Hinduism has never developed a formal hierarchy such as that found in Roman Catholicism or Shi’a

Islam.

Salvation/ Damnation

Some Hindus describe something known as Antarloka,

or ‘in-between realm’. For those who have died, it is a temporary place for souls

suffering from the effects of bad karma or for those

approaching liberation where one can acquire knowledge that will help them in the next life.

Those who have achieved Moksha reside in the highest

level of Antarloka.

Hindus are not required to go on pilgrimages, however many do.

The reason is due to the fact that most Hindus believe their sins will be washed away

if they bathe in one of India’s holy rivers.

A popular time to do this is during a religious festival held once every 12 years known as

the Maha Kumbh Mela.
