Il prodotto cinematografico diventa, sintesi tra la tradizione e la modernit

di una terra spesso lontana da quella di residenza ma che, grazie ad

unesplosione di creativit artistica, in grado di evocare i ricordi lontani,

da una parte, e di giungere a conoscenza di una realt distante, dallaltra.

SICILY ON SHOW

The end product of movie making becomes a combination of tradition and

modernity of a land that is often far away from the land of residence but

which, thanks to an upsurge of artistic creativity, is on the one hand, able to

evoke distant memories and, on the other hand, to bring about a awareness

of a far away reality.

Il Consolato dItalia lieto di associarsi alla manifestazione cinematograficaLa Sicilia in Rassegna, promossa dalla Regione Siciliana in collaborazionecon il Sicilia Club di Adelaide (28 luglio-1 agosto 2008).

Si tratta di una preziosa occasione per immergersi in uno dei luoghi piaffascinanti dItalia e del mondo, attraverso le immagini di cinque giovani

registi.

Il film di apertura, Salvatore: questa la vita, di Gian Paolo Cugno, mettein scena, in una cornice di paesaggi spettacolari ed autentici, una storia cheripropone il tema della scoperta, da parte di un abitante del Nord, dellapiccola realt di un paesino siciliano.

Il cinema arte, comunicazione, mezzo despressione: un veicolo

importante per esprimere le tradizioni, i valori, la cultura di un popolo, lasua storia. Il mio augurio quindi che levento diventi uno strumento peravvicinare le nuove generazioni al patrimonio culturale italiano e susciti,per i discendenti di italiani, linteresse e lorgoglio per le proprie origini.

Esprimo qui tutto il mio apprezzamento alla Regione Siciliana che havoluto realizzare questo progetto nel lontano Sud Australia e al SiciliaClub di Adelaide che, per potere ospitare levento nel migliore dei modi, ha

voluto acquistare un nuovo impianto audio.

Message from the Italian Consul for South Australia

The Consulate of Italy is proud to be a part of the film festival Sicily in theSpotlight, promoted by the Sicilian Region in collaboration with the SiciliaClub of Adelaide (28 July 1 August 2008).

The event constitutes a precious occasion to step into one of the mostfascinating places in Italy and in the world, through the images of five

young directors.

The opening night film, Salvatore: questa la vita by Gian Paolo Cugno,portrays the theme of the discovery of the intriguing lifestyle of a small,traditional Sicilian village, by a northern Italian teacher.

Cinema is art, communication, form of expression: it is an important vehicleto express traditions, values, culture, history.

My wish is that this event may attract the new generations to the Italiancultural heritage, particularly but not exclusively for those of Italianorigin.

I would thus like to convey all my appreciation to the Sicilian Region and tothe Sicilia Club of Adelaide, that has gone so far as to buy a new soundsystem for the event.

Plot Line: We are in the early 1980s and for Saro Scordia Cosa Nostra is a greatthing, worthy of respect. Gaetano Butera ,a Mafioso of some standing beginskeeping an eye on this poor barefoot young boy who is also bright, intelligentand brave and explains to him that if he knows how to prove himself he willhave a future among the men of honour. So begin Saros first steps in a

criminal life. The first robberies and extorsions go to his head and make Sarobelieve he is different from common men, a wolf amongst sheep with money,women and respect, all things a poor lad like he had never had. But Ada, whoSaro has loved since a childhood is also part of his life. Ada is his same age, butalready seems a woman, sharing passions in suburban hotels, but she does notwant him as a husband as she does not want a mafiosos life. And this drivehim crazy He tries to leave her, to refuse her, to stop thinking about her. Heeven marries another woman, but he cannot forget her. In the meantime his

career advances. He is asked to murder a drug trafficker in Milan who hadoffended the gang and his reward will be official membership to Cosa Nostra.However, the murder is not the act of bravery that Scordia had imagined, butonly a clumsy, dirty, brutal inhuman act of cruelty. As he witnesses that poormans death Saro loses his conviction. That bumbling death without dignitythat he had committed at the orders of other men on a victim he did not evenknow is the beginning of the breakdown of his beliefsSicilyShe too is a woman, mysterious, implacable, vindictive and beautiful.
