AOP Gaillac, presentation ...












HISTOIRE

Gaillac est un des plus anciens vignobles de Gaule. La culture de la vigne, importée en Gaule par les Phéniciens quatre siècles avant JC, se développe dans trois principaux berceaux : la Côte-Rotie, l’Hermitage, et le Gaillacois. La présence de la vigne et son utilisation pour l’élaboration de vin se confirme à Montans. Cette commune proche de Gaillac, abritait dès le IIème siècle avant JC, une grande poterie dédiée essentiellement à la fabrication d’amphores servant à transporter le vin.

En 972, Raymond 1er de Rouergue donne la ville de Gaillac à l’abbé Saint-Michel qui fera ériger, sur les bords du Tarn, l’Abbaye éponyme. Une partie du vignoble tarnais, détruit par les Maures, va alors être replanté et développé par les moines bénédictins de l’Abbaye Saint-Michel. La viticulture va très vite devenir une véritable force économique pour la région et ainsi gagner le soutien des comtes de Toulouse.Cette place de choix va être à l’origine de la création de règles très strictes régissant la viticulture et la vinification.

Le travail rigoureux des moines sur la sélection des cépages et le respect de la charte, font rapidement la réputation du vignoble. Celle-ci sera largement répandue grâce aux pèlerins, Gaillac se trouvant sur un des chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. Appréciés des rois de France, les vins de Gaillac le sont aussi en Angleterre et en Hollande.

HISTORY

Gaillac is one of the oldest wine-growing regions of Gaul (an ancient region of Western Europe including northern Italy, France, Belgium, part of Germany, and the southern part of the Netherlands). Grape vines, imported into Gaul by the Phoenicians during the 4th century B.C., grow in three main vineyards: Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Gaillac. The presence and use of the vine for making wine is revealed in the village of Montans. From the 2nd century B.C., this town near Gaillac had a large pottery that was essentially dedicated to making amphorae used to transport wine.

In 972, Raymond I of Rouergue gave the village of Gaillac to Abbot Saint-Michel, who established Saint-Michel Abbey on the banks of the Tarn River. Previously destroyed by the Moors, part of the vineyard on the Tarn River was replanted and nurtured by the Benedictine Monks of Saint-Michel Abbey. Viticulture quickly became a true regional economic strength and gained the support of the Counts of Toulouse. The strict regulations applied to viticulture and winemaking today originated in this well-known area.

The vineyard quickly became famous thanks to the hard work of the monks who carefully selected grape varieties and respected the strict regulations. Its reputation was then spread by the pilgrims following the Way of St. James. Gaillac wines were enjoyed by French kings and also sold in England and the Netherlands.

TERROIRS & CLIMAT

Si la vigne a trouvé en terre gallacoise des conditions climatiques exceptionnelles, elle a aussi un autre allié incontournable : le sol.Les vins de Gaillac offrent la palette la plus diversifiée du Sud-Ouest, en couleurs comme en saveurs. Et cela s’explique par la grande diversité de terroirs qui caractérise le vignoble. On en dénombre pas moins de 6 : Terrasses de la Rive Gauche, Coteaux de la Rive Droite, Plateau Cordais, Zone de Cunac, Zone de Cabanès et Zone de Lavaur.

e vignoble de Gaillac se trouve à 50 km à l’est de Toulouse dans le nord du département du Tarn. De l’est d’Albi, dans la zone de Cunac, jusqu’à Saint Sulpice, les vignes courent le long des deux rives du Tarn. Au nord, le vignoble commence quelques kilomètres au-dessus de la cité médiévale de Cordes-sur-Ciel et plonge vers le sud sur 40 kilomètres jusqu’à Graulhet.

Le gaillacois se situe dans une zone conflictuelle d’influences climatiques. La chaleur méditerranéenne, associée à l’humidité océanique bordelaise, offre au vignoble des conditions idéales. Mais ici, les vignerons vous parleront certainement de ce petit plus qui fait naitre les grands vins : l’Autan. TERROIRS & CLIMATE

In addition to exceptional climate conditions, the soil is also a remarkable and critical feature for the vines of Gaillac.In the Southwest, Gaillac wine has by far the widest range of colour and taste thanks to the large variety of terroirs, such as Terrasses de la Rive Gauche (left bank), Coteaux de la Rive Droite (right bank), Plateau Cordais, Le Noyau de Cunac and Zone de Cabanès, which help characterise the vineyards.

The Gaillac wine-growing region is located 50 km east of Toulouse in the northern part of the Tarn region. From the east of the town of Albi, in the area of Cunac, to the city of Saint-Sulpice, the vines run along two banks of the Tarn River. In the north, vineyards start a few kilometres above the medieval city of Cordes-sur-Ciel and then dive 40 kilometres south to Graulhet.

The area of Gaillac is located in a contrary climate zone. The heat from the Mediterranean combined with the ocean humidity of Bordeaux provides the perfect weather conditions for winegrowing. However here, winegrowers will certainly mention the added bonus: winds of Autan, which help to create fine wines. PRESENTATION

Localisation : L’aire d’appellation s’ouvre aux limites Est de l’agglomération tourangelle et s’étend sur 7 communes de la rive droite de la Loire et en bordure de son affluent, la Brenne.Superficie : 2 200 ha.

Histoire : On attribue le développement du vignoble à Saint Martin qui a implanté la célèbre abbaye de Marmoutier et, selon la légende, introduit des cépages et un mode de taille toujours en vigueur. Balzac a laissé son empreinte à Vouvray en y situant l’action de son roman "L’illustre Godissart", si bien que le buste de ce commis voyageur imaginaire orne encore une place du bourg…

Sols : Le vignoble couvre des coteaux pierreux sur substrat de tuffeau (craie blanche du Turonien) entrecoupés de vallées confluentes et recouvertes de «perruche» (argiles à silex qui donnent le caractère minéral) et « d’aubuis » (argilo-calcaire qui font la puissance des liquoreux).

Climat : En bordure de vallées confluentes, les sols se réchauffent rapidement sous l’influence océanique, faiblissante à ce niveau de la Loire qui pénètre jusqu’au coeur du vignoble. Des automnes ensoleillés favorisent la surmaturité voire la pourriture noble. L’obtention de vins tendres (demi-secs), moelleux ou liquoreux dépend de la variabilité climatique : l’effet millésime est déterminant. Par ailleurs on vinifie chaque année de grands Vouvray secs

Geographical location: The area covered by the appellation opens up on the eastern edge of Tours, and stretches across 7 communes on the right bank of the Loire and along the edge of its tributary, the Brenne.Surface area: 2,000 ha (5,000 acres)

History: The development of the vineyard is attributed to Saint Martin, who established the famous Abbey of Marmou-tier and, according to legend, introduced the grape varieties and pruning style still used today. Balzac also left his mark on Vouvray by using it as the setting for his novel, L’Illustre Gaudissart, to such an extent that the bust of this imaginary commercial traveller still adorns one of the squares in the centre of the village.

Types of soil: The vineyard grows on stony limestone substrate hillsides (white Turonian chalk), interspersed with confluent valleys and covered with “perruche” (flint mixed with clay, which gives mineral character) and “aubuis” (chalk mixed with clay, which gives very sweet wines their power).

Climate: Along the edge of the confluent valleys, the earth warms up quickly under the oceanic influence that penetrates right to the heart of the vineyard. Sunshine lasting well into the autumn months helps the grapes to over-ripen, and even to develop noble rot. The production of tender (off-dry), sweet or very sweet wines depends on varying weather conditions and the vintage (year) effect is therefore a decisive factor. Great dry Vouvray wines are made every year.

PRESENTATION

Localisation : L’aire d’appellation épouse les contours de la commune de Saint-Nicolas-de- Bourgueil. Le vignoble est situé aux confins de la Touraine et de l’Anjou, dans le prolongement Ouest de celui de Bourgueil, sur la haute terrasse de la rive droite de la Loire.Superficie : 1 080 ha.

Histoire : La culture de la vigne remonte sans doute ici à l’époque romaine, mais c’est autour de l’abbaye de Bourgueil, fondée en 990, que se développa véritablement le vignoble bourgueillois, dont celui de Saint- Nicolas. Le cépage Breton y fit son apparition en 1152, grâce à l’union de l’Anjou et de l’Aquitaine.

Sols : L’aire est située en majorité sur une large terrasse d’alluvions anciennes dont les sols profonds sont constitués de sables et de graviers. Au dessus des terrasses, le tiers du vignoble s’étend sur un coteau de tuffeau (craie du Turonien) recouvert de sables.

Climat : Le vignoble est largement ouvert sur la Loire qui, à cet endroit-là, avec le confluent de la Vienne, prend des dimensions exceptionnelles et laisse amplement pénétrer les influences maritimes. Le climat est donc légèrement plus océanique qu’à Bourgueil, avec le même coteau couvert de forêt qui protège des vents du Nord les pentes bien exposées.

The vineyard is located within the confines of the Touraine and Anjou areas, continuing on Westwards from the Bourgueil AOC area, on the upper terrace of the right bank of the Loire.Surface area: 1,050 ha (2,600 acres).

History: In this area, vine growing probably goes back to Roman times, but vineyards only really began to develop properly around the Abbey of Bourgueil, founded in 990. The Breton grape (Cabernet Franc) appeared there in 1152, as a result of the political alliance between the Anjou and Aquitaine regions.

Types of soil: The area is mostly on a wide terrace of old silt deposits, with a deep soil made up of sands and gravels. Above the terraces, a third of the vineyard stretches across a limestone (Turonian chalk) hillside covered with sand.

Climate: A large proportion of the vineyard opens out onto the Loire, which is exceptionally wide at this point as it joins the Vienne, and so allows the influence of the Atlantic to penetrate deep inland. The climate is therefore marginally more oceanic that in Bourgueil, but with the same forest covered hillside protecting the well-exposed slopes from the North wind.

Sur la route des sites du patrimoine francais : CHATEAU DE JOUX

Nid d'aigle des Sires de Joux, le château veille jalousement depuis 10 siècles, du haut de son éperon rocheux, sur une cluse qui protège Pontarlier, aux portes du Haut-Doubs.L'histoire de cette forteresse, dont les premières constructions remontent à 1034, présentent l'évolution des moyens de défense sur 2 hectares : les grosses tours du moyen-Age, les bastions d'époque Vauban, le fort moderne construit en avant du château par Joffre à partir de 1879.Un riche musée d'armes anciennes des XVIIIe et XIXème siècles, possédant plusieurs pièces rarissimes, complète la visite.

La copie à l'identique du "plan relief" du château mesurant 3.48 x 1.76 mètres et son audiovisuel complètent les différentes expositions.Trois fossés équipés de leur pont-levis gardent un monde de prison, du cachot de la légendaire Berthe de Joux aux cellules de Mirabeau, Kleist et Toussaint Louverture.Le souvenir du grand puits, vertigineux cylindre creusé dans le roc, reste gravé dans toutes les mémoires.

On the road of the french patrimony : THE CHATEAU DE JOUX

A veritable synthesis of 1,000 years of the history of fortification architecture, the Château de Joux experienced many of the major European conflicts: passage of Charles the Bold in 1476, occupation during the Thirty Years' War in 1639, the signing of the surrender during the French conquest of Franche-Comté in 1674...

From the 18th century onwards, the Château de Joux discovered a new vocation, that of state prison, alongside the Bastille and the Château d'If. A great many inmates were to discover the rigours of prison life within the walls of Joux and among them was the Comte de Mirabeau who, several years after his escape, was to play his part in the French Revolution as one of the authors of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The Château is also a major stage on the Abolitions Trail linking 4 sites which are symbols of the fight against slavery (Maison de la Négritude in Champagney (Haute-Saône), the birthplace of Abbé Grégoire in Emberménil (Meurthe et Moselle), the Victor Schoelcher Museum in Fessenheim (Haut-Rhin) and the Château de Joux (Doubs).

Au sein du musée, un parcours évoque, d’Ornans à Paris, la carrière de l’enfant du pays, la rupture esthétique qu’il mena, les milieux artistiques qu’il fréquenta, puis son engagement politique jusqu’à son exil et sa mort en Suisse. Avec un aménagement de plus de 1000 m2 et 21 salles d’exposition permanente et temporaire, le musée Courbet s’étend sur trois superbes hôtels particuliers. Sa nouvelle configuration permet de réaliser des expositions temporaires en simultané avec l’exposition permanente de plus de 75 oeuvres de l’artiste.Après la visite du Musée, il est possible de découvrir un lieu symbolique de la vie de Courbet qui a aussi fortement inspiré son oeuvre : la ferme familiale à Flagey qui accueille désormais un café-librairie et des expositions.

Le peintre Gustave Courbet est né le 10 juin 1819 à Ornans.Il arrive à Paris à vingt ans et devient, de triomphes en échecs, le maître de l'Ecole Réaliste.

Après des études considérées comme médiocres et qu’il abandonne, il part pour Paris vers la fin de 1839. Logé par son cousin Jules Oudot, il suit des études de droit et parallèlement fréquente l’atelier du peintre Charles de Steuben. Son ami d’enfance Adolphe Marlet l’introduit à l’atelier de Nicolas-Auguste Hesse un peintre d’histoire qui l’encourage dans la voie artistique. Courbet se rend aussi au musée du Louvre pour y étudier les maîtres, en particulier les peintres de l’école espagnole du XVIIe siècle Vélasquez, Zurbaran et Ribera. Il est admiratif du clair-obscur hollan-dais, de la sensualité vénitienne et du réalisme espagnol. Courbet est un œil, il a un sens unique de l'alchimie visuelle. Il est aussi influencé par les œuvres de Géricault dont il copie une tête de cheval. Il participe à la Commune, dans le courant des idées du philosophe Proudhon. Condamné emprisonné, il s'exile à la Tour de Peilz où il meurt en 1877. Il repose dans le cimetière d'Ornans, proche de sa maison.

On the road of the french patrimony : GUSTAVE COURBET MUSEUM

The permanent exhibition evokes the life of Gustave Courbet from Ornans to Paris, the aesthetic revolution that he led, the artistic circles he frequented, and his political and social commitmments. With a development of more than 1000 m2 of total area and 21 permanent and temporary exhibition halls, the new Courbet museum is spread over three buildings. Its new configuration allows for temporary exhibitions simultaneously with the permanent exhibition dedicated to the work of the artist. The museum trail leads the visitor from one to the other, while offering unpreceden-ted views of the Loue and Ornans town. The family farm in Flagey now hosts a café librairie and exhibitions.

The painter Gustave Courbet was born on June 10, 1819 in Ornans.He arrived in Paris twenty years and became triumphs in chess, the master of the Realist School.

After studying considered poor and abandoned it, he moved to Paris in late 1839 Lodged by his cousin Jules Oudot., He studied law and parallel frequent the studio of painter Charles de Steuben. His childhood friend Adolphe Marlet introduces the workshop Nicolas-Auguste Hesse a history painter who encouraged the artistic path.Courbet also visits the Louvre to study the masters, especially painters of the Spanish school of the seventeenth century Velázquez, Zurbarán and Ribera. It is admiring chiaroscuro Dutch, Venetian sensuality and Spanish realism. Courbet is an eye, he has a unique sense of visual alchemy. It is also influenced by the works of Géricault he copies a horse's head. He participated in the Commune, in the current ideas of the philosopher Proudhon. Sentenced imprisoned, he moved to the Tower of Peilz where he died in 1877 . He is buried in the cemetery of Ornans, near his home.

Ce village peut s'enorgueillir d'être l'un des plus beaux villages de France, avec ses ruelles caladées qui s'insinuent entre les maisons hautes, bâties à même le roc, agrippées contre ses flancs qui respirent de mille histoires et légendes.

Gordes est fier également de son superbe château dressé en son coeur nous rappelant un passé riche aussi bien en conquêtes qu'en souffrances et qui abrite désormais le Musée Pol Mara et l'hôtel de Ville.

Gordes préserve aussi sur ses terres, le village des Bories, ces curieuses constructions arrondies en pierres sèches, l'abbaye de Sénanque confinée dans son vallon verdoyant, le moulin des Bouillons et les caves du Palais Saint Firmin.

Classé un des Plus Beaux villages de France, Gordes a su se tailler une réputation mondiale dans le respect de son passé et de ses traditions, tout en étant un centre culturel très apprécié avec de nombreuses manifestations artistiques.

This village can boast about being amongst one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has narrow cobbled streets which thread their way through tall houses; built against the rock, clinging onto its flanks and whispering the tales of a thousand legends.

Gordes is also proud of its castle firmly planted in its very core and which reminds the passer-by of a past rich with conquests but also marked with the sufferings of its inhabitants. Today, the castle acts as both a Town Hall and a Museum sheltering the works of art of the painter Pol Mara.

Gordes also extends its territory to include the Bories village, those curious igloo-shaped structures made of stones - no mortar; the Sénanque Abbey set in its green valley, the Bouillons oil press and the cellars of St Firmin's s Palace.

Gordes is listed as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" ("The Most Beautiful Villages in France"). Gordes has been able to build a world reputation for itself, yet be respectful of its past and of its traditions. It is a well-appreciated centre for numerous artistic and cultural happenings.
