Ø Complete a “T Chart” that compares and contrasts details from the movie and the reading. **You need AT LEAST 3 similarities and 3 differences.

Film Experience Reading Ideas Similarities: the movie addresses the Union’s willingness to work with African Americans even though the black regiments were not respected and treated equally compared to white soldiers.

Zinn discusses how the black soldiers were treated and did the most grueling work quoting Horace Greeley in claiming that “negroes…were first the servant of the Republic” pg. 150

Difference: The movie addresses the final push of American Indians west during the Civil War and how they would address the encroachment of white people.

Difference: Zinn discusses the beginning of the American Indian plight at the beginning of Westward expansion wrapping up the chapter discussing Van Buren’s approval of the forced movement of the Cherokee Nation. Pg. 148

Ø Essay Question: Contrast Zinn and the film; what are the major differences in their historical interpretations? § Make sure the essay has a clearly stated thesis that directly answers the question.
