Reading Probes

Reading probes are a curriculum-based assessment that show small increments of growth over time. Although reading probes are done very frequently in the classroom, the portfolio of your child will reflect a reading probe from the beginning of the year and their final assessment at each grade level.

Reading fluency assessment provides feedback to teachers and students on the three traits of fluent reading:

Expression

Smoothness

Pace

Using these three indicators, students are assessed at least twice during each school year to record student growth in the area of fluency.

Running Records/Lexile Levels

Running records are kept for students in grades 1-3*. Student progress at the 13 reading levels used in the Scholastic Reading Series are kept showing attempts and mastery at each of the 13 levels. Grade Level Running Records Guidelines

Lexile levels are used in grades 3-6 to show the difficulty of the material that students are attempting and mastering in their daily reading. Grade Level Lexile Level Guidelines
