10.04.19 “Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The morning...was crisp and golden as an apple.” - J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Dear AHS Families, It’s FRIDAY and it’s GORGEOUS outside! There’s nothing quite like the first Fall Friday night when you can throw on a hoodie and some jeans and be comfortable outside with family and friends. And while there may be places around the world that are like this 365 days out of the year, I still love Cincinnati. Maybe it’s just me, but I absolutely LOVE the variation in the seasons. I get excited with each transition - summer to fall, fall to winter, winter to spring, spring to summer. Much like the seasons in Cincinnati, the rhythms of the school year are each beautiful, exciting and filled with their own traditions. As we put the final touches on the First Quarter next Friday, I am excited for the weeks and months ahead. This stretch of the school year includes the end of the Fall sports season and the beginning of the Winter season, the Senior Halloween Parade, the Bands of America Competition in Indy, the Fall Musical, Thanksgiving Break, Battle of the Bands...and maybe even a snow day or two! But before we get ahead of ourselves and look too far into the future, let’s just enjoy tonight and be thankful for the crisp air and the beautiful sunset. Have a GREAT weekend!! Rob P.S. The morning...was crisp and golden as an apple.” - J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

Dear AHS Families, It’s FRIDAY and it’s GORGEOUS outside! MOMENTS OF THE WEEK:

On Monday, our Girl’s Soccer team each selected a teacher who has impacted them in the

past year!!

GREAT things happening in Chemistry!! Lots of learning...and lots of smiling! :)

CONGRATS to Nick Tekulve and Abby Detering for being selected among 10 other HS

students in Cincinnati to participate in a 16-week black/white photography

This morning, while students were out of school, all of the AHS and THS teachers were at

Anderson in Professional Development (and check out the new AHS TIMELINE in the background!)

FROM THE DISTRICT: The Forest Hills Board of Education has placed a 4.7-mill operating levy on the November 2019 ballot. This levy is essential to provide necessary funding for classroom instruction including staff, textbooks, technology and supplies. The levy would cost $164.50 per $100,000 home market value. The district stretched the 2012 operating levy to last four years longer than promised to residents. Forest Hills also stretched its 2006 levy to last six years. This is not a spending issue; it’s a revenue issue. House Bill 920 prohibits inflationary increases on voted levies and the district is not exempt from inflationary increases. We would like to tell you more about the levy. Click here to read the most recent information. Are you registered to vote? The deadline to register is Monday, October 7. Visit here for more information and to register. Fact Friday: Did you know Wilson is celebrating its 60th year of excellence? When the first Wilson Elementary was built in 1959, it had six classrooms and about 160 students. It was dedicated on Sunday, November 8, 1959 in honor of Mr. Arthur Lawrence Wilson and his wife Lucy Williamson Wilson. Mr. Wilson was the Hamilton County School Superintendent from 1914-1921 and Assistant Superintendent of Schools from 1921-1953. Mrs. Wilson was also the founder of the Hamilton County Council of PTA. Today, Wilson has over 720 students. The “new” Wilson welcomed students in the fall of 2017.

PARENT TRANSPORTATION UPDATE: Please remember that parents dropping students off in the morning and picking up in the afternoon should do so only in the Parent loop on the south side of campus. No students should be dropped off before or after school at the Main Entrance or in the north parking lot. Lastly, especially as students are often ALL IN FOOD DRIVE: We need your help! PLEASE click HERE to learn more about how you can contribute to a great cause that culminates on Oct. 16 with our Freshman Day of Service. SAFETY UPDATE - INFORMATION ABOUT “TECIP”: When a child experiences a traumatic event, whether in school, in the community, or at home, many emotions follow. We know that many people can be impacted by these events, whether it be a well-publicized event or an event within a family. Sometimes knowing that there is a school-based response plan provides an additional sense of security. Along with our safety plans for fire, tornado, etc., Anderson also has a Traumatic Event Crisis Intervention Plan (TECIP™). This is a plan that can be implemented based on student needs and follows an explicit process. In partnership with COPES Consulting, Forest Hills developed school-level TECIP plans and a district response team, called a flight team, to support schools when needed. These plans were developed in 2009 and continue to be updated yearly. Why is this important? COPES Consulting shares: “Tragic events within the school community, such as an unexpected death, or a catastrophic disaster, have significant potential to not only adversely impact academic achievement, but also to inflict pain, turmoil, confusion, and heartache on both students and staff. The Traumatic Event Crisis Intervention Plan (TECIP ™), a program developed by the founders of COPES Consulting, has taught schools and districts how to develop sound aftermath crisis response plans, along with providing practical strategies and support materials in helping those impacted by the incident. TECIP is a field-tested model that is adaptable regardless of the size of the school or school district. Crisis intervention should be conducted by school staff BECAUSE children in crisis look to their school counselors, school psychologists, teachers, and administrators for protection and help.” The safety and well-being of all Forest Hills students is a top priority in our schools. If you have questions or would like more information, contact Emily Stanyard for more information. STUDENT FEES INFORMATION: As you may be aware, all Anderson High School students are charged a small general fee and many courses have additional fees for items like workbooks or supplies. OCTOBER 16 - o Grade 9 - All freshmen will travel to one of three locations (Matthew 25 Ministries,

Freestore Foodbank and Crayons to Computers) for half the day to participate in service learning. Students will go to. Locations will be determined by homerooms. The other half of the day will be spent in the gym organizing food for Interparish Food Pantry power packs from the food drive. Freshman were given a permission slip, but if you need one, click HERE and return permission slips to the Learning Commons or your son/daughter’s Social Studies teacher.

o Grade 10 - All students will take the PSAT as both a practice opportunity and also to assist with future course placement at Anderson. 10th graders are NOT eligible for the National Merit Scholarship program, nor are scores reported outside of AHS for 10th graders. 10th grade students will be released from school following the exam, which should be around 12:00. Afternoon bus transportation will be scheduled at the normal time.

o Grade 11 - Juniors registered for the PSAT will take that exam. All other Juniors will begin their day by reviewing their scores from the Sept. 24th Practice ACT, after which time they will be released into different groups and placed on an ACT-prep station rotation. Students will each receive some targeted instruction on each of the ACT exam sections (English, Reading, Math, and Science). Following this rotation, Juniors will be released early from school (around 11:00). Afternoon bus transportation will be scheduled at the normal time.

o Grade 12 - Seniors do not need to report to school on October 16. We encourage all seniors to engage in a College/Career Visitation Day. Students were provided a

Permission Slip on Thursday, Sept. 18, that should have been completed by parents and returned by today. Please check to ensure your son/daughter completed this and returned it so we can account for your son/daughter on this day.
