Community Connections 18th Annual International Festival – 国際 E

KOKUSAI

AAEフェスタ E

FESTA

By Andrew Dempster – Nov. 2017

Autumn is finally here and with it has come an air of excitement in the International

Relations and Cooperation Division at the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation as plans for the International Festival start coming together. Sunday the 19P

thP of November sees the 18P

thP

Annual International Festival. Dedicated to the city’s links with countries and cultures from around the world, the International Festival will be held from 10am in and around the International Conference Centre Hiroshima (ICCH), in the Peace Memorial Park.

My name is Andrew Dempster, the newly appointed Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) at the City Hall and the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation. This will be my first year participating in the International Festival; hopefully the first of many! I will be staffing my own stall dedicated to Scottish tartan where you can find out all about traditional Scottish attire and have a go at designing your own tartan! However this is just a taste of what the festival has to offer: from traditional Chinese paper crafts to a seminar on an eco-tour to the Galapagos, the International Festival showcases the work done by internationally focused volunteer groups and corporations.

With food stalls featuring dishes from around the world on the green belt in front of the ICCH, an International Bazaar, and outdoor stage performances, the festival has something for everyone. For some events, such as ikebana (flower arranging), kimono wearing, and the English tour guide seminar, reservations are required in advance, so if you’re interested give the International Relations and Cooperation Division a call on 082-242-8879 or send them an email at [email protected] to reserve your place!

There is also a ton of information available for foreign residents, and if you find yourself in need of advice about life in Japan, visas, child rearing and so on there is a free consultation service.

Last but not least, don’t forget to sign the Petition Drive for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons!

The International Exchange Lounge collects used stamps to assist international cooperation activities.

Through the volunteer groups, JOCS*, the collected stamps are sold to collectors to raise money. With the profit, items such as milk and medicine are purchased and doctors as well as nurses are dispatched throughout Asia and other continents. We also collects PET bottle caps in order to support the “Ecocap Action”. The sales profits obtained by recycling caps are donated to the Japan Committee “Vaccines for the World’s Children” (JCV).

*JOCS: Japan Overseas Christian Medical Cooperative Service HOW TO COLLECT: © Stamps ð When you cut stamps from envelopes, please leave 5 mm of paper around them. It is not necessary

to remove them from the envelope. Torn or folded stamps cannot be accepted. © PET Bottle Caps ð Only PET bottle caps for drinks or mineral water are accepted. Please wash the caps and

tear off the sticker if it has one. This is in order to avoid damaging the recycling machines. Things such as metal caps and pull-top tabs cannot be accepted.

Please help me. I don’t understand Japanese very well, so I can hardly understand what this person is saying!

Would you please help him?

He is having trouble understanding Japanese.

What is Trio-Phone? Trio-Phone Service allows three people to have a conversation at the same time through the telephone. If you are having difficulties communicating in Japanese, call the International Exchange Lounge (082-247-9715). A volunteer interpreter will help you through the Trio-Phone Service!

Separate garbage properly and take it to the collection site by 8:30am on the

designated day. Please do NOT take garbage to the site on the night before. Garbage collection days vary depending on where you live and the category of the refuse. For further details, consult your local ward office or your neighbors to be sure of the proper disposal method. “Hiroshima 8”, a handbook on how to separate garbage, and “Hiroshima City Garbage Disposal Guidelines for the 2017 fiscal year”, a garbage chart with schedules of garbage collection days, are available at ward offices, branch offices and community halls. The Handbook and Guidelines are translated into English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Korean. These are also available at the International Exchange Lounge (International Conference Center Hiroshima), so please ask the staff if you need them.
