Please accept this as your invitation to our Big Gully Farm Bull Sale on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the farm beginning at 5:00 p.m. MST, a half hour earlier than past years. We would love to host you, along with your family and friends, for supper and drinks at this pre-Christmas event. We must start by expressing our gratitude to those who have invested and greatly supported us with their previous purchases, particularly last year with a volatile and soft feeder market leading up to a miserably cold sale day. We are appreciative and proud of the repeat and local support that has been afforded us.

This group of long-yearling bulls are consistent in regards to muscle, balance, structural integrity, maternal quality and pigmentation. Though we don’t make this assertion annually, we do believe our 2017-born bulls are truly exciting, with phenotypic quality, breeding versatility and strong multi-trait genetic profiles.

As in years past, Shari will broadcast the sale online at www.LiveAuctions.tv simultaneously with the live sale, beginning at 5:00 p.m. MST. However, unlike previous years, no pre-bidding will occur prior to the sale. If intending to view online, please register for a buyer number several days in advance to allow yourself a relaxed evening during the sale. 2017 is the first year we will forego selling registered females, a move intended to expand and bolster the maternal strength of our cowherd by retaining every purebred female and applying selection pressure based on their initial production. For 2018, we anticipate offering modest numbers of commercial open heifers, both Hereford x Angus and Simmental x Hereford.

As the number of breeds with a major influence has diminished, and in many cases breed dif-ferences are becoming less striking, we do believe Herefords have maintained a unique position to provide the commercial cowherd with as much benefit as ever before. Their superior docility, feed efficiency, hardiness, structural longevity and low input characteristics, united with advanc-es in udder quality, pigmentation, muscle and frame moderation provide the ideal balance to most other breeds in a crossbreeding scenario. I would ask, “Are you utilizing heterosis or hybrid vigour to its full potential in a planned crossbreeding system?”

No matter which breeds are involved, in our opinion there are both economic and production benefits to using complimentary breeds. One of the most impressive images a commercial pro-ducer can convey is a pasture of cattle with near identical color, breed influence, body type and calf appearance due to a consistent, regimented crossbreeding system. Though it may raise eye-brows, a true strength of Hereford is not being extreme or excessive in terms of output for many traits, thereby providing the ideal foundation to establish optimum expression of traits when mated to virtually any other breed. In the profit equation, producers often do an exceptional job measuring output, but rarely are inputs and cow maintenance costs scrutinized as harshly. If they were, Herefords would factor favourably in building a low-input maternal base that could be mated to terminal or high-performance sires to optimize output in feeder progeny.

In striving to attract progressive commercial operations to consider our genetics, we hope to establish a particular perception and image that we intend to be synonymous with Big Gully Farm. Bulls from Big Gully Farm should be expected to share several criteria, including:

a) Being docile, sound, muscular, big bodied and attractive.b) Sires sourced from breeders of high-quality cattle, but more importantly, operations withintegrity, professionalism, humility and talent that derive their living from cattle production.c) Dams with high quality udders, desirable body capacity/muscle, structural integrity, youthful-ness and maternal character.d) Strong multi-trait EPD profiles.e) Genomically-Enhanced EPDs provide greater confidence in genetic merit at a young age.f ) Ultrasound carcass data collected and applied in selection on bulls and replacement females.g) Parentage verificiation, genetic-abnormality-free status and horned/polled status on each bull.h) Records of calving ease; birth, weaning and yearling weights; scrotal; mature cow weight; ud-der scores; ultrasound backfat, ribeye and intramuscular fat for each eligible animal in the herd.

Welcome

As proponents of expected progeny differences, we have put considerable selection pressure on these for generations. Obviously, EPDs are a tool; therefore we utilize them and feel competitive from a data standpoint. All sale cattle have been parentage verified and offer low-density GE-EPDs. For those unfamiliar, this testing allows a higher degree of accuracy in knowing the true genetic merit of the cattle at a younger age for a variety of traits – essentially a risk management plan. If you are unfamiliar with either of these tools or their utility, we would gladly discuss them prior to the sale. Every year we submit calving ease, weights (birth, weaning, yearling, mature cow), scrotal, udder score and carcass ultrasound measures (ribeye, back fat, intramuscular fat) on each eligible animal to the Canadian Here-ford Association. The bottom line is we believe selection applied to these traits will improve the profitability of the progeny born to bulls we raise in an array of production scenarios.

Free of charge, all bulls will be developed here at the farm through till next spring, double vaccinat-ed with Fusogard, calves ultrasounded for carcass merit by Shari, evaluated for breeding soundness and delivered when best suits the buyer. We know that unforeseen circumstances potentially arise with semen testing and breeding. As a precaution, the bulls have been scrotal measured by the local veterinarian to assure satisfactory development. However, if a concern after spring breeding soundness evaluations or during actual breeding arises, our intent is to be honest and straight forward with you and we expect the same in terms of finding a satisfactory resolution. Rest assured, we have spare 2-year-olds, a large assortment of bull calves, and potentially our herd sires available for you to utilize should a current or past purchase prove concerning. We prefer finding a pleasing substitute bull or reimbursing your money and avoid issuing sale credit.

No matter if you are interested or just curious about the offering, we would encourage you to at least take a look and see if the type of Hereford cattle we enjoy producing may work for you! If we can be of any assistance prior to the sale, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,Lance & Shari LeachmanFrances Leachman

A dark, red eyed, short marked, hairy younger yearling bull sired by Great Divide 102.

Laramie is built very correct at the ground and is attractive in his balance from the profile. He

is smooth shouldered, big ribbed, straight lined, square hipped and sound in his movement.

His Bounty Hunter 611 dam was a moderate framed, high quality uddered female with a son

at Perry Powell’s.

Lot 2Calves are dehorned at birth and vaccinated two weeks prior to weaning.

Sandpoint, a heifer’s first calf, possesses the lowest birth weight of the yearling bulls. He has always been a big ribbed, straight lined bull with attractive balance from the profile. Plus, he is red eyed, big testicled and wide based. His paternal half-sisters have proven exceptional in regards to udder quality, calving ease and milking capability. Sandpoint could certainly be an option on heifers, while providing the versatility to diminish birth weight on a set of cows.

Gilette is a complete sire prospect that combines muscle, center body dimension and performance. The Great Divides are powerful, growth oriented

and have plenty of hair-this bull follows that pattern. Gilette shares the same deep flanked,

bold ribbed characteristics that made his mother an easy fleshing female that easily maintained her body condition during production. We anticipate

he could be mated to a variety of cow types due to his completeness and versatile genetic profile.

A maternal half-brother is at Franklin Cattle Co. and maternal half-sister is at Wood B Herefords.

Lot 3

Maidstone is a conservative framed son of a bull purchased by Travis & Charity Cooke a couple years ago. That bull, Full Thrust, was used post-AI on a group of heifers due to his pigmentation, center body dimension and complete phenotype. Maidstone is dark red, deep bodied and measured among the largest ribeye we have had on a yearling bull. His dam, a first-calf heifer, is a 2011 daughter with a tight udder that appears to milk well.

Pinehurst was born at a conservative 83 lb and his physical build suggests calving ease with his smooth shoulder, conservative frame and

ideal balance. Plus, he is fully pigmented, level designed and correct in his structure. His first calf

dam, a Cruz daughter, is an ideal young female considering her udder quality, youthfulness,

structure and center body dimension.

Lot 6Dams are udder scored at calving and electronically weighed each fall at weaning.

North Fork is red eyed, short marked, attractively designed 2011 son that should excel maternally. We would expect him to calve easier than his actual birthweight suggests based on his smooth shoulder, paternal influence and overall build. His 611 dam tends to add shape and body dimension, while maintaining moderate frame in her progeny. North Fork could be utilized to enhance pigment, balance, structural integrity, milk and udder quality to a set of females.

Physically, Parker is the largest statured and longest sided yearling bull. We

implemented his sire, 4061 to incorporate extra performance, bone and scale, which

he has certainly done. Parker is short marked, big testicled, long sided and high performing. His dam, a middle

aged Vendetta daughter, has been very productive on her initial trio of calves with

another stout son, 181E, selling as lot 16.

Lot 7

An alert, long bodied, dark red son of 2011. Holbrook is sound structured, straight lined and smooth fronted. The true value of his sire, 2011, has been realized through the production of his daughters. They are excellent uddered, milk well and wean heavy calves in relation to their conservative frame. Holbrook’s dam was a big, stout, high-performing Bounty Hunter 611 daughter with a son working for Franklin Cattle Co.

Lot 8Docility is readily apparent in the cattle. Cattle are our passion and lone concentration.

With much of this catalogue dedicated to bulls, we wanted to inform you on developments within the cowherd as well. We’ve withdrawn from showing and selling purebred females to bolster our depth and numbers by providing each heifer the opportunity to prove her production value on a first calf. Moreover, we want to keep our females unique, maintain contemporary group size and make our bulls the sole means of accessing the maternal factories behind them. We intend to keep extending our inclusion of polled bulls in breeding scenarios to accommodate more marketing flexibility, including a more prominent group for this sale. This year we again removed 40 females to introduce an exciting group of bred heifers. We believe strongly in maintaining a youthful, productive cowherd that should genetically advance itself rapidly, therefor the average age of females to calve in the winter of 2018 will be 4.36 years. Our few Angus and Angus-influenced females will continue to serve as a quality benchmark, while being utilized as ET recipients or for the production of F1s. The cowherd has reached the point where udder quality, foot structure, muscle, body dimension and docility are correct, but will certainly continue to be advanced. All replacement heifers are synchronized and AI bred, while 70% of the cows are AI bred on natural heats, the majority to our own walking sires. The embryo transfer component of our program continues to propagate offspring from a few select females. Though chances to publicly view the females may be less apparent, we encourage you to stop by any time or attend our Labor Day weekend Appreciation Event to see what we have been working toward!

Leverage is a conservative marked, high performing son of 5001, a sire we are very

excited about for his skeletal quality, maternal strength and exceptional pedigree. We think

the physical build, genetic profile and females that support him on both sides provides a

unique breeding tool. We really like his 2011 mother, whose udder quality, structure and

youthfulness mirror our breeding objectives.

Retribution, a heifer’s first calf, has been one of my favourites in regard to his skeletal

quality. He is so level designed, long sided and attractive in the configuration of his

hind leg. From a data standpoint, he offers a great deal of breeding versatility, especially

considering his 80 lb birthweight. His Stockman-sired dam is a modest framed

heifer with a tidy udder.

Lot 10

Salvation may be most similar to his sire Catapult in terms of phenotype as any of his brothers. They share the same thick ended, bold ribbed, deep sided look. Salvation has plenty of mass and dimension, yet still remains clean and flexible in his joints with a neat look from the profile. His dam is a highly regarded within our herd for her production record, udder quality and attractive look-having produced two sons for Hillsvale Colony.

Revenant is a dark red, short marked embryo transfer son of the highly influential Hometown 10Y. This calf is long sided, sound structured, straight lined and attractive in his build. “10Y” is known for transmitting superior rib shape, muscle, balance and superior genetic predictions. Revenant will likely have more extension and scale than many paternal sibs due to the influence of his 611 dam. Her added length, scale and performance complimented this ET mating.

Blacklist, another heifer’s first calf, is the second 5001 son in the offering and has always been intriguing factoring his dark red color, mid rib shape and strong first calf mother. Our initial calf crop from 5001 has reinforced the skeletal quality, extension, and depth that we anticipated. We can’t wait for his first daughters to calve in 2019. Blacklist came out at a conservative 83 lb and could likely be utilized on heifers. His mother is a big, long, deep sided Vendetta daughter that appeared to milk well on her initial calf.

On Point is a bold ribbed, deep sided, big testicled, attractively designed calf that is red eyed and built sound at the ground. Videos of the sale lots can be viewed at www.biggullyfarm.com.HOW TO PARTICIPATE In order to participate in the auction online you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. Go to the LiveAuctions.tv website, www.liveauctions.tv, and select Big Gully Farm Bull Sale (you may need to create a user name and password if this is your first time). After logging in select the link that says, “register for a buyer number.” This form requires you to fill out your bank’s name, city, state, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous. HOW THE AUCTION WORKS Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If you click on a lot, the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out.” No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable.

WHAT IS A PROXY BID? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen, no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT.” But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid.
