Egglestetton i s a medium-size colonial p lantat ion house with notably f i n e woodwork. The house i s i n a good s t a t e of preservation having undergone an extensive r e s to ra t i on i n 1972-73. Included i n the work was the addi t ion of a one-story bedroom wing t o the rear , ca re fu l ly designed t o harmonize with the proportions and fabr ic of the main par t .

The main and o r ig ina l par t of the house is an approximately 28' x 60' rec- tangular s t ruc tu re of frame, one-and-a-half s t o r i e s i n height , with a gambrel roof and shed dormers; The house has f i v e unevenly spaced bays on each f ron t with trjo small windows i n the upper l eve l of each gable end. .

The dormers, end windows, and two rear windows appear t o r e t a i n t h e i r orig- i n a l wide-muntin sash, 'but the remaining f i r s t - f l o o r windows have nine-over nine early-nineteenth-century sashes. Exterior mater ia ls include a pa t te rn ed sheet-metal roof, ear ly , i f not o r ig ina l , beaded weatherboards, and br ick foundations l a i d i n English bond. Additions t o the house o the r than the bedroom wing previously mentioned include a one-story f r o n t porch (re- moved i n the renovation) and two small glass-enclosed porches on the e a s t end. The nor ther ly of these porches s h e l t e r s an or ig ina l ex t e r io r door with X-paneling i n the lower half .

The i n t e r i o r of the house has a center-passage plan with two uneven-size rooms t o the e a s t and one la rge room to the west. Nearly a l l the o r ig ina l woodwork survives. The center passage has an L-plan, c losed-s t r ing s t a i r with winders, p la in newels, turned balusters , and molded handrail . Around the passage i s a baluster-type cha i r r a i l attached t o a p l a i n board. The l a rge r and more e laborate f i r s t - f l o o r (west) room has a f i n e paneled end wall consis t ing of a center f i rep lace flanked by f l u t ed p i l a s t e r s on pedes- t a l s . The f i rep lace opening i s surrounded by a bolection molding, a r a r e use of t h i s fea ture i n the South. Also on the end wall a r e small doors opening i n t o chimney c lose t s . A l a t e r p a r t i t i o n t ha t formerly divided the room was removed i n the recent renovation.

The southeast room also has a paneled end wall with f l u t ed p i l a s t e r s s e t on p la in pedestals. Instead of a bolection molding, i t s f i r ep l ace opening has archi t rave trim with a segmental arch and keystone. A small chimney c lo se t door i s t o the south of the fireplace, but on the nor th s ide i s a cupboard s e t i n the paneling. The cupboard has a single-panel door with a segmental top; ins ide a re scalloped shelves. The cupboard door is hung on H hinges. Nearly a l l the other doors throughout the house a r e hung on HL hinges. The room t o the north of the southeast room (now the ki tchen) has a paneled corner chimney piece. The ups ta i r s woodwork is s imi l a r t o t h a t below but much simpler.

The house is s e t i n a l a rge yard with broad lawns, boxwood-lined walk, and a var ie ty of shade t rees . One ea r ly outbui lding, an e a r l y 19th-century kitchen, remains.

Egglestetton is a medium-size co lon ia l p lantat ion house dis t inguished by i t s picturesque ex te r io r and exceptionally f i n e i n t e r i o r .woodwork. The woodwork, which includes impressive paneled end walls i n the pr inc ipa l rooms, i s i n a pa r t i cu l a r ly f i n e s t a t e of preservation. The house was b u i l t f o r Joseph Eggleston, Jr. (1754-1811) who served as a major under "Light Horse Harry" Lee i n the Continental Army and l a t e r a s a congressman from Virginia, 1798-1801. '@e exact dates of construct ion a r e not known, but a r ch i t ec tu ra l evidence indicates a date not l a t e r than the 1770s.

The e a r l i e s t reference t o the Eggleston family i n Amelia County is a 1747 deed from Edmund Booker,Jr. t o Richard Eggleston fo r 200 acres on the upper s i d e of Nibbs Creek. 'Phis same property was sold i n 1750 by Richard Eggle- s ton t o Joseph Eggleston, Sr. f o r 95 pounds. Eggleston was a t t h a t time l iv ing i n Middlesex County but subsequently moved t o Amelia County between 1758 and 1759. Joseph Eggleston, Sr. a lso acquired o ther land i n the F l a t Creek-Nibbs Creek area i n 1762. This par t i cu la r parcel contained some 600 acres and was acquired from Edmund Smith and o thers f o r 540 pounds. There i s no way t o determine which par t of the combined Eggleston land t h a t Eggle. ston's son, Joseph Eggleston, JK., b u i l t h i s house on. I n 1799, an insur- ance policy was issued t o Joseph Eggleston fo r h i s p lan ta t ion i n Amelia County consis t ing of a "wooden dwelling, one s to ry high with a Dutch roof, 60 by 28 feet ." He was by t h i s time married t o h i s second wife, Judi th Cary, an owner of considerable holdings i n her own name i n Amelia County.

Major Eggleston died i n 1811 and l e f t a l a rge e s t a t e t o h i s severa l childrer To h i s e ldes t son, he l e f t h i s plantat ion known as "Kennons" on the Appomat- tok River. To h i s second son, he willed land he owned i n Ohio, and to h i s youngest son, Francis, he l e f t "the land whereon I l i v e on F l a t and Nibbs Creek," t h i s being Egglestetton. Francis was a minor a t the time, and h i s mother, Judith,was t o keep possession of one-half of the land and the dwelling house a s long as she l ived; it was then t o pass t o Francis. Joseph Eggleston's inventory i s par t i cu la r ly in te res t ing . I t s value ap- proached $27,000 and included furn i tu re , such as a backgammon t ab l e , and a subs tan t ia l l i b r a r y with copies of Spectator, the Ta t t l e r , Wealth of Nation: Theory - of _ the - 9 Earth works of Thomas Paine, Clarendon's History, works of Shakespeare and plutarch, and a number of books on geography and.naviga- t ion. It is obvious t ha t Major Eggleston was a widely read man.

Egglestetton remained i n the possession of Everard Francis Eggleston u n t i l
