It is customary to bring back سوغاتی (gifts) for EVERYONE whenever an individual takes a trip, whether the trip is within or outside of Iran. Note that the meaning of سوغاتی (a Turkish loanword) differs from souvvvenir in that it is a gift intended for others. In contrast, the original Latin meaning of souvenir is bring to mind and is a gift for oneself.

When people go on trips they often bring back souvenirs (سوغاتی), like antiques etc. List what you might buy and bring back from Iran for ,(لباس) clothing ,(عتيقه)yourself and family members. Do the ones you know in Persian.

B-form in Persian

In Persian, the B-form has different functions. Sometimes, the B-form is used in giving orders/ directions, when it is called the imperative. Unit 1 contained many examples of such usage. Also, the B-form can be used in talking about the possibility of an action. Then it is called the subjunctive. As you may have already noticed, the second kind of B-form has a different structure than the first. In the latter, the B-form is preceded by a modal (e.g. want/ (خواستن and the helping and main verb are both conjugated. Using your knowledge of personal verb end-ings, see if you can conjugate the verbs “want to buy” and “want to go” for all persons.

Shopping Compliments/Niceties:

Compliments or تعارف have a great place in everyday life in Iran. For exaaample when the shopping is done and it is time to pay, then تعارف begins to be used. In this situation قابلی ندارد means literally: “It is worth nothaaing” i.e., no need to pay. بفرمایید means “take it and go, no need to pay”; .”means “let us treat you (this time) , مهمان ما باشید All three expressions share the same intended meaning of “no need to pay”, and should be taken only as they are intended, that is تعارف and nothing more. Being able to respond accordingly is appreciated by the native speakers of Persian and greatly impresses them. While there are numerous ways to respond to such niceties, one response which may work in most such cases is خواهش می کنم , or “please, don’t mention it,” or “I insist”

Quantifiers

You have already learned the counter (quantifier) تا. In this lesson,several new counters are introduced for various items (food). These are:.کیسه ,بسته ,شانه ,قالب ,شیشهNote that the counter تا precedes all of these counters. In this context, تا has two main functions:

1) It is a plural marker (like “s” in English); and2) it acts both as a plural marker and counter when no other counters are present. Example: نبات آب تا .دو Note that تا is only used in Colloquial Persian as a quantifier!Also, it has some other meanings which will be explained later.

The suffix »ات«

As you know, the plural nouns in Persian are formed by adding “ها” or to singular nouns. However, in some Arabic words used in Perss ” ان “sian, you will see the Arabic plural markers instead. These are: ون، ین ،ات and the plural words containing these markers are called جمع مکسر )e.g. .(اساتیدs استاد

In nouns that end in a vowel )e.g. سبزی), you may see ات being replaced by .جات In the ad you read do you see any other plural noun/s ending in جات .
