Trivial Pursuit The Medrash  Tanchuma  (#5) 

tells  us  that  there  are  gifts  a 

person  may  have,  some  of 

which  remain with him  for a 

long period of time, and some 

of which wither away after an 

unexpectedly  short  period  of 

time.  The  Medrash  tells  us 

that  there were  two people – 

one  Jewish and one Gentile –  

who were  fabulously wealthy,  but  came  to  lose 

their wealth: Korach was the Jew and Haman was 

the gentile. Why was  this  so? The Medrash  tells 

us it was because their wealth did not come from 

Hashem, but rather they grabbed that which was 

not designated for them. So too, the Medrash lists 

the  tribes  of  Gad  and  Reuven  as  having  great 

wealth,  but  then  losing  it while  going  into  exile 

before the other 10 tribes.  

I saw this Medrash explained using the following 

principle: We  all have  an  obligation  to make  an 

effort  (hishtadlus)  in  order  to  support  ourselves. 

However,  a person who  over‐works  to  generate 

greater wealth will eventually  lose that which he 

has acquired, similar  to a  thief who will  lose  the 

possessions which he has stolen. We do not find 

anywhere in chazal that implies that Korach stole, 

nor that the tribes of Gad or Reuven became rich 

through any kind of  illicit gain. We only find  in 

this  Medrash  that  they  “grabbed”  –  becoming 

overly  aggressive  in  their  pursuit  of  parnassa. It 

seems  that  the Medrash is  comparing  “grabbing” 

to  “stealing”,  and  this  grabbing  is what  caused 

their eventual downfall.  

There  is  a  story  told  about  the  Kotzker  Rebbe, 

who saw a man race out of shul before the end of 

the  last Kaddish  (barchu),  grabbed  his  pushcart, 

and rushed off to sell his wares. The Rebbe asked 

him  “Where  are  you  going?”  and  the man  an‐(Continued on page 2)

in the other direction and you are running away 

from  it.”  (meaning:  maybe  you  would  make 

more money by doing what a Jew is supposed to 

do  (thereby gaining  siyata dishmaya)   and stay  in 

synagogue until the end of shacharis, as opposed 

to trying to grab an opportunity, by leaving shul 

early which might not be good for you after all).  

Typically,  at  this  time  of  year,  when  we  slow 

down  from  our  normal  parnassa pursuits,  we 

seem to see hishtadlus as not as pressing as usual. 

Maybe we should see this as the standard of how 

much  hishtadlus we  should  be doing during  the 

rest of the year. In our spare time, when we use it 

properly  (e.g.  to  spiritual pursuits  that we have 

neglected  during  the  rest  of  the  year), we may 

find  out  that  these  spiritual  pursuits  may  be 

counted by Hashem as hishtadlus itself!

Q After hearing ʺEichaʺ at Kehillas Ahavas Tefillah, Shlomo Kagan returned home. There were still a few hours 

left in the night, and his client in California needed some work done. He wasnʹt going to work on Tisha BʹAv 

day, as that was his custom, so this seemed  like a perfect time to attend to this work. Is he permitted to work on 

Tisha BʹAv night? 

A No. The reason that people do not work on Tisha BʹAv day is so that they can put aside their concerns about 

work and, instead, concentrate on mourning the destruction of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple. The night has 

an equal status as  the day, and one  is supposed  to have  these mournful  thoughts at night. Note  that at noon on 

Tisha BʹAv day, Ashkenazim will often resume their regular work..

Q When Avrumy saw his mother boiling a pot of 

eggs on  the day before Tisha BʹAv, he  realized 

that  this was going  to be his  ʺmain  courseʺ  for  the 

seuda mafsekes — the  last meal before the start of the 

fast.  ʺMy Rebbe says we are supposed  to have one 

cooked  dish — why  canʹt we  have  fish  instead  of 

eggs?!ʺ he asked. May Mrs. Kagan prepare  cooked 

fish for this last meal, according to 1. the M.B. and 2. 

the A.H.? 

A M.B.: Cooked fish  is  forbidden  for  this meal, 

just as it is forbidden to have chicken or beef. 

A.H.: Cooked fish is permitted at this meal. While it 

is  true  that  the S.A. says  it  is forbidden,  it  is a mis‐

take and a printerʹs error, as fish and meat are very 

different.

Q The ninth of Av fell on a Shabbos, so  it was 

pushed off until the next day. Millicent Shel‐

don  prepared  a  normal  seuda shlishis since  there 

would be no  ʺseuda mafsekes.ʺ Would  it be proper 

for her to invite Arthur and Judy Goldberg to her 

home,  so  they  could  all have  this  third meal  to‐

gether? 

A No. Even though we do not show any signs of 

mourning  on  Shabbos,  and  have  a  normal 

third meal, we should not increase happiness at this 

time, so no guests should be invited. However, if the 

Sheldons had  a  family member or  friend who was 

always a guest  for  their  third meals, he may  come 

again, as  ʺdisinvitingʺ him would be a clear sign of 

mourning on Shabbos, which would be prohibited.

Share Your Torah… Or Else!

Join R’ Baruch and his friends, and come to hear an Amud Yomi shiur in Sanhedrin. IYH We are about to embark on 

Perek Chelek, so now is the time. Chelek is known to be full of fascinating Agadah and packed with important concepts 

in Jewish Hashkafa. Sun‐Thurs, 9:15‐10:15am. Shiur given by Akiva Teichtal.   

The Gemara in Maseches Sanhedrin  (68a) brings down 

the tragic story of Rabi Eliezer, who was put under cherem

by his  fellow  chaverim. Upon his deathbed, he expressed 

his bitterness caused by not being able to share his Torah 

with others (people under cherem cannot teach others). He 

said: “I don’t know if these people (his peers) will die nat‐

urally”,  indicating a curse. He  then  targeted Rabi Akiva, 

saying that his fate will be even harsher. Rabi Akiva, be‐

ing  greater  than  others, would  have  been  able  to  grasp 

Rabi Eliezer’s Torah better  (and pass  it on  too),  thus  the 

hakpada against him was stronger (Rashi, ibid).  

R’ Baruch Reens  added  an  important  point: As we  all 

know, Rabi Akiva died a very unnatural death by the Ro‐

mans (Brachos …) and so, Rabi Eliezer’s words were ful‐

filled.  It’s  interesting  to note  that  the “sin” he was pun‐

ished for by the Romans was nothing but teaching Torah 

to the public.  

Perhaps  this was  some  sort  of tikkun  to  the  fact  that  he 

didn’t transmit Rav Eliezer’s Torah?  

(Please note that from a halachic point of view Rabi Akiva 

was obviously right, as he couldn’t have broken the cher-

em. However, Rabi Eliezer’s hakpada was still there…)

ראיתי הסבר למדרש זה על פי העיקרון הבא: כולנו חייבים להשתדל כדי לפרנס את עצמנו. עם זאת, מי שעובד יתר על המידה כדי להרוויח עושר רב, יפסיד שיפסיד דבר את מה שרכש, בדומה לגנב של בסופו ם מקו ם בשו ם מוצאי לא אנחנו שגנב. הרכוש את בחז"ל שקורח גנב, ולא ששבטי גד או ראובן התעשרו ם אנו מוצאי חוקי. לא רווח של סוג כל באמצעות

הפכו להיות תוקפניים מדי -במדרש רק שהם "תפסו" וזה מה שגרם לנפילתם לאחר זמן. -בעסק הפרנסה

בורח אדם שראה להרבי מקוצק, סיפור מיוחס יש מבית הכנסת לפני סוף הקדיש האחרון (וברכו), תופס שאל למכור את מרכולתו. הרבי את עגלתו, וממהר אותו "לאן אתה הולך?", ענה האיש, "כדי לפרנס את עצמי". הרבי שאל "איך אתה יודע שאתה רץ לקראת הפרנסה שלך? אולי הפרנסה שלך נמצאת בכיוון ההפוך ואתה בורח ממנה" (כלומר: אולי תרוויח יותר כסף על בבית לעשות ותישאר די ליהו שנכון די עשיית מה ידשמיא), הכנסת עד סוף שחרית (וכך תקבל סייעתא בניגוד ללנסות לתפוס הזדמנות, אשר סוף סוף יכולה

להיות פחות טובה בשבילך).

בדרך כלל, בתקופה זו של השנה, אנשים מורידים את הדחף הרגיל שלהם בעבודה, וההשתדלות שלנו פחות לחוצה כמו שאר השנה. בשלב זה, כדאי להקצות כמות להשקיע בפעילות עם רווח מובטחת: קטנה כדי זמן

עבודת ה'.
