Actions/Guiding Activity

As a team you will be completing three guiding activities:

1)Important Inventors and Inventions2)Who invented what?!?!3)The Invention Today

Page 7: Inventors and their Inventions. The BIG Idea Inventors/Innovators both past and Present Invented the telephone Steven Sasson Created the first digital

Guiding Activity 1

Important Inventors and Inventions Guiding Questions:

What items could you not live without and why are these items important to you?

What would be different today without this invention?

This guiding activity will be an introduction to the project. Students will initially work independently, before their groups are decided and created.

E.Q. Why are Thomas Edison’s, Ben Franklin’s, and Alexander Graham Bell inventions an important donation to society?

Guiding Activity 1 (continued)

Use the following website to discover who the inventors were of your times. Record that in the third column: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/inventors/

Now use this site to add 5 more inventions.

Finally, use glogster (link below) and follow the directions to complete the next step.

Then create your own glogster to answer the guiding questions.

Guiding Activity 2

Who invented what?! Guiding Questions:

What made your inventor famous? How did the invention change our lives?

After completing the introduction you have a good feeling of whom inventors are, what inventions they may have created. We are now going to take that piece to the next level. You will complete research as a group, but independently type your final paper for this activity.

Example/Solution

Inventor Research

Student Name: Daniel, Jess, Lindsay

Inventor’s Name: Thomas Edison Date of Birth: February 11, 1847

The early life and education of your inventor: Thomas Edison was born in Ohio. He was born in the city of Milan. When he was in school he went to a one room school house. There was one teacher for 39 students. He asked a great deal of questions and like to learn. Thomas was eventually home-schooled by his mother. He enjoyed teaching himself new things the most. He spent a great deal of time in the library. He lost his hearing.

What is their most important work/invention?

Inventions: phonograph, Edison Motion Picture, light bulb

The most important invention that Thomas Edison invented was the light bulb. Although the idea was tried by many other people, Edison was the first to make it practical for people in their houses.

In what year was that invented? 1879

List any interesting facts about the inventor/invention: Edison held 1,093 patents for inventions. Although he was well known for his successes, Edison failed a few times with invention ideas as well. He formed the Edison Portland Cement Co. and his company was hired to build the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. His greatest failure was when it came to create a sensible way to mine iron ore.

How did their particular invention change our life? Did it make life easier? Edison’s invention of the light bulb helped many people in different ways. People no longer had to rely on daylight or oil lamps. Light bulbs allowed people to have light in their homes during the night. This also made the work force independent and they could work around the clock if need be. People could be more productive 24 hours a day instead of either when the sun was out, or by burning oil lamps. Light bulbs definitely made life easier for everyone of all ages.

Guiding Activity 2 (continued)

As you write your research paper with your group please use the following guidelines:

(Paragraph 1) Should include your answers to: What was life like for your inventor? Do you know any information about their education or childhood? What are any interesting facts you found out about your inventor?

(Paragraph 2) Should include your answers to: What was your inventor famous for? What was their invention they created? What year did they create it?

(Paragraph 3) Should include your answer to: How has this invention changed our lives? What did it make easier or harder to do?

Example/Solution

Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. When he was seven he was learning in a one-room schoolhouse. Thomas spent 12 weeks in class with 38 other students, at 11 different ages, and one teacher. Thomas was a very eager student and constantly asked his teacher questions. His teacher was often overwhelmed by the amount of students, ages, and different levels. Thomas’s mother realized this and soon withdrew him from school to begin to “home-teach” Thomas. His parent’s exposed him to many different types of literature and learning. Thomas quickly grew to prefer independent self-instruction. He did this by using resources at a library. An interesting fact about Thomas was he became totally deaf in his left ear and about 80 percent deaf in his right. He was a remarkably intelligent person who contributed some great inventions to society. Thomas Edison had many great inventions throughout his life. His first greatest invention was the phonograph. Thomas Edison was trying to tweak the telegraph when he accidentally invented the phonograph. Thomas Edison also created the Edison Motion Pictures. Edison thought “the Edison Motion Pictures is to the eye what the phonograph does for the ear.” Although there are many different inventions the most famous one he is known for is the light bulb. The light bulb was created in 1879. Although the idea was not a new one, Edison found a way to make I practical for people in their houses.

Now prepare a brief slide show presentation via power point to inform your peers about your inventor, their inventions, and unique facts about them.

See example Thomas Edison PowerPoint on the wiki page for a solution

Guiding Activity 3

The Invention Today Guiding Questions:

How do we use this invention today? Are there any other inventions that are created because of this

invention?

You should have learned about your inventor and how an invention has changed the way we live. We are now going to dig deeper and explain how your invention is used today, and if any other inventions were designed because of it. As a team you will need to decide on one of the inventions to use for this part of the project.

Page 18: Inventors and their Inventions. The BIG Idea Inventors/Innovators both past and Present Invented the telephone Steven Sasson Created the first digital

Guiding Activity 3 (continued)

As a group click on the link below: http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/graphic/ma

inideamap.html You only need one map per group!

Fill in this map starting with the main idea with the invention that your team has decided to focus on.

Next you can fill in the three idea bubbles with two more ways the invention is used today and use the third bubble to fill in any idea of inventions that were created because of it.

Page 19: Inventors and their Inventions. The BIG Idea Inventors/Innovators both past and Present Invented the telephone Steven Sasson Created the first digital

Guiding Activity 3 (continued)

Watch the following short video on the telephone to give you some ideas of how communication has changed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dm1-N9UVG7s&N

R=1

Use a browser such as Google to research your invention.

Find information and be sure to write what you find on the map.

Guiding Activity 3 (continued)

Now as a group create a poster showcasing the invention you researched. You must include the following: The information you included on your main idea map At least 2 pictures of the invention One drawing to show the invention in use If you are able, include a photo of each person with the invention Provide captions with the pictures Provide a picture of the invention that was created because of

your original invention. Use this rubric to guide your work:
