The Howard Miller Family: Where Did We Come From?

By Steve M. Miller

Every story has to have a begining. Ours will start in Halifax County, Virginia, in1769. In that year, a man named William Roberts executed a deed of trust to his son,Samual Roberts and his son-in-law, Haman Miller. These two individuals went his bondso William could purchase some merchandise from Cunningham and Company inGlasgow, Scotland (1). William Roberts' note coming due and the beginning of hostilitieswith England happened to coincide. William did not pay the note, thinking that all debtsdue English allies were cancelled once war began.

In 1779 or 1780, William Roberts and his family moved from Halifax County,Virginia to Randolph County, North Carolina. Among the family members were his son-in-law Haman Miller and his daughter (Haman's wife), Frances Roberts Miller. Randolphhad just recently been formed from the southern portion of Guilford County in 1779.Book I of Randolph County Real Estate Conveyances, shows that Haman Millerpurchased 200 acres of land from Godfrey Ridge In the Jackson Creek area on October7,1780. Haman paid Mr. Ridge 300 pounds. Randolph County records show that Hamanhad quite an appetite for land, purchasing 3034 acres between 1780 and 1809.

William Roberts died sometime between 1785 and 1787. In 1795, the state ofNorth Carolina ruled that debts due England and her allies were collectable(2). Therefore, the son-in-law Haman Miller and William's son Samuel had to pay the 1769 note.Interestingly, the Virginia Court in Halifax County, on October 27,1788 ruled that JamesRoberts, another brother-in-law to Haman, and Sarah Roberts, the mother-in-law toHaman were to pay Haman, the sum of Seventy Pounds Twelve Shillings and Eight PenceHalf Penny...(3). Why Haman brought a suit against these two relatives is not really clear. With William Roberts having just recently died however, it can be guessed that it hadsomething to do with the settlement of his estate.

From Haman's will we know several things about him. For one thing he called hiswife by the nickname, Fanny. This was a very common nickname for Frances in thosedays. We also find in his will the name of his children:

Peter Patty, who married Archibald Fuller Sally, who married Henry Farlow Wade Jacob James Thomas

Haman willed several slaves to his children and wife. The 1790 census confirmsthat Haman did indeed own 17 slaves that worked what he called his, plantation. Hamanrefers to himself in his will as, being very sick and weak in body but of sound and perfectmind... He wrote his will on July 12, 1814 and his death was noted in an October 28,

Page 11: [ HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA ]millerworld.x10host.com/JFMTEMP/miscell.pdf · John Boyd 1331 0 27 James Turner 424 0 27 ... William Sims 0 3 63 David Haley 167 1 64. Thomas Spragins

1814 edition of a Raleigh newspaper. He therefore, obviously died sometime betweenJuly and October of 1814. His will was filed during the November, term of court inRandolph by the executors, James Miller and Haman Miller, both his sons.

A Raleigh newspaper noted that Haman Miller, died in the 77th year of his age...(4) , and that he was, a patriot in the American Revolution (5). His age indicates that hewould have been born in 1737. The reference to his being a patriot indicates that while hestill resided in Virginia

12-08-92 Page 1

he fought in the Continental Army.It is known from a card catalog file of cemeterylists in the Randolph Room of the Asheboro/Randolph Public Library, that Haman wasburied in the Miller Family Cemetery in Jackson Creek. So far, the cemetery has not beenlocated.

As noted in his will The Haman Miller that died in 1814, had a son named Haman. Not as much is known about this second Haman as the first. He was one of the executorsof his father's will. It is also known from court records that he served jury duty not longafter his father's death. It is not clear what the trial was about, however, the defendant wasfound, not guilty.

We can safely.assume that the second Haman was born in Virginia since he wouldhave been born around 1766, which was several years before the family moved to NorthCarolina. In the first Haman's will he refers to his daughter-in-law as Frankey. However,in an 1809,land transaction, she is refered to as Elizabeth (6). The 1810 census shows noother Haman Millers living in Randolph County. Therefore, the descrepencies in thename of the second Haman's wife can only mean that he was married twice or his wife'sname contained both the names Frances (Frankey) and Elizabeth.

Haman and Frankey had eight children according to the 1810 census. Three whitemales between the ages of 10 and 16; 2 white males 16 to 26; 1 white male 26 to 35; 1white female 10 to 16; and one white female 26 to 35. Only the name of the head of thehousehold was listed in the national census until 1850. Because of this oddity of thecensus plus the fact that this Haman did not leave a will, makes the names of the childrenhard to know. One son, Thomas is known because he is mentioned in his grandfather'swill (the first Haman). More than likely Thomas was the eldest or at least the eldest son.Another son of Haman and Frankey is a third Haman. We can be sure of this for a coupleof reasons. First, when the second Haman's property was being sold from his estatefollowing his death in 1838, another Haman Miller bought a considerable amount of thatproperty. The 1830 census shows only two Haman Miller's living in Randolph County.Second, with the families of that era making a habit of carrying a name from generationto generation, it would be unlikely that this third Haman would have been from anotherMiller family.

The second Haman lived in Jackson Creek like his father before him. His death wasrecorded in the September 10, 1838 edition of The Southern Citizen an Asheboro, NC

Page 12: [ HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA ]millerworld.x10host.com/JFMTEMP/miscell.pdf · John Boyd 1331 0 27 James Turner 424 0 27 ... William Sims 0 3 63 David Haley 167 1 64. Thomas Spragins

newspaper of the time. The article said he was 72 years old and died of dropsey. SinceHaman did not leave a will, his property, including 13 slaves were sold to settle his estate.

The third Haman was born in 1802 in Randolph County. He would be the first inthe direct family line to be born in Randolph. This Haman married Patsy (Martha)Williams on August 22, 1826 (7). Patsy was born around 1808. Thankfully, this Hamanleft a will, so we know the names of all of his children. Plus, all of his children are listedin the 1850 census, the first to list family names and ages.

Haman buys quite a bit of his father's property upon his father's death in 1838.According to the 1850 census, Haman age 48 and Martha (Patsy) age 42 had elevenchildren:

Melinda Marsh Louise Haman (Harrison) Daniel Martha Mary Nancy Eliza J. Jesse G. Angeline

The Angeline listed was less than a year old in the 1850 census. She was actuallythe second Angeline born to Haman and Patsy. Interestingly, The Randolph Herald has anarticle listing the death of, Angeline, the daughter of Haman Miller, in their September29,1846 edition. This would have been the first Angeline. When Haman wrote his will onJune 28,1852, he did not mention the second daughter they named Angeline, indicatingthat she too died. Outside of his marriage, census records and his will, not much is knownabout the third Haman. He obviously did not own slaves like his namesakes before himbecause he made no mention of them in his will. We also do not know anything about hisdeath other than to say he must have died rather young at the age of 56. His will wasrecorded in the November term of court 1858.

Quite a lot is known about William Marsh Miller the eldest son of Haman andPatsy Miller. He was born in Randolph County on September 11,1830. He married MaryAnn Hill on January 5, 1854 (8).Marsh and Mary Ann had two children live to see adulthood. Their oldest was BenjaminFrank and their youngest was a daughter named Angeline. Angeline would eventuallymarry John Jarrell of Randolph County in 1881.

Marsh was a Randolph County farmer but still managed to live quite a colorful life.On November 7, 1862 Marsh was conscripted (drafted) into the Confederate States Army,

Page 13: [ HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA ]millerworld.x10host.com/JFMTEMP/miscell.pdf · John Boyd 1331 0 27 James Turner 424 0 27 ... William Sims 0 3 63 David Haley 167 1 64. Thomas Spragins

enlisting in Wake County at age 32, (9) . As happened often with conscripted soldiers,Marsh deserted prior to March 1, 1863 (10) . Marsh surrendered to the Randolph CountySheriff and returned to his unit on September 20, 1864 (11) . About 2 months later onDecember 28, 1864, Marsh deserted again, but this time to Union forces, probably theArmy of The Potomac. The US Army confined him somewhere in Washington, DC onJanuary 4,1865. Marsh was released shortly thereafter upon taking the Oath of Allegiance(12).

This kind of fortune followed Marsh after the war as well. On May 10, 1868 he wasdeclared bankrupt. This was authorized by Judge Charles Hibbard in the District Court ofThe US for The Pamlico District of North Carolina. It is not exactly clear what broughtabout this turn of events. However, Marsh was ordered to turn over to Rubin F.Trogdon, the property of his estate (13) . This would seem to indicate that Mr. Trogdon may haveheld a sizable note for Marsh, which for whatever reason, Marsh coud not repay. True toform however, Marsh obviously landed on his feet because the 1880 census shows aservent living with the Marsh Miller family.

William Marsh Miller died April 17,1908 at the age of 78. That means he lived longenough to have seen and possibly even held his great-grandson, Howard Milton Miller, who was born January 23,1908.

Mary Ann Hill Miller died June 14,1915. That means that her great-grandsonHoward could have possibly retained memories of her since he would have been 7 yearsold when she died. Although it is not known exactly why, Mary Ann spent the last 30years of her life blind.

William Marsh and Mary Ann are buried in the Mount Shepherd Primative BaptistChurch Cemetery, just off of Highway 64 West going out of Asheboro, NC.

Next in line is the eldest child of Marsh and Mary Ann, Benjamin Frank Miller.Frank was born March 15, 1856. He married Frances (Fanny) Briles February 7, 1877.Frank and Fanny lived part of their life in the Jackson Creek and Farmer area of RandolphCounty. However, it is in Asheboro where Frank will be best remembered. Miller Street, which runs beside present-day Asheboro Nissan and the Randolph Hospital parking lotwas named for Frank and family. Until just a few short years ago, the old two story framestructure where they lived, still stood.

Verbal recollections of Frank related by Edgar Cheek indicate that he was a short(maybe in the area of 5'4") and fiesty man. Among things that are known about them,Frank and Fanny had eight children:

Harris Herbert Riley Charles Wesley

Page 14: [ HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA ]millerworld.x10host.com/JFMTEMP/miscell.pdf · John Boyd 1331 0 27 James Turner 424 0 27 ... William Sims 0 3 63 David Haley 167 1 64. Thomas Spragins

Forrest Alma Purvis Moleta Costos Mozelle Cox

Other than what is already related, not much is known about Frank at this timeother than to say he did seem to own quite a bit of land. He purchased a little over 600acres of land between 1881 and 1885 (15).

Benjamin Frank Miller and Frances (Fanny) Briles Miller are both buried in theOld Asheboro Cemetery in downtown Asheboro. Frank died of a cerebrial hemmorage onMarch 23,1932. Fanny died June 26,1940.

William Harris Miller was born to Frank and Fanny on August 13,1885 inRandolph County. He was known as Harris. He married Effie Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hill,March 30,1907. Harris and Lizzie had five children:

Howard Milton Albert Vernon (Called Vernon) John Nathan (Died 5 months of age, 1909) Mary Parrish

12-08-92 Page 4

Harris was a farmer but at sometime in his life worked in the old wheelbarrow factory inAsheboro, according to Hazel Miller his daughter-in-law. As related by Edgar Cheek,Harris was so much the dedicated Republican that he had a portrait of Calvin Coolidgehanging on the wall of his den. It is known from Harris'death certificate that Dr. CCHubbard started treating him for a carbuncle on his back in July of 1936. According to thedeath certificate that Dr. Hubbard filled out, Harris died from the infection brought on bythe carbuncle on November 23, 1936. He was only 51 years old.

Lizzie on the other hand lived to the ripe old age of 78. She died in 1957 after yearsof chewin tobacco and smoking cigars. Harris and Lizzie along with their infant sonNathan, are buried at The Mount Shepherd Primative Baptist Church Cemetery.

Howard Milton Miller, the oldest child born to Harris and Effie Elizabeth was bornJanuary 23, 1908 in Randolph County. It is believed that he dropped out of school in thefifth grade. Even so, he managed to teach himself Algebra and Electrical Engineeringamong other subjects. He married Hazel Elizabeth Davis of Montgomery County on July13,1927.

Howard and Hazel had eight children, seven of which lived to maturity:

Zelma (married Edsel Reed)Harold Lloyd (Died at 14 months of age in 1931)

Howard's experience in the job market was varied. He was an auto mechanic duringthe depression; a welder in the shipyards of Newport News, Virginia during the SecondWorld War, and following the war he helped bring Asheboro radio station WGWR on theair as an engineer. He also had a radio and television repair shop at home during the1950's and 1960's. When Howard died he was chief engineer at the radio station. He isburied at White Oak Springs Primative Baptist Church Cemetery. He was 57 years old.

Hazel Miller was employed by Asheboro Hosiery Mill during most of the 1930's.She worked for the Acme McCrary Corp. for a time before going to work at Mid-StatePaper Box. Sometime during the early 1950's Hazel started staying home. She stayed athome with the children until Howard died in 1965. Following Howard's death Hazelstarted working for the Asheboro City School system in the cafeteria.

Howard and Hazel had 17 grandchildren, a lot of which Howard never knew:

A lot of the grandchildren have had children of their own. So the history of the HowardMiller family is still being made.
