    INTRODUCTIONSan Diego is a beautiful coastal city located inSouthern California just 20 minutes fromMexico. It is known for its warm climate thatremains moderate throughout the year.Seascapes, beaches, mountains, and desertsmake up the varied landscape of this area,making San Diego one of the premier vacationdestinations for people worldwide.San Diego is a very easy-going city withspectacular scenery and many entertainmentpossibilities.

    There are many great places to visit, includingBalboa Park, which is a short walk from theheart of downtown and LSI. Full of museums,gardens, artist colonies, fountains, walkingtrails, architecture, and gorgeous views of theSan Diego Harbor and downtown area, thispark is known as one of the favorite spots forboth locals and visitors alike.

    While visiting the park, many people enjoystopping by the world famous San Diego Zoo.

    Known for its lush foliage, unique and rareinhabitants, including many animal species,the zoo is truly a site to see! It is a wonderfulplace to walk around and take photos.

    Voted as having the second most perfectweather in the world and with a multitude ofoutdoor adventure opportunities, San Diego isa top tourist destination.

    While you are out enjoying the beautiful SanDiego weather, you can also feel comfortable

    knowing that you are in the safest big city inthe United States.

    EXPERIENCE SAN DIEGOSan Diegans are always out trying to findthings to see and do. Since we are just southof Hollywood in Los Angeles, the acting andperforming in San Diego theatres is fabulous!There are also many opportunities to see

    sporting events such as the ThunderboatRegatta at Mission Bay or Supercross atQualcomm Stadium.

    Attending concerts and festivals are amongactivities San Diegans enjoy, and it is neverhard to find some of your favorite artistsplaying in town. There are popular yearlyfestivals to go to as well, including Coachella,a three-day concert series held each summer.

    IN ANDAROUND SAN DIEGOThe city of San Diego has much to offer itsvisitors. Since the weather is so nice, there isa wide variety of outdoor activities that people

    can participate in. There are only a few selectcities in the world where you can surf or golf

    and snowboard or ski all within an hour or twotravel time. With mountains, desert andnumerous beaches and parks among itsnatural treasures, San Diego is certainly aunique place to visit!

    Imperial Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach,Pacific Beach, La Jolla Beach.there are somany to choose from! Head to Mission Beachfor some beach volleyball and a ride on thewooden rollercoaster or take some friends toLa Jolla Cove for a picnic along the rocky

    shore and watch the waves crash against thecliffs.

    If mountains and deserts are what you prefer,you can visit Cuyamaca State Park in easternSan Diego County for hiking and mountainbiking. You can also go to the gold miningtown of Julian to enjoy some of their famousapple pie!

    North of San Diego there is much to see aswell. Los Angeles is only 2 hours away.

    There you can visit Hollywood, UniversalStudios, Disneyland, and the Santa MonicaPier. The mountains just to the east providetons of winter entertainment in the form ofskiing, snowboarding, and tubing during themonths of October through March.

    One of the worlds largest salt lakes is locatednear San Diego as well. Known as the SaltonSea, it is famous for its tilapia fishing and thesand dunes that surround the area. Manypeople enjoy riding four-wheelers or

    motorbikes through this world famous sandyarea known as Ocotillo Wells.

    LSI is conveniently located close to the heartof downtown San Diego and is an easy walkfrom dining, entertainment, shopping, majortransportation routes, and many majorattractions.

    RANGE AND FLEXIBILITY

    Between the range of courses we offer and theflexible weekly schedules we provide, we areconfident that LSI can meet the needs of anystudent or business executive. In addition, LSIBerkeley and LSI Boston follow the sameprogram. This makes it easy to study at eitherof these schools without any additional fees.LSI New York is on the same program as well,but students may need to pay additional feessince their pricing is different.

    ASSESSMENT

    During their first morning at LSI, students are

    welcomed before being assessed for theircurrent skills in reading, writing, listening, andspeaking English. Following this session, our

    Academic Director will create a PersonalStudy Plan with each long-term studentbefore placing them into the class level whichwill benefit the student the most. Regularreview of project work, weekly test results, andpersonal attention all help to improve studentsEnglish skills.

    INTERNATIONALATMOSPHERE

    We have had students from 37 countries thisyear. Studying at LSI gives students awonderful chance to interact not only with

    Americans, but also with professionals andother students from around the world.

    Because of this interaction, students develop abetter understanding of other cultures andlearn more about themselves and each other.

    ACTIVITIES

    The LSI program includes a busy calendar ofsocial activities for students to enjoy in theirfree time. Whether students would like to gocamping and hiking or cave kayaking andscuba diving, there are plenty of activities tochoose from. Students will find many chancesto meet new friends and practice their Englishskills at the same time.CERTIFICATEUpon successful completion of their course,students receive our Certificate ofCompletion. Signed by the School Directorand the Director of Studies, it indicates thestudents English level, as well as the durationof their program.

    INTERACTIVE CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES

    LSIs goal in our general English classes is togive students the opportunity to practice theirEnglish.

    To make the learning process more enjoyable,we use a range of multi-media tools with a

    variety of teaching techniques. LSI wants togive students the chance to learn English in apractical way so that they can confidently usethese skills in the future.

    FACILITIES AND NEIGHBORHOOD

    LSI San Diego is only a short walk from theGaslamp District of downtown San Diego.There are many comfortable and uniquerestaurants, cafes, clubs, and shops to visitthere, especially in Horton Plaza. The SantaFe Transit Station is just minutes away, andthere are many different bus stops alongBroadway, the main street in downtown. Thetrolley stops at many places a few blocks upfrom Broadway. This offers easy access toother areas of the city and to LSI.

    LSI is located on the third floor of a modernofficebuilding in downtown San Diego on Fifth

    Avenue. We offer free Internet service tostudents as well as WiFi. We also have Skypeon all 10 of the computers in our StudentComputer Lab. Our classrooms are decorated

    brightly, and our Student Lounge is made forstudent comfort, with a microwave, hot pot,refrigerator, and toaster. Here students canrelax, eat lunch, or enjoy some time withfriends. Up-to-date audio/visual equipment,software, and learning materials help ourteachers to deliver lessons that arechallenging, creative, and practical for thefuture.

    Please note that, as is true of all publicbuildings in California, there is no smoking

    allowed in the building. We ask that studentsstep outside and at least 20 feet away from allbuilding entrances in order to smoke.

    Balboa Park, which is only a five-minute walkfrom LSI, is a wonderful place for students torelax and unwind. The San Diego Harbor,

    which is fifteen minutes away, is also a niceplace to sit or walk and enjoy the beautiful SanDiego scenery. Also, minutes away from LSIis Little Italy, where students can go to study ina caf or eat some wonderful Italian food.

    LSIINTENSIVE 30:

    LSI invites students to select as many weeksas they need from 1 to 48 weeks. As a result,this 30 lesson per week program is perfect forstudents who want the same afternoon optionsas the ISY 30 but need less than 24 weeks ofstudy.

    LSISTANDARD 20:

    This 20 lesson per week program follows thesame morning schedule as the ISY 30 andIntensive 30. As a semi-intensive course, thisis perfect for students who need integratedskills without afternoon classes.

    INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL YEAR (ISY)PROGRAMS:

    LSI understands that students want a quality

    program that offers flexibility and value for money.The fact that over 20% of our students return toLSI or refer their friends shows how good thisprogram is.

    9 Day Compact

    This executive program is for all those withexacting language needs that must be metquickly.

    One-to-One

    This is ideal for students who have veryspecific needs that they would like LSI toconcentrate on.

    English for Business

    Intermediate to Advanced Levels10 lessons per week as an afternoon electivecourse, following a cycle of 12 weeks, eachone dealing with a specific area of business(e.g. leadership, marketing, negotiating, teambuilding, etc.). Each of these business areaswill be practiced with special focus onspeaking and listening skills. Also available asa Mini Group course of 20 or 30 lessons perweek for 1-4 weeks.

    English for Teaching(Intermediate to Advanced Levels )

    5-10 One-to-One lessons per week with aStandard 20 course. Aimed at speakers ofother languages who wish to gain aqualification to teach English. 3 modules arestudied over 4 weeks. Available eachMonday.

    CAMBRIDGE EXAM PREPARATION30 lessons per week

    Intermediate to Advanced Levels

    The Cambridge programs cover a wide range

    of academic and vocational topics, includingexaminations specially designed for theinternational market. LSI San Diego offerspreparatory courses for the Cambridge FCE,CAE, CPE, and BEC exams, which areinternationally recognized as standards ofcompetency in English.     TOEIC(TEST OF ENGLISH FORINTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION)

    Pre-Intermediate to Advanced

    TOEIC measures the everyday English skillsof people working in an internationalenvironment. It may be used when applyingfor jobs or for entry into certain internationalstudy programs.In this course, students joinmorning Standard 20 classes for integratedskills and have Plus 5 or Plus 10 afternoonOne-to-One lessons for test preparation.

    TOEFL(TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN

    This class can be either the afternoon portionof an Intensive 30 course, or the ISY 30program.

    TOEFL is a standard test for entry to collegesand universities throughout the United Statesand Canada.The class prepares students for the fourcomponents of the examination. Students

    Designed to meet the needs of tomorrow'sinternational professionals, this course lasts24, 30, 36 or 48 weeks.This course is comprised of 20 or 30 lessonsper week and gives students the chance tobuild a very solid foundation in English. It alsoprovides the opportunity to study a variety ofelectives, including our preparation courses forCambridge, TOEFL and TOEIC exams, or theEnglish for Business course. The key word inthis program is flexibility, accomplished bycreating students Personal Study Plans.

    ORIENTATION DAY

    Welcome!

    On the first day of school, new students will beevaluated for level placement and given anoverview of our programs.

    From the results of the placement test and oralevaluation given before orientation, students

    are placed into the level appropriate for them.In the classroom, teachers use acommunicative approach to teach English.The students develop language skills whichwill also prove useful in everyday situationswhile living in San Diego.

    The entire curriculum is structured to follow aprogression from level to level. New skills areintroduced, while existing skills are reinforcedthrough listening, speaking, reading, andwriting.

    SCHEDULE FOR THE FIRST DAY

    9:10 am: Welcome, introduction of staff, and

    registration takes place.

    9:30 am 10:50 am: Placement test

    10:50 am 11:10 am: Break

    11:10 am 12:50 pm: Orientation

    12:50 pm 1:50 pm: Lunch

    1:50 pm 4:05 pm: Standard 20 students arefree to explore the city.

    1:50 pm 4:05 pm: Intensive 30 students willbegin the afternoon portion of their course.

    LSISOCIALACTIVITIES

    LSI organizes social events during the weekas well as many weekend tours andexcursions. These activities give students thechance to appreciate other cultures within theLSI family. In 2011, we welcomed 37nationalities.

    Activities include trips to the theatre, cinema,musicals, concerts, museums, art galleries,sporting events, and amusement parks.Weekend trips include Los Angeles, LasVegas, Universal Studios, Disneyland, and

    many more.

    Some of the tourist venues within 20 minutesof LSI San Diego are as follows: the SanDiego Zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, Padresbaseball at Petco Park, Seaport Village, SanDiego Harbor, Old Town National Park,Cabrillo National Monument, San Diegobeaches, La Jolla Cove, Mission Bay, Birchs

    Aquarium, Chargers football at QualcommStadium, the Gaslamp District, Horton Plaza,and many more!

    ARRIVAL ANDAIRPORTTRANSFER

    After exiting the plane, students should simplyproceed to the Baggage Claim Area to pick uptheir bags from the baggage carouselcorresponding to their flight number. If their

    flight had a connection, they will have alreadygone through customs and immigration upon

    initial entry in a U.S. airport.

    From the airport, there are three ways forstudents to reach their host family, residencehotel, or hotel.

    AIRPORT TRANSFER

    If the student has booked an airport transfer aLSI representative will meet the student in theBaggage Claim area. It is important that LSIreceive accurate flight arrival informationincluding: airline name, flight number, andarrival time at least one week prior to arrival.Please advise students to look carefully for asign with his/her name on it. If for somereason the student does not see ourrepresentative, he/she should wait in theBaggage Claim area until the representativeis located.

    TAXI

    Taking a taxi in San Diego is very safe and

    simple. Outside of each airport terminal therewill be taxis waiting to transport passengers totheir destinations. The approximate cost pertrip is $20 to $60.

    BUS

    The San Diego bus system offerstransportation from each airport terminal.There are signs marked with a bus symbol thatsay MTS Bus Stop on them where people can

    stand and wait for the bus. The average costper trip is $2.25. See the next page for more

    information.

    GENERAL TRANSPORTATION

    PUBLIC TRANSIT

    San Diegos transit system includes citybuses, the trolley, and the Coaster (to name afew).

    FARES

    Each trip costs approximately $2.25 to $2.50cash. Students can purchase one-daytickets, four-day tickets, but most purchasemonthy passes. If passengers pay cash for aticket they can transfer between the bus andthe trolley using the Transfer Ticket, for anadditional fee.

    BUS/TROLLEY

    Bus and trolley routescover the entire SanDiego area, making iteasy to reach majorattractions anddestinations. Buses andtrolleys can bothaccommodate bicyclesat no additional charge.You can plan your tripbeforehand by visitingwww.sdcommute.com.

    THE COASTER

    The Coaster is the name San Diegans use forthe train system that runs up the coast fromSan Diego to Oceanside. It is available every

    day of the week except Sunday and costsroughly $5.00 to $6.50 one-way. One-trip,

    two-trip, and ten-trip tickets may be purchasedat any station; monthly passes are available atthe Transit Store in downtown San Diego. VisitGoNCTD.com for more. North of Oceanside,the train system becomes Metrolink. This is aseparate company that offers travel every dayof the week throughout Los Angeles. Faresmay vary: metrolinktrains.com.

    AMTRAK

    Amtrak is a national train service company that

    offers transportation between San Diego andLos Angeles, as well as throughout thecountry. The trains run daily and prices varydepending on where you are traveling to.More information can be found onAmtrak.com

    BICYCLE

    Many people, including some of our teachersand students, commute to school by bike. It iseconomical and sometimes faster than anyother means of transportation. You can evenbike part of the way and then take the busand/or trolley part of the way. Bicycles can bepurchased either new or used throughout thecity.Many people love to ride their bikes aroundBalboa Park or the San Diego Harbor afterschool in order to relax and keep fit.

    CORONADO FERRY

    The Coronado Ferry runs from the BroadwayPier in downtown San Diego to the CoronadoFerry Landing in Coronado. It departs from theBroadway Pier every hour on the hour from 9am to 9 pm and on Friday and Saturday at 10pm. From Coronado, it departs every hour onthe half-hour from 9:30 am to 9:30 pm and onFriday and Saturday at 10:30 pm. The triptakes about 10 minutes and costs $4.50 perone-way trip. Bicycles may also be taken onthe ferry for no additional cost.

    CAR

    There are many car rental agencies in SanDiego where short or long-term economyrentals are available.

    Renters must be at least 25 years old (21 atsome agencies) and have a valid driver'slicense and major credit card.Remember that driving laws in California maydiffer from the ones in your home country.Please be aware of these differences andmake sure that you feel comfortable with thembefore renting a car.

    ACCOMMODATION

    All of LSI San Diego's accommodations arecarefully selected to ensure that they meet ourquality standards.

    HOMESTAY PROGRAM

    The majority of students who attend classes atLSI San Diego choose to live with Americanhost families during their stay. The greatestadvantage of a homestay experience is theopportunity to communicate and interact with

    Americans outside of the classroom.

    Our hosts provide a comfortable private room,

    completely furnished with all the amenities of ahome. We offer two types of homestay to ourstudents: a half-board program that includesbreakfast and dinner and a bed and breakfastprogram that includes breakfast only.

    Hosts are within a 50 minute commute of LSISan Diego by public transportation. OurHomestay Coordinator carefully selects allhost families to ensure that eachstudents staywill be comfortable, enjoyable and thatstudents will be made to feel at home and safe.

    Our families homes range in size fromcondominiums to larger homes.

    Americans are very good about welcomingstudents in as a part of their family, so studentsshould not be surprised if their hostencourages them to join them in the kitchen toprepare a meal.

    Most hosts will involve students in menuselection and some hosts are able to
