Energy and Climate Change are closely linked. During the past 50
years Global Warming and Climate Change have become
critical issues concerning the very survival of our planet. Earlier
people were not even aware of the impact their energy use had
on the environment.© Centre for Environmental Research & Education (CERE) 2011

Earth’s climate is changing because
global temperatures are
rising
The temperature of the earth has risen by almost 0.8°C in the last 150 years and if the Earth continues to get hotter the temperature could rise by as much as 6.4°C by 2100 © Centre for Environmental Research & Education (CERE) 2011

Global Temperature are rising because Greenhouse Gases like CO2 are being constantly released into our
atmosphere

The rising levels of CO2 are mainly due to an increased use of energy by a growing human
population.
Most of our electricity is made in thermal power plants that burn fossil fuels (mainly coal) and release
large amounts of CO2. most of our cars, buses and trucks use petrol and diesel that release CO2.

70% OF ALL ENERGY USED IN INDIA COMES FROM BURNING FOSSIL FUELS

Gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are called GREENHOUSE GASES. These act like a blanket surrounding the earth and prevent the sun’s heat from escaping into space, keeping the earth warm and habitable. This is called the GREENHOUSE EFFECT.
When we add even more greenhouse gases to our atmosphere it is like covering the earth in thicker blankets, making it hotter and hotter.
Since the start of the Industrial Revolution, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have increased. This has caused temperatures to rise higher than they have been in the last 400,000 years.
