The Art of Philanthropy

CFRC 2012 Annual Report | 1

According to Peter Karoff, founder of The Philanthropic Initiative, “the art of philanthropy has no agreed-upon definition—it is seldom named or acknowledged as art, even though we know it when we see it. We know that the work is fundamentally intuitive, holistic, subjective, and judgment-based, all of which are core definitions of art. Art is defined as skill that results from knowledge and practice, according to aesthetic principles—like values and passions, and concepts such as moral imagination.”

Art and philanthropy improve the quality of life for individuals in any community. Randolph County is no exception. Unlike art, philanthropy cannot be viewed. You can’t touch it. It doesn’t have color, shape, or texture, and it can’t be photographed. Like art, however, it is designed to leave a lasting impression. The fabric of the community is more attractive as philanthropists support non-profit organizations, provide scholarships, and encourage projects that make a difference aesthetically, emotionally, socially, and/or economically.

The philanthropic spirit goes beyond the dollars donated. It is convening organizations to encourage collaboration. It is the base that provides a future for fine arts, music, theatrical performances, care for individuals through the local food pantry, and support for our four-legged friends needing love and a home. Philanthropy is money, it is time, it is love, it is caring about the community we live in—where we want our children to grow up. Art comes into the picture when philanthropists “visualize” the future they want to create and impact.

There may not be an agreed-upon definition, but the Art of Philanthropy is very visible in Randolph County. The Community Foundation of Randolph County could be looked at as the artist’s palette. We are the tool used to color the world.

In the broadest sense, the Community Foundation of Randolph County is here to make our community the very best place to live, work, and raise a family. As a non-political private organization, we are uniquely able to provide grant money for innovative projects that have a major impact on our community.

The Community Foundation’s work falls into three major categories: grantmaking, donor service, and community convening. Our most visible activity is the presentation of grants and scholarships we award each year. Most of these awards come from income earned on permanently endowed funds. Scholarships and other grants come from funds that donors have established for certain purposes. Helping donors to achieve their charitable objectives is an important goal of the Foundation. We work with individuals and organizations desiring to create a lasting legacy for Randolph County.

Because we are a non-political private organization, the Foundation can also serve as a convener of organizations and individuals around a particular cause. As an organization looking out for the welfare of the entire county, we can be a safe and neutral place for people to discuss problems and potential solutions to the issues that face our community.

We are YOUR Community Foundation. Our mission is to bring people and resources together to enrich the lives of Randolph County residents.

In 2012, CFRC awarded grants to several non-profit organizations to support their efforts to improve the overall quality of life in Randolph County. Below are some examples of organizations making positive, impactful contributions to our community.

The P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter in Union City will rescue dogs without homes and place them with loving owners.

The Randolph County YMCA recently completed its renovation, adding several specialized rooms for day care.

The Shalom Center (a.k.a. the Winchester Area Food Pantry) construction is underway, located just south of the hospital. When completed, it will provide valuable food items to families in Randolph County.

CFRC 2012 Annual Report | 3

Starting in 2012, the Community Foundation will surprise the Lilly Recipient at their high school instead of announcing the recipient at the annual banquet. The Celebration of Excellence banquet honors the ten Semi-Finalists and the five Finalists. This year’s recipient was Mylie Winger from Winchester Community High School. The visit was not a surprise to her, however – she was offered the Goodrich Scholarship in addition to the Lilly, requiring her to make the decision between the two scholarships beforehand. She ultimately chose the Lilly. Mylie is currently attending Taylor University, pursuing a degree in Communication.

The Community Foundation is fortunate to be a part of the Community Foundation Internship Program through Indiana Grantmakers Alliance. The program is funded by the Lilly Endowment and is designed to provide an opportunity

for college students to learn more about foundations, how they work, and why they are so important to the community. The intern chosen for summer 2012 was Kyler Naylor, a lifelong Randolph County resident and recipient of the Lilly Scholarship in 2010. During the summer, he was able to update and maintain our website, assist with the completion of recertification materials, and design the Annual Report.

The Community Foundation’s annual Thanks for Giving banquet was held on November 8th at the Community Center in Union City. The recipients for the fall grant cycle were announced, as well as the Indiana Arts Commission grant awards. A total of $14,950 was awarded in fall grants this year. $142,756 was awarded in Region 5 IAC grants.

The Community Foundation was honored with the Non-Profit of the Year Award by the Winchester Area Chamber of Commerce on December 6th.

CFRC held its annual Dictionary Day on October 16. Each student in Randolph County, grades 1-6, received either a dictionary, atlas, or classic novel. The Dictionary Day program was established in conjunction with the Literacy Coalition to promote literacy and future readers in the county.

The second annual Women’s Fund Luncheon was held on February 29th at the Beeson Clubhouse. There were approximately 35 new or renewed membership donations to the Women’s Fund, and the auction brought in $580 for the fund. The luncheon is an opportunity to promote membership in the Women’s Fund, which provides grants for the encouragement and empowerment of women and girls in Randolph County.

The Community Foundation of Randolph County was busy throughout 2012. Take a look at some of the things we were able to accomplish.

The Art of Giving Back - Grant AwardsThe Community Foundation of Randolph County’s mission reflects how the organization operates—the gifts of individuals, groups, and businesses are invested for the purpose of providing grants for the benefit of the county. These grants may be scholarships to deserving students, or grants to a non-profit organization serving to improve the lives of Randolph County residents. Twice a year, the Foundation accepts grant requests for the funding of projects and organizations. A committee consisting of CFRC board members and community advisors reviews the grant applications and determines which grants will be funded, along with the level of funding. When making the decisions, the committee always considers the quality of the organization and its projects and programs, as well as how the residents of the county are served; the committee strives to fund projects with the highest impact to the county. Grants awarded through the semi-annual cycle are awarded from the Community Foundation’s Community Enrichment Fund and the Union City Community Fund.

The Art of Excellence - Lilly Community Scholars

CFRC 2012 Annual Report | 7

Each year, CFRC awards the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship to one deserving senior in Randolph County. Applicants must meet the scholarship criteria to apply. The applications are scored by the Scholarship Committee and narrowed down to ten Lilly Semi-Finalists. The top five Finalists are then interviewed by the committee, and a recipient and two alternates are selected. The 2012 Lilly Recipient was Mylie Winger, of Winchester Community High School.

Mylie Winger

“I am extremely honored to be a Lilly Scholar. Having this title is a privilege that has blessed my life in many ways. I am driven to continue in academic excellence to the best of my ability because I represent an amazing group of scholars. Taylor University has enabled me to learn and grow academically, socially, and spiritually. I would not be able to attend this prestigious school without the Lilly Scholarship. I am able to concentrate on schoolwork and enjoy my classes without worrying that I will be in debt for years to come. The scholarship will also allow me to spend a semester abroad in Ireland, which will open my eyes to a new culture and way of learning.

Besides academics, I know that being a Lilly Scholar will help me when I graduate and begin a career because this award infers a good work ethic and strong capabilities to potential employers. I have always done my very best to achieve excellence, and this title has enabled me to continue to strive for greatness at a deeper level. I will always be thankful and honored to be a Lilly Scholar.”

Tom and Betty Herold once saw an advertisement in the newspaper stating the Lilly Endowment would match any donation made by a community member to their local community foundation. This is how the Herold Scholarship came to be at the Community Foundation of Randolph County.

In one lump investment, the Herolds formed an endowed fund that would be self-sustaining in perpetuity. Ideally at a 5% earning rate, their fund gives a total of $2,000 annually to students who plan to continue education past high school.

Tom, a retired Chief Financial Officer, and Betty, a former Indiana University professor, came to Randolph County in 1979 where they finished raising their two children on a homestead near Ridgeville. As members of the local St. Joseph Catholic Church, they directed their scholarship to benefit a student that is a member of their congregation.

“It’s always good to give back,” Tom explained. “At some point in our lives we all have money, talents or time that we can offer. We should give what we can.”

Winchester Community High School teacher and coach leaves a legacy

On August 18, 2008, Gary Horner unexpectedly passed away at his home from a heart attack. He left behind his wife and high school sweetheart, Linda, four children, and numerous students whose lives he influenced as a teacher and coach.

Horner graduated from Winchester Community High School in 1968 and later obtained a teacher’s license from Manchester College and a master’s degree from Ball State. He taught a variety of subjects throughout his career at Spartanburg Junior High School, Lee L. Driver Middle School, and Winchester Community High School. He also coached track, football, and basketball.

His congeniality was apparent at his calling and funeral, held at the Winchester Community High School Fieldhouse, where over 1,500 people were in attendance. Instead of flowers, the family requested that gifts go to their church, the Jericho Friends Meeting, the WCHS Athletic Boosters, or to the Gary Horner Scholarship Fund set up at the Community Foundation of Randolph County.

The scholarship holds specific parameters for its recipients. Horner spent the last 15 years of his coaching career as head of the Lady Falcon’s varsity basketball team. Therefore, this scholarship goes to a 4-year member of the Winchester Community High School girl’s basketball team who demonstrates good scholastic standing, hard work, community service, and overall citizenship. The scholarship allows the Horner family to place value on ideals that Gary was passionate about and memorialize him for years to come.

Randolph County man honors mother and education

The Rickert-Shierling Educational Fund represents two people who understand the value of education: Elizabeth Rickert Shierling and Tom Shierling. This fund, housed at the Community Foundation of Randolph County, will be able to provide educational opportunities to Randolph County residents for years to come.

Tom Shierling received the Best Scholarship in 1963, which helped to finance his music education at Indiana University. He never forgot how much that aid meant to him during college. “So, over the years, the idea of ‘carrying forward’ was always in the back of my mind,” he explained.

Tom’s mother, Elizabeth Rickert Shierling, was an educator for over 30 years and helped to instill the importance and value he had for learning. Upon her death in February of 2011, Tom established this fund with a starting gift. The fund provided a means for donations in memory of his mother, helping it to grow. Tom plans to fully establish the fund through a bequest. Financial planning now provides the opportunity for him to eventually give $5,000 through the fund on an annual basis to promote educational opportunities in Randolph County.

This particular fund is open to all Randolph County residents, not just high school seniors. The fund will provide assistance for those going to college, returning to college, or starting college late, and will support continuing education such as attendance at conferences and seminars. It does give preference to those interested in studying human sexuality or secular humanism.

“I like the idea of leaving a meaningful legacy,” Shierling said. With this fund he was able to honor his mother while leaving his own mark on the education of Randolph County residents.

The Art of Investing - Ways to Give

CFRC 2012 Annual Report | 15

The important work of the Foundation and your local charities can be supported in various ways. Not sure how to give? We’ve tried to outline your options as simply as possible—each comes with unique opportunities, one of which is bound to be just right for your personal charitable giving objectives.

BequestsOne of the most popular and simplest ways to give—a bequest—allows you to create a legacy without taking cash out of your pocket during your lifetime. If you are considering a bequest, let us explain the many options you have and how we will make sure your gift is used as intended.

Beneficiary DesignationsYou can also name the Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Doing so is generally a simple process that can be easily modified at any time to meet your changing needs. Moreover, using retirement assets to fund your charitable interests is often a tax-wise strategy.

Charitable Gift AnnuitiesCharitable gift annuities allow you to make a donation and receive income for life. They offer a competitive rate of return and qualify the donor for a current income tax deduction. Gift annuities are often a good option for charitably-minded older adults.

Donor Advised FundsA donor advised fund is perfect for the donor who wants to stay involved with how their gift is used. It’s also a great way to help teach children or grandchildren about philanthropy.

Named Endowed FundsIf you’d like to create a lasting legacy, consider a named, endowed fund. Establishing an endowed fund offers ongoing support for the charity of your choice and provides you with valuable tax benefits. Endowed funds may also be created in honor or memory of a loved one or friend to assure they are remembered forever.

Anonymously Perhaps you’re a very private person who wants to support our community but doesn’t want everyone else to know. Gifts made anonymously to the Foundation assure your privacy, as well as your charitable intent.

My time as President of the Community Foundation Board has reinforced something that I have always felt, that there is a profound commitment to leave our community a bit better than the way we found it. The depths of feeling people have for Randolph County is truly an inspiration.

Randolph County has been home to many generous individuals, families, and organizations over the years, all of which share a common characteristic—passion. A passion for Randolph County, a passion for a particular cause or opportunity, and a passion for giving back.

It has been an honor to work with and on behalf of such kind and thoughtful philanthropists, both large and small, who give selflessly to our community to honor Randolph County’s past while working to secure its future. Thank you for giving the CFRC the opportunity to do more than many thought possible for the past twenty years. Thank you for helping us make charitable giving a permanent part of Randolph County’s history, and future.

Chip Loney, President
