Business Continuity vs. Remote Disaster RecoveryBusiness Continuity vs. Remote Disaster Recovery
• Need to differentiate between Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
• As defined in the “Glossary of Terms” by Disaster Recovery Journal– Disaster Recovery: “Activities and programs designed to return the entity to an
acceptable condition. The ability to respond to an interruption in services by implementing a disaster recovery plan to restore an organization's critical business functions.”
• It’s the recovery of service that a company “buys” as part of their Business Continuity Plan.• It’s restoring communications to a customer who has purchased a service as an immediate
need.• It is NOT CapRock’s plan to recover all its customers in the event that its facility is disabled
for an extensive period of time.
– Business Continuity: – “The ability of an organization to ensure continuity of service and support for its customers and to maintain its viability before after and during an event.”
• It’s the plan that a customer has for himself to insure that he will still be in business in the event of a disaster.
• It’s the internal plan that CapRock implements to insure it will still be in business if its facility is affected for an extended period of time.

Dual Teleport Configuration Service (DTCS) DescriptionDual Teleport Configuration Service (DTCS) Description
• What is DTCS? – Teleport Diversity & Redundancy– DTCS provides proactive disaster recovery for remote sites receiving voice, data, and Internet services
from CapRock’s North American networks. The service works like an insurance program to minimize potential disruption of service due to localized events that might impact teleport or terrestrial communications facilities based in Houston.
• How Does DTCS Work?– Hot Standby Hub Equipment at an Alternate Teleport– CapRock sites preconfigured with DTCS will ordinarily land their voice and data traffic at CapRock’s
Houston, Texas teleport. In the event that a local disaster, such as a major hurricane, were to threaten CapRock’s Houston facility, DTCS sites would be proactively switched over to a pre-designated alternate teleport located outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
• Why Pre-configure the Sites?– Proactive Voice & Data Rerouting– Many satellite service providers claim to have alternate teleport capability, but simply having another
teleport location is not the same as being prepared in the event that a network switch-over is required. By pre-configuring your remote sites with alternate routing capability to both the public Internet and public telephone network, CapRock can proactively switch your network traffic from one teleport to another, minimizing the effect of potential service disruptions.
• How Does CapRock DTCS Differ from Business Continuity Plans of Other Providers?– Prioritized Restoration of Service– DTCS is an optional service that not only pre-configures your remote sites to operate off of an alternate
teleport, but prioritizes the restoration or proactive switch-over of services over other customers in the network. Other satellite providers’ Business Continuity plans are based on a “Best Effort Only” approach, restoring services to all customers over a period of days or even weeks, but with no guarantees. At CapRock you can select the DTCS option and be assured that your site’s communications will stay online even during a potential weather event, because it was re-routed to the alternate teleport ahead of time.
