Who is ISTA?
A technical trade association formed in 1948 as the National Safe Transit Council (NSTC)
A Global leader in creating Pre-shipment Packaged-Product Testing Standards

Our Mission
To provide economic and environmental benefits by controlling product damage and over-packaging during the physical
distribution of products.

Voluntary Standards
• A process management standard for the design, testing and qualification of responsible packaging that meets industry, consumer and regulatory expectations.
• Developed by industry leaders and vetted by companies, NGO’s and government experts.

Standards
• Details the process and procedure for ISC Thermal Testing Laboratories to be certified to perform the design, testing, and validation of ISCs to be certified by ISTA as "ISTA 7E Certified" ISCs.
• Contains the new ISTA 7E Thermal Profiles that have been developed in a 3 year study of real shipping-lane data and have been independently statistically validated.

Procedures
There are currently 18 ISTA Testing Procedures, 3 Projects and 1 Standard covering different applications, package types, distribution modes, and products

• ISTA tests are organized into Series, based on cost/complexity and effectiveness Major categories are
• Non-Simulation Integrity • General Simulation • Focused Simulation
Combination categories • Partial Simulation • Enhanced Simulation
Member Performance Tests Package Development Tests
Procedures

• Simplest, lowest cost • In most basic form, require only
Drop tests Repetitive shock “vibration”
tests
Non-Simulation Integrity Tests - ISTA 1-Series

Effectiveness of Non-Simulation Tests ISTA estimates these tests have been
conducted over 500,000 times 60 year history of helping to prevent
damage in shipment But not simulations of the distribution
environment: “Not designed to simulate environmental occurrences” [ISTA “Guidelines”]
Non-Simulation Integrity Tests - ISTA 1-Series

Non-Simulation Integrity Tests - ISTA 1-Series
Procedure 1A: Packaged-Products weighing 68 kg or Less Basic Requirements: fixed displacement vibration and shock testing. Procedure 1B: Packaged-Products weighing Over 68 kg Basic Requirements: fixed displacement vibration and shock testing. Procedure 1C: Extended Testing for Individual Packaged-Products weighing 68 kg or Less Basic Requirements: fixed displacement or random vibration, shock testing and compression. Procedure 1D: Extended Testing for Individual Packaged-Products weighing Over 68 kg Basic Requirements: fixed displacement or random vibration, shock testing and compression.

Non-Simulation Integrity Tests - ISTA 1-Series
Procedure 1E: Unitized Loads Basic Requirements: vertical linear or random vibration and shock testing. Procedure 1G: Packaged-Products weighing 68 kg or Less (Random Vibration) Basic Requirements: random vibration and shock testing. Procedure 1H: Packaged-Products weighing Over 68 kg (Random Vibration) Basic Requirements: random vibration and shock testing.

Generalized test protocols which are much more complete
Tailors tests to different transport modes and situations
Covers all typical damage-producing hazards (shock, vibration, compression, atmospheric)
Puts the hazards in realistic sequence Generally simulates real-world intensities
and conditions
General Simulation Tests - ISTA 3-Series
16 © ISTA 2012
Requires greater range and sophistication of equipment, more test time
General Simulation Tests - ISTA 3-Series
17 © ISTA 2012
Effectiveness of General Simulation 20+ year history of helping to control both
packaging costs and transport damage Can be effective in “subtle” situations – hidden
damage, marginal designs, product fragility issues, etc.
Can be used to assess possible over-packaging
General Simulation Tests - ISTA 3-Series

General Simulation Tests - ISTA 3-Series
Procedure 3A: Packaged-Products for Parcel Delivery System Shipments 70kg or Less Test Procedure 3A is a general simulation test for individual packaged-products shipped through a parcel delivery system. Procedure 3B: Packaged-Products for Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Shipment Procedure 3B is a general simulation test for packaged-products shipped through a motor carrier (truck) delivery system. This type of shipment is called LTL (Less-Than-Truckload). Procedure 3E: Unitized Loads of Same Product Basic Requirements: atmospheric conditioning, compression, random vibration and shock testing.

General Simulation Tests - ISTA 3-Series
Procedure 3F: Packaged Products for Distribution Center to Retail Outlet Shipment 45 kg Basic Requirements: atmospheric conditioning, compression, random vibration and shock testing. Procedure 3H: Performance Test for Products or Packaged-Products in Mechanically Handled Bulk Transport Containers Basic Requirements: atmospheric conditioning, random vibration and shock testing. . Project 3K: Fast Moving Consumer Goods for the European Retail Supply Chain Project 3K is a general simulation test for fast moving packaged consumer products shipped through the multiple-retail supply chain environment in Europe.

Partial Simulation, ISTA 2-Series Non-Simulation tests, plus one or more General Simulation
elements
Combination Tests - ISTA 2-Series
Procedure 2A: Packaged-Products weighing 68 kg or Less Basic Requirements: atmospheric conditioning, compression, fixed displacement or random vibration and shock testing. Procedure 2B: Packaged-Products weighing over 68 kg Basic Requirements: atmospheric conditioning, compression, fixed displacement or random vibration and shock testing. Procedure 2C: Furniture Packages Basic Requirements: atmospheric conditioning, compression and shock testing.

Enhanced Simulation – ISTA Project 4AB • A web-based test plan generator
Define the product and package Define the Distribution Sequence Supply details regarding handling, transportation, and
storage A complete Test Plan is then generated
