I sensed this passion when he was telling me about the bookand what he believed it would bring to the English-speaking world. Ialso recall the admiration and respect showed to his teacher, GeorgyShchedrovitsky, and this further stirred my curiosity about theproject. All the authors are extremely successful in their careers, andthis is a clear testimony to the value of Shchedrovitsky’s research, ideas and the body of knowledge he left behind.

In my line of work, in order to convince, persuade or alter people’sperceptions and attitudes, I often need to present the best argumentpossible. Clarity of thinking about a problem will usually be reflectedin the clarity of the solution. The readers of this book are presentedwith ways of tackling various problems, resolving tricky managerialsituations and achieving organisational targets. The techniquesof thinking offered here will be useful for professionals working invarious fields – government administration, management of individualcompanies and state-run corporations, corporate governanceand general decision-making practices. But this book is not just about theoretical approaches to methodologyof management, it raises the curtain on a host of practical issuesand offers tremendous and exciting insights into modern Russianhistory and realities. The Methodological School of Management will bemet with interest by a wide range of specialists – historians, politicalcommentators, industrialists – but most of all, it would be invaluablefor those who are learning how to manage people and issuesalike. So, read it, enjoy it, use it!Lord Bell
