It was a bit of a homecoming for Fox News reporter, Allison Harris, recently as she interviewed her former orthodontist, Dr. Jennifer Buchanan, for an on-air story. “I started seeing Dr. Buchanan in grade school and finished orthodontic treatment my junior year of high school,” Allison said. “I have twin brothers and one of them had braces with Dr. Buchanan too. In fact, my parents were so pleased with our results that my dad decided to have her put braces on him as well. So my family really got to know her over the years.”

The occasion of their acquaintance this time was Dr. Buchanan’s ninth annual Smiles Charity Concert. Allison was there, not as a patient, but as an award-winning journalist. “Of course, I’ve known about Dr. Buchanan’s charity work for years,” Allison said. “I remember attending her first charity skate night, when I was a kid. She’s always been a big supporter of this community and of any charity her patients were supporting. I remember her as someone always looking for ways to help others.”

Smiles Charity Concert Dr. Buchanan launched her annual fund raising event, the Smiles Charity Concert in 2008. As many as 15,000 community members attend each year and funds raised have helped build homes free of charge for 11 families, including eight for wounded veterans. Dr. Buchanan is currently launching her next philanthropic endeavor. Between now and August 10, the community is invited to bring pre-owned shoes (any condition) to Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics for her Shoes for Smiles shoe drive. Donations will be recycled to provide new athletic shoes for 100 McKinney kids, to start a new school year.

Meet Dr. BuchananJennifer Buchanan knew by age 10 that she wanted to be an orthodontist. “At 10 I chipped my front tooth which was very traumatic for me,” she said. “I already knew I wanted to go into business for myself after watching my father, who is a dermatologist, and my mom, who owned her own car import business. That early experience with my teeth helped me realize I’d like to help other people feel better about their smiles. It’s something that can greatly impact a person and their self-image.” After 20 years in practice, Dr. Buchanan is happy to report orthodontics has been the perfect choice for her.

“I love the relationships I’m able to forge with my patients and their families,” she said. “I’m starting to see my second generation of patients and I’ve been able to witness dramatic advancements in my field. For instance, Allison and I both wore headgear as part of our treatment. That headgear is a thing of the past now. And treatment is faster than it used to be.”

Second Generation of Care It was a kick for the Vandagriff boys, the first time they visited their new orthodontist, to see pictures of their Dad before and after his own braces years before. “I actually fought my Mom on getting braces,” Jeremy Vandagriff said. “When I finally gave in, I was starting college. Dr. Buchanan gave me clear braces and it was awesome. She’s put braces on both my boys now. We just love Dr. Buchanan.”

Jeremy’s wife Mindy Vandagriff remembers when they were still in college and Jeremy had his braces. ”Jeremy shared our engagement news with Dr. Buchanan and shortly after our wedding he came home with a thoughtfully planned gift basket filled with fun gifts.” states

Mindy. “We still have the beautiful basket 15 years later in our home. I was so impressed with Dr. Buchanan’s thoughtfulness, her personal relationship with her patients and her attention to the tiniest of details, that when it came time for our boys to visit an orthodontist, there was no question we were going to choose Dr. Buchanan Orthodontics.”

Stuart Irby and his brother were two of Dr. Buchanan’s first patients, almost 20 years ago. “I remember hanging out around the office, during my brother’s visits, in Dr. Buchanan’s first little office,” Stuart said. “It was always a fun place to be. There was a drink cart I liked to push around, when I was real small, to bring drinks to the other patients. Dr. Buchanan has been like a friend to my family ever since.”

“My team and I want each patient to leave our office feeling better than when they came in,” said Dr. Buchanan. “It’s our job to help them relax while they’re here; to be their friend; to do whatever we can to make their life better. Straightening their teeth is only part of what we do.”
