H4 Students Raise Money for a Local Charity.

On Wednesday 20th the H4 Visual Arts Students handed over a cheque For 30,000 NTD$ to the Taipei Guide Dog charity. Accompanied by the two Labradors Angus and Ellen, Tim and Erin from HuiGuang Guide Dog Centre showed the students how each of the guide dogs in Taipei undergo rigorous training before they become the invaluable guide for their blind owner, allowing them to find their way safely around Taipei’s busy streets. After 10 years acting as the eyes and ears for their blind owner, the dogs are given a well deserved retirement as a household pet. Very well done and thanks to TES artists: Christine Vranze, Karien van Langelaar, Catherine Leigh, Amanda Lo, Ray Yeh, Justen Waterhouse, Sharen Chen and Haruna Akashi for donating their fantastic works of Art, and to all those people who supported this year’s Art auction at the Christmas Bazaar.

Ergebnisse: Gruppe A Gruppe B 1) Int´l Team 1) TES A 2) TES B 2) Japanische Schule 3) Dominican 3) TES C 4) Tornados 4) Grace Play Offs Um Platz 7: Tornados – Grace = 4-3 n.E. Um Platz 5: Dominican – TES C = 2-1 n.E. Um Platz 3: Japaner – TES B = 4-0 Endspiel: Int´l Team – TES A = 2-1

TES at The South and East Asia Mathematics Competition (SEAMC)

On the 28th February 2008, at the unearthly hour of 4:40am, six students accompanied by Mr Lee and Ms Chang gathered at Wen Lin Road, to embark on a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to do battle with the most gifted and enthusiastic Mathematics students from some of the most prestigious international schools in the region. A new frontier for TES, this was our first ever participation in the annual SEAMC Mathematics competition. The students from TES who made it through the selection trials to attend this prestigious event were Chae Yoon Lim (H1), Kimberly Lin (B9), Michelle Rao (B9), Allan Chang (B9), Nelson Lee (H1) and Altman Tai (B8). There was a sense of nervous excitement as the stimulation of the early start began to wear off and the reality of the journey ahead started to set in. The four days required the students to spend 3 nights in a Kuala Lumpur hotel with other students from 30 schools, and to compete in a variety of Mathematics events, jointly hosted by the Alice Smith School and the Garden International School. The students also had many opportunities over the four days to get in some serious ‘retail therapy’, as there was a huge shopping mall connected to the hotel! The proceedings were capped off with an extravagant gala dinner. As well as being served with a sumptuous feast, the students listened to some guest speakers as they waited for the results to be announced. To our delight and everybody else’s amazement, one of the TES teams (Chae Yoon Lim, Kimberly Lin and Michelle Rao) was announced as the winner in one of the key events of the competition. They had beaten no less than 59 other teams in the Carousel competition! This was indeed an achievement very few schools manage in their very first attempt in such a challenging international competition. It is a testimony to the hard work and preparation, as well as to the raw ability of our students who took part. All of our students enjoyed the interaction with their peers from across the region, and have expressed a strong desire to take part again in next year’s competition (subject to age restrictions). Congratulations to the inaugural TES SEAMC teams on their significant achievements in Mathematics and for being such good ambassadors for our school. Paul Lee, Kathie Chang, Alan Daykin. Mathematics Department

Parents’ Maths Challenge Thanks to all parents who rose to the challenge of answering two questions from the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) in the last Newsletter, and below are the answers and winner. This week’s challenge is taken from the SEAMC competition in Kuala Lumpur and a TES gift goes to the first correct entry emailed in. 1) A 5-digit number containing no zeros has no identical digits. It contains 2 digits that are prime numbers, 2 digits that are square numbers, and one digit that is neither prime nor square. The third digit is twice the 5th digit. The 4th digit is 6 more than the 2nd digit. The 5th digit is 3 less than the 1st digit. What is the number?

University Update Our H4 students have been very busy during the first semester with applications to universities in the UK, USA, Canada and Europe. We are now at that time of the academic calendar when offers of courses are being received. I am pleased to report that TES students have been offered places at some excellent universities and colleges – here just a few examples from the UCAS applications in the UK: Exeter, Bristol, Durham, Imperial College London, Warwick, Portsmouth, Essex, Kent, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Lancaster, Brunel, Liverpool, York, Loughborough, University College London, Sussex. Some students have already received offers of places at North American universities such as Rutgers, St. Olaf, Butler, Michigan State, Arizona State, Washington State and Penn State. Over the next few weeks more decisions will be received from the US and Canada. Our H4 students have some very difficult decisions to make in the upcoming weeks – which university to accept and which to reject? We wish them well with those decisions. Mr. Greg Cassidy, University and Careers Counsellor. [email protected]
