J 19, 2020

In Today’s Gospel, Let’s reflect on….

Grace and sin, belief and unbelief, good and evil all exist together. While we wrestle with these two dimensions of reality inwardly, they

are also witnessed in the actions and words of others. Many, all too often, beat themselves up because of their sin. We are also all too quick to pass

judgment on others whom we perceive to be in error and walking down a wrong path. God does not make rash judgments, nor should we. Patience is

the order of the day as is an understanding that God is ultimately the caller of the shots.

Our faith tells us that while God allows the wheat and the weeds to coexist, the wheat will always triumph. As long as we can cultivate

even a little faith and a small measure of desire for God, He can produce abundant blessings and good things. Even when the weeds seem to have

triumphed, there still may be a small measure of faith remaining that can be cultivated and grown. It doesn’t take much! Unless a person totally

allows the weeds to reign, there is always to be found at least a small measure of faith, good, light, and love. With even this small portion, God can

produce abundant growth.

Admittedly, it is easy to give into the weeds, and they grow very quickly. Any gardener knows this to be true. Sometimes, the weeds even

seem more attractive and vibrant. Dealing with weeds can quickly become a losing battle, and they can look healthier and grow faster than the very

plants we are trying to protect. It’s easy to give into them and let them win. While God will deal with all things in due time, we are responsible for

keeping things in check in the short term. It is our task to keep our eyes fixed on God’s presence and mercy. We are asked to avoid judgment. And, it

is not our responsibility to deal with the weeds in someone else’s garden, only our own. One garden is enough responsibility for anyone.

Weeds have power. We have to realize this. While they can appear attractive and healthy, they can quickly choke us off from God’s

presence. Our task is one of maintenance and cultivating a desire for God. Even the smallest kernel of faith can grow into something wonderful. In

God’s time, the eternal harvest will come, and we will no longer have to worry about the weeds.

At this time, we’d like to take this opportunity to

welcome The Elwood Family and Mr. & Mrs.

Thomas Paulus as new members of St. Damien of

Molokai Parish.

It is our hope to meet all their spiritual needs and also

take this time to extend an invitation to join in the

various future social events and ministries.

Why Pray the St. Damien Novena?

St. Damien of Molokai is the patron saint of lepers. He is also a highly regarded figure in Hawaii. Though his

patronage is very specific, anyone who feels alone or outcast will especially like this saint. St. Damien was a

wonderful example of Christlike love to those who were considered different. His work with the lepers of

Molokai made him a saint because of the overwhelming love he showed them. St. Damien is a natural choice

for those who suffer from leprosy, illness, or quarantine. He is also beloved by Hawaiians. You can also pray

the St. Damien Novena for any intention!

S. D M l k Nn Prr S. D M l k Nn D 1

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank you Lord Jesus for

the powerful witness of love that you provided in St. Damien of Molokai. I pray that I will have the same

love toward all I meet, especially those who are different than me. St. Damien, you were a spiritual minister

and leader to people with leprosy. Thus, you were not too proud to work with the most outcast members of

society. Help me to remember those in my own life and culture who are seen as outsiders. Remind me to

invite them into my world to make them feel welcome and respected. Keep me from treating those who are

different as unworthy of love and respect. Help me to remember that all people are equal in God’s eyes. As

the patron of lepers, I bring to you in my heart all those who suffer from terminal illnesses and all of those

who feel outcast from society in some way. Please also pray for these intentions I hold in my heart:

(State your intentions here) St. Damien, Pray for Us! In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the

Holy Spirit. Amen. ( To be continued).

Just as a reminder, our columbarium has been installed in the northwest corner of St. Joseph Cemetery. A columbarium niche

provides a final resting place for those who are cremated. The columbarium offers an alternative to a traditional burial. Our “Mother of

Mercy” columbarium contains 96 niches. Each niche can accommodate one urn or a companion urn for two people. Niches continue to

be available for purchase upon your thoughtful consideration. Traditional cemetery plots are also available for purchase. We

encourage you to explore the possibility of prearranging your final resting place at our parish cemetery of Saint Joseph. Take a drive

out there on one of our beautiful summer days to see its setup and sections. Please contact Lori Possum, cemetery sexton, at 860

6889566 ext. 311.

“A cemetery is a history of a people a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today. A cemetery exists

because every life is worth loving and remembering, always.”

It is customary and fitting to remember loved

ones who have died with memorial donations to

a favorite cause or charity. In this way, the

memory of the deceased is honored and a good

work, either civic or religious, is perpetuated. There are numerous

charities that have been traditionally designated for such purpose.

At times, we are also offered donations to these funds to honor

particular individuals at special times of the year or to commemorate an

event in their lives. We are grateful to the following who have donated

to the:

In Remembrance of Charles Sanders

The 2021 Mass Book is open for your requests for intentions.

The Kid Connection

Today we celebrate The 16 th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Jesus told many parables about the Kingdom of Heaven. In today’s Gospel reading Jesus tells three parables.

The first one is called the parable of the sower. In this parable, the farmer allows the

wheat and the weeds to grow together. In the second parable, Jesus teaches that the

Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed. In the third parable, Jesus says that the

Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast.

In these parables, Jesus is teaching us that little things can make a big difference. In

fact, the Kingdom of Heaven - the great news that Jesus came to announce - begins with the smallest of

actions. That means that every good thing that we do, even if it is small, can have tremendous effect when

we do it because we love Jesus!
