What is Design?

The word “design” is often used as a generic term that refers to anything that was made by a conscious human effort.

Design is also a process that is used to systematically solve problems.

Page 4: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

A design process is a systematic problem-solving strategy; with criteria and constraints, used to develop many possible solutions to solve or satisfy human needs or wants and to narrow down the possible solutions to one final choice.

What is a Design Process?

Example Design Process

1. Define a Problem

• The client with a problem to solve seeks out a designer.

• The designer Gathers information.• Media exposure of a current problem

inspires the designer to take action.

Page 7: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

2. Brainstorm

• A group problem-solving process in which each person in the group present ideas in an open forum.

• Generate and record ideas• Rapidly paced sessions will keep mind alert• Preliminary ideas

Page 8: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

3. Research and Generate Ideas

• Conduct interviews with those affected by the problem.

• Research solutions that may already exist; identify shortcomings and reasons why they aren’t appropriate to a given situation.

• Compile Ideas and report findings to the team.

Page 9: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

4. Identify Criteria and Specify Constraints

• Identify what the solution should do and the degree to which the solution will be pursued.

• Constraints are identified (i.e., budget and time are typical considerations).

• The Design Brief is drafted.

Page 10: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

5. Explore Possibilities

• Further development of brainstorming ideas with constraints and tradeoffs are considered.

• Alternative ideas are explored based on further knowledge and technologies

Page 11: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

6. Select an Approach

• Brainstormed information is reviewed, and any lingering questions are answered.

• Ideas are narrowed down through a voting process, or by use of a decision matrix.

• Final idea are decided on, usually through group consensus.

Page 12: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

7. Develop a Design Proposal

• The idea is explored in greater detail with annotated sketches.

• Critical decisions such as material types and manufacturing methods are made.

• Computer models are generated from detailed sketches to further refine the idea.

• Working drawings are produced so the idea can be built.

Page 13: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

8. Make a Model or Prototype

• Models may be made to help communicate the idea, and study aspects such as shape, form, fit, or texture.

• A prototype is constructed from the working drawings, so the solution can be tested.

Page 14: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

9. Test and Evaluate the Design using Specifications

• Experiments are designed and the prototype is tested in controlled and working environments.

• Performance data are gathered; results are analyzed and checked against established criteria.

• A formal critique is conducted to flesh out areas of concerns, identify shortcomings, and establish any need for redesign work.

Page 15: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

10. Refine the Design

• Design changes are made and the prototype is modified or rebuilt.

• Refinements are made until accuracy and repeatability of the prototype’s performance results are consistent.

• Documentation is updated to reflect changes.• User’s critique provides outside perspective to

help determine if established criteria have been met.

Page 16: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

11. Create or Make Solution

• Custom/Mass Produce• Package

Page 17: ® Forging new generations of engineers. Design Process Review

12. Communicate Processes and Results

• Designer(s) communicates the final solution through media such as PowerPoint, poster session, technical report.

• Market the Product• Distribute
