PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger

GRADE 5/6 CAMP

Last week the children in grade 5/6 had the opportunity to attend a four day adventure camp at Phillip Island. Mark and myself had the opportunity to visit the camp last week and were extremely impressed with how polite and well behaved our students were. I received great feedback from all of the kids that at-tended, it was an experience they will always treasure. It should be acknowledged that we had 9 of our staff attend the camp (Nicole Bates, Mel Seal, Tyler Barry, Danielle Everest, Aaron Abella, Jemma Dunstan, Gabbi Peters, Ginger Parker and Jarryd Foster). They do this voluntarily and there is no overtime pay for teachers attending camp. The teachers attending give up their family time and take on a 24/7 responsibility of caring for our students. This is a huge commitment and parents should acknowledge and appreciate them providing this experience for their children.

LATE TO SCHOOL/ EARLY DEPARTURE

Please be aware that when your child arrives late to school, or leaves early, it has a significant impact on their learning. Late arrivals in the morning results in students missing crucial opportunities to connect with their peers and teacher and receive important information about the day ahead. We had 43 students arrive late today, this is unacceptable. I understand that there may have been additional traffic due to the weather, but parents need to keep this in mind when they are planning their morning. It was publicised through all news media that today was going to be a wet day, therefore parents should allow for this in their travel time to school to en-sure your child arrives on time for an 8.55am start.

When a student leaves school early, they miss valuable time with their class teacher and peers. Even in the afternoon sessions, students are highly engaged in a range of learning opportunities and when leaving early they are missing essential learning time. In particular, I have noticed a high volume of students being signed out early on a Friday afternoon during assembly. Unless your child has a medical appointment to attend on a Friday, it is my expectation that all students are present until 3.15pm so that they can be part of our weekly celebration of our learning.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger

STAFFING

As you would have heard at assembly today, we have a couple of changes to our current teaching staff: Catherine Medwin: our Visual Arts teacher, will be leaving us next week to commence an exciting position with CERES as an education consultant. Catherine was one of our foundation teachers and had a significant impact in establishing our school. She has been responsible for the establishment of our Enviro and Visual Arts programs. She has also been on School Council and provided whole school displays for all of our community events. Even though she will be in regular contact with the school through her new role, we will all miss her as a part of our regular Barton family.

Maisie Craven: one of our Education Support Staff, will be commencing work at Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School as an Education Support person. Maisie has provided educational support to many of our students with high learning needs.

We wish them both all the best in their endeavours.

BARTON UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB OPENING—18TH AUGUST

Next Sunday 18th August, Barton Recreation Reserve is celebrating it’s official opening. The cel-ebration will be running from 11.00am—3.00pm and it would be fantastic to see our Barton families there to support the opening. Please refer to the flyer that was emailed home earlier this week for more information.

OPEN MORNINGS

This week we had our Open Mornings in classroom. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents to see their child's learning in action. Thank you to all of our parents and relatives for arranging your work schedules to attend. The students were very excited to be able to show off their learning.

UNIFORM

A reminder to parents that School Bags are a part of our School Uniform, and it is expected that all students use only the Barton School Bag. When you enrolled your child at the school, you signed a uniform agreement, agreeing to adhere to full school uniform. In particular on any excursion if your child is not in 100% school uniform, they may not be permitted to attend. Please ensure that your child is sent to school in 100% school uniform everyday.

Dear Parents,

There have been a number of exciting events that our students have been in-volved in over the past 2 weeks. We have had our Lightning Premiership day where our 5/6 students competed in a number of different sports. Our best placed teams were our B team for soccer, teeball and our newcomb team. A big thanks to Ms Peters and the 5/6 teachers for their amazing efforts in coaching and mentor-ing the sides so that they had a great experience on the day.

It has been a busy time for the 5/6’s as they headed off to camp on Tuesday 6th August for a 4 day camp at Phillip Island Adventure Resort. I was lucky enough to head down on the Wednesday night to have dinner with the group and to watch the entertainment for the evening; which was ‘Barton’s Got Talent’ auditions. It was great to see the confidence of our students getting up on stage and giving it a go. Miss Dunstan and Mr Abella were not too shy to have the spotlight as well! Leo has also helped share some thoughts with me after camp and I wanted to share them with everyone:

The food was amazing

They also had a campfire where we could toast marshmallows

They had a team rescue competition to see who could complete the course with the dummy. The team with the least amount of points won. The students were a bit concerned that Miss Peters and Miss Bates were going to cheat to ensure that their teams would win

We had Barton’s Got Talent for some Grade 5/6’s, which was really epic. People acted and sang amazingly

We also had a dance night where boys and girls had to dance together. After that we danced solo and had lots of fun.

On Tuesday 6th August, our staff participated in a Curriculum Day. We took this opportunity to visit some other schools in our Curriculum teams consisting of our Maths, English, Digital Tech, Well-being, BELCH, Science and our Education Sup-port staff. Each teams focus was on their 2019 Action Plan. They each started to think about what their 2020 plans are going to look like. Each team then had an opportunity to present back to the rest of staff with observations and key evalua-tions.

Lastly, I would like to celebrate the Open Mornings we have had this week. The students were very engaged having their parents in the Learning Hubs. A big thank you to all the teachers for their extra time and preparation that was spent on these mornings to make them successful.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

GRADE 1 NEWS

The Grade 1 students have been enjoying learning Spanish! We have learnt some simple phrases, greetings, colours and numbers from 1-10 through stories and songs.

More recently, we have been read-ing a story about Teo the dinosaur. He is tengo hambre (very hungry). We have been learning about some foods he does and does not like.

Spanish: Teo dice tengo hambre.

English: Teo says I’m Hungry .

Spanish: Voy a comer.

English: I am going to eat.

Spanish: Voy a la cocina.

English: I am going to the kitchen.

The students loved the story of Teo. Ask your child to find out more about what happened to Teo!

GRADE 2 NEWS

This week in Grade 2 we have been learning about digital systems!

Students have been demonstrating skills to:

Explore, identify and experiment with hard-ware and software components

Use Safari to look for a photo and saving it on the camera roll to use in Adobe Spark

Transferring photos from the camera roll into Adobe Spark

Using materials to design and make their own hardware

We were also lucky enough to have family and friends visit us in our learning spaces on Thursday morning! Have a look at some of the photos.

GRADE 3 - 6 NEWS

Grade 3 Science

Last week the Grade 3’s discussed ‘momentum’ and ‘inertia’ in Science and we test-ed these concepts in a few games of tug of war. We discussed that the more momen-tum an object has, the harder it is to stop. As well as objects that have more mass require a larger initial force. Even Mrs Godenzi and Mrs Kelly tested this theory with some brave students.

Grade 3/4 Design Technology Inquiry

On Tuesday the Grade 3/4 students were very lucky to have the designers of the school come to chat to them about the planning and design process. Wayne and Cassia spoke about the rea-sons the school was designed the way it was and the process they go through when designing a school. The students then used this information to assist them with the inquiry topic this term; ‘Designing our Future’. During this topic the students will be planning and designing a new estate including the houses, roads, parks, schools and shopping centers.

Grade 5 Physical Science

The Grade 5 students have been investigating light as a source of energy. During their Open Morning this week students created shadow frames and inquired into transparent, translucent and opaque materials.

Lightning Premiership & Hoop Time

The Grade five and six students competed against other local schools in soccer, netball, newcombe and tee ball on Monday the 29th of July. Although we did not make any of the finals, the day was a lot of fun and all students were great representatives of Barton.

40 students also represented Barton at the Hoop Time competition where they played basketball against oth-er local schools. The Grade three and four students are looking forward to their turn later in the term.

Thank you to Miss Peters for all of her hard work organising the sporting events for the 5/6 students

Grade 5 and 6 Phillip Island Camp

From Tuesday 30/7 until Friday 2/8 the Grade 5 and 6 students attended camp at Phillip Island Adventure Resort. We participated in activities such as archery, camp cooking, canoeing, flying fox, giant swing, low

ropes course, ponding, raft making and a team rescue chal-lenge.

The teachers were extremely impressed at the respectful attitude all students demonstrated throughout the week and their determination to undertake new challenges.

Things to remember

Grade 4 Camp Rumbug payment and forms are due Friday 16th of August.

District Athletics forms are due on Friday 16th of August.

Reading logs are checked on a Thursday (3/4 classes) and Friday (5/6 classes). Students are expected to read and get their logs signed by a parent each week.

GRADE 5/6 SENIOR HOOP TIME

Wednesday 7th August, 2019

Congratulations to our 5/6 students who participated in the

Senior Hoop Time at Cranbourne Basketball Stadium, run by Basketball Victoria.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to represent Barton playing basketball against the other schools in our

Cranbourne South District. It was a tough day on the courts with our teams going up against some really strong teams, but every-one should be commended on the sportsmanship they showed

to all involved, and their demonstration of our school values.

Well done!

PERFORMING ART

What do you call a cow that can play a musical

instrument?

A moo-sician

There has been LOTS of learning in the last two weeks in Music!

Prep students had a great time using their bodies and voices to show the differ-ent ways that melodies and pitches can move! We drew different types of lines showing the pitch movement, and used our voices like a high pitched mouse, and a low

pitched lion’s roar.

Students in Year 1 & 2 are starting to learn about different melodic elements—this fortnight we’ve learned about accent marks (the exclamation mark of the mu-sical world), the treble clef, and the dynamics forte and piano. We learnt to play different dynamics on djembes, and clapped using accent marks, by emphasising particular beats.

Students in Year 3/4 have started learning the recorder! So far we’ve learnt the notes B, A and G, and we’ve learnt a few different songs, including Hot Cross Fun!, and we’ve even done some improvising.

Year 5/6 students are continuing on with their commercials and jingles. I can’t wait to hear about all of the wonderful things they did on camp at Phillip Island!

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES

In Prep we are learning about what a plant needs to survive before planting our own seeds and growing them this Term.

In Grade 1 we have worked with 3/4A students in a collaboration lesson learning about the plant life cycle, starting from seed and sprouting into a flowering plant.

In Grade 2 we have continued our ecosystem exploration by creating posters on each of the main ecosystems—terrestrial, fresh water and ocean.

In Grade 3/4 students have continued researching endangered or extinct native Australian animals. Students will present their reports to their classmates next week.

ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES

Ponding on Grade 5/6 camp

One of the activities on the Grade 5/6 Camp was ‘ponding’. The students trekked down to a man made pond with a floating pontoon and we were able to see a variety of aquatic animals up close.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to explore an ecosystem that is so intricate and delicate, particularly for the Grade 6 students who are working on their biodiversity projects.

We explored Smiths Beach rock pools where students found marine life including crabs and sea-weed.

One of our final stops on the way home was to the Nobbies, at the very edge of Phillip Island. The students were lucky to be able to see penguins hiding in their burrows and nesting boxes. Com-monly the little penguins, previously known as fairy penguins, waddle up the shore line at sunset

to the safety of their nesting boxes.

Book Week at Barton Primary School

We are so excited to let everybody know that Book Week this year is in Week 6 of this term, from the 19th—23rd of August. We will have a day during Book Week where students will be invited to dress up as a character from a story or book of their choice.

Book Week is run and organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) and it is a fun and exciting opportunity for our students (and other students across Australia) to celebrate books, and Australian authors and illustrators. The CBCA is a volunteer run organisation which presents annual awards to books for outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature, all with the aim of engaging our community with literature for young Australians. You might have seen books in book stores or libraries with bronze, silver or gold stickers on the front cover—this means they have won an award or honours from the CBCA!

At Barton Primary School this year, our students will participate in a range of activities in their classes and workshops, related to this year’s Book Week theme: reading is my secret power.

As part of our Book Week tradition at Barton, we are kindly asking that each family donates one book (picture or chapter) to our growing school library, for all of our students, current and future, to enjoy.

For more information about Book Week, or to see books that are shortlisted for this year’s awards, jump onto the CBCA website: www.cbca.org.au

Happy Reading!
