So whenI wasgiven the assign- mentto actually get to play some of the handmade-in-the-U.S.A. drums, I waselated. My findings: The Cooperman pandeiro, shaker pandeiro, and Glen Velez tar are top quality. There's nothing more beautiful than a drum that plays asgreat as it looks. Made in Vermont, these wonderful instru- mentsarethe bestof the best. Cooperman takes advantage of the traditions of solid bent-wood shell construction andcouples it with the creative innovations of some of the leading hand-drum artists in the world. Some experts have suggested that the North African/Middle Eastern tar hasbeen around for ihousands of years. The craftsmen at Cooperman have harnessed the essence of that history while enlisting the exper- tiseof guruhanddrummer Glen Velez to deliver a true musician's instrument. Part of the Cooper- man Artist lnnovations series, the Glen Velez tar is the real deal. The tar features Cooper- man'spatented internal tuning technology, which is, in a word, incredible. Allen screws areset deepintothe rim of the shell and takea T=grip Allen wrench for tuning. Having the tuning screws inset allows for a drum that is not shackled by exter- nal hardware mechanisms and maintains the instrument's tra- ditional appearance. lhe wood E-" inlay is also quite beautif ul. One really coolfeature of the single- ply ash-wood-shell drum is the unique cushioned archgrip, The grip helps prevent hand fatigue and makes playing more comfortable. Wiih the traditional character- istics of the Brazilian pandeiro in mind, Cooperman has come up with one heck of aninstrument. With a 10" diameter, 1.875" depth, and removable six-jingle setup, this drum istruly unique. AIong with the internaituning system, the drum isnot encumbered by uueighty or bulky external hard- ware. The precision -cut bearing edge r-nakes playing comfortable. The ornately engraved cupped jingles are separated bya flat jingle that gives the pandeiro its traditional dry sound. The ability to remove the jingles and chante the setup is a top-notch added bonus fea- ture. Depending onthe needs of yourmusical situation, you can add or remove jintles to dial in a moreprecise sound. The process is quick andeasy, so you can change ai the gigor in the studio. A separate smaller Allen wrench is provided for thisaction. The timbre of the drum is also flexible because of the variable tuning capability.
