Build Together Alberta has had a busy 2018, attending a number of events and hosting some of their

own. In addition to outreach, they sold all 100-custom Hillberg and Berk necklaces and have created limited-edition earring and necklace sets that are now available for purchase. The province of Alberta has faced many challenges in 2018 and Build Together Alberta was not immune. Build Together Alberta is looking ahead with a positive focus on solidarity and building on the strength of their membership. Stay tuned to find out about their upcoming participation in a Labour Market Project as well as a chance to document the stories of unionized construction workers on behalf of the Alberta Labour History Institute.

Over the past year, the Alberta Chapter has participated in a number of events including presentations at A. Blair McPherson Elementary School.

Different members of the team attended events including the Economics of Inclusion Luncheon with MP Randy Boissonnault, speaking Period- Guests of Christina Grey, the Minister of Labour, Alberta Federation of Labour Open House, Building Trades of Alberta MLA Reception, Skills Alberta, Ironworkers Western District Council Apprenticeship Competition, various lobbying events and other community events including Solidarity Slugfest.

Build Together Alberta hosted their first Curling Bonspiel which was a great success! There were many more events that members participated in and Build Together Alberta is looking ahead to another busy year!

Adopted a new progressive language expanding membership in Build TogetHER BC to anyone who is a woman in the Building Trades as well as anyone who has experience as a woman in the Building Trades.

Started a recognition program whereby contractors, unions, labour and business leaders are recognized with a certificate for their support of women in trades.

Awarded a $1,000 scholarship to an apprentice taking training at a union-recognized school for her work to advance women in trades.

Attended speaking engagements and presentations to Women Build Nations, BC Building Trades Convention, Girl Guides, inmates at Fraser Valley Institution for Women, high school students at the Delta Trades & Technical Fair, women recovering from abusive relationships at a drop-in Centre.

Hosted a table on Labour Day at the Pacific National Exhibition.

Developed an introductory video.

Partnered with BC Centre for Women in the Trades and other tradeswomen to do a construction project to assist a women’s drop-in centre in one of Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhoods.

Hosted speaking engagement with Theresa King, the first woman president of the Florida Building Trades.

Earned media attention through media releases and letters to the editor.

Goals for 2019 include continued funding a Build TogetHER scholarship• Make a submission to the BC Employment Standards Act review

process• Launch a series of presentations to municipalities and school

districts on using their hiring power to advance the percentage of tradeswomen in the skilled construction trades (barriers women face on construction sites, such as a lack of maternity provisions and access to clean washrooms, are not faced by trades workers at the school and civic levels. These workers belong to public sector unions with maternity provisions in their contracts, and their washrooms are permanent and maintained).

Build Together Manitoba had a busy year, with members marching in the annual Women’s March, and attending Women in STEM and Tades Breakfast.

Members participated in different speaking events, including a panel on Building HerStory, talking to teachers and students at Skills Manitoba, and participating in mentoring at the Manitoba

Construction Career Expo and Try-A-Trade events. Other events included Sisters in the Brotherhood Conference, Women Build Nations, Supporting Women in Trades, attending a rally against Bill 28, and speaking at the Manitoba Legislature.

Media coverage was generated through interviews that members of Build Together gave to the media. Supporting diversity and inclusion, members attended the Winnipeg Pride Parade. Giving back is also a key part of the work of this Chapter, including a Habitat for Humanity build.

Build Together will continue to participate in speaking opportunities as they come up to promote women in skilled trades, and attending conferences and training sessions including Supporting Women in Trades Conference 2019 in Vancouver and Tradeswomen Build Nations – the largest conference of its kind – in Minneapolis this fall.

Build Together Saskatchewan was busy over the last year, from

speaking engagements to promoting women in the trades, to attending various trainings and conferences.

Other activities included hosting an all-female Try-a-Trade Event for hundreds of high school students, an Easter Donation Drive for a local shelter, networking socials, presenting at the Saskatchewan Building Trades Conference, attending Women Build Nations and the NDP Leadership Convention. A year of firsts, Build Together Saskatchewan hosted their First Annual Mother’s Day Brunch Fundraiser and successfully launched their own necklace campaign with Hillberg & Burke, with necklaces designed specifically for Build Together.

Build Together in Saskatchewan is growing to include the four pillars of the program – Women, New Canadians, Indigenous and Young people, and with that, Lyle Daniels has taken on the role of Inclusion Manager to help Build Together grow. Lyle, along with Kate Walsh and Lindsay Amundsen of CBTU delivered Media, Lobby and Cultural Awareness Training. Build Together will partner with Lyle to do some community

events in the coming year and hopes to put the media training and lobbying skills to good use.

Looking ahead, Build Together will be hosting a Spring Fling BBQ to raise funds for the Regina Transition House and plan on sponsoring a movie night for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Build Together Saskatchewan will continue to look for opportunities to partner with charitable organizations to give back.

The Office to Advance Women Apprentices opened up in Saskatchewan, and Build Together looks forward to supporting the OAWA at events and through mentorship opportunities.

Build Together Saskatchewan would like to continue building relationships with the local unions and like-minded organizations to promote careers in the trades and Continue Mentorship of Women and Youth.

Build Together’s Nova Scotia Chapter will be turning one year old in April, growing from three members to 11. Members of the Chapter have taken active roles, designing a Build Together NS logo and creating social media channels. Members participated in Halifax’s Pride Parade and created stickers to distribute at that event. Several members represented Build Together at events including Women Build Nations, job fairs, Try-A-Trade, highschool visits and the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum’s inaugural “Supporting Women in the Trades” Conference. The Chapter has also participated in Media and Lobby Training, with plans to attend more events throughout 2019. Individual members have seen great success, starting leadership roles in their Local Unions and on the job site:

• Brittany Colburn started a new role with Labourers’ Local 615, where priorities include attracting more women to the trade and working with Indigenous groups throughout mainland Nova Scotia.

• Samantha Hawco recently received her Red Seal in welding. • Ashley Currie started with a company in December 2018, and was

quickly promoted to Foreman. She’s now responsible for a crew of five to seven people.

Other initiatives this Chapter is engaged in include outlining the history and contributions of tradeswomen, and a document to help prepare apprentices for what they can expect in a career in the trades. As recruitment of new members continues, another goal for 2019 includes identifying community partners to work with, including the Office to Advance Women Apprentices opening this spring.

The newly formed Chapter has worked hard to establish their goals and values for the future. Bâtir Ensemble TN a été crée en mai 2018, et nous sommes passé de 10 à 17 membres. Nos interventions de proximité avec d’autres femmes dans les métiers continuent d’être notre principale préoccupation, surtout avec les femmes qui sont membres de la Société de développement des ressources et l’Office pour l’avancement des femmes apprenties. Bâtir Ensemble TN donnera une grande priorité aux activités de bénévolat dans leurs communautés respectives au cours de la prochaine année tout en faisant la promotion dans les écoles secondaires et dans les salons d’emploi d’opportunités économiques pour les femmes.

Bâtir Ensemble TN continue à mettre à contribution les travaux réalisés par et pour les femmes dans les métiers partout à Terre-Neuve-Labrador.

Le chapitre Bâtir Ensemble, Nouveau-Brunswick a été créé en février 2019; c’est un chapitre à co-bannière en partenariat avec New Boots. Le chapitre Bâtir Ensemble de la Nouvelle Écosse célèbre le premier anniversaire de sa création en avril. Le chapitre est passé de trois à onze membres. Les membres du chapitre travaillaient en collaboration pour la conception du nouveau logo et la création de nouveaux canaux sur les médias sociaux. Les membres ont participé au défi Pride à Halifax et ont créé des collants pour distribution pendant cet événement. Plusieurs membres ont représenté Bâtir Ensemble aux événements comme les femmes qui bâtissent les nations, les salons de l’emploi, les visites dans les écoles secondaires pour promouvoir les métiers et la toute première conférence sur le soutien des femmes dans les métiers organisée par le Forum canadien sur l’apprentissage. Le chapitre a aussi participé à la formation sur les médias et la pression politique et prévoit participer à d’autres événements de ce genre en 2019. Différents membres ont eu beaucoup de succès personnel en accédant à des postes de direction dans leur Section locale et sur les chantiers de travail :

• Brittany Colburn a commencé un nouveau poste auprès de la Section locale 615 des journaliers, dont la principale priorité sera d’attirer davantage de femmes et de peuples autochtones dans les métiers de la construction partout en Nouvelle-Écosse.

• Samantha Hawco vient de recevoir le sceau rouge en soudage. • Ashley Currie a été engagée par une nouvelle entreprise en décembre

2018 et a vite été nommée contremaître. Elle est maintenant responsable d’une équipe de cinq à sept personnes.

D’autres initiatives qui ont été entamées par le chapitre comprennent l’histoire des contributions des femmes dans les métiers, la création d’un document pour préparer les apprenties sur le parcours à suivre dans leur vie professionnelle ainsi que l’identification de partenariat communautaire pour nous aider avec notre objectif de recrutement 2019, particulièrement le Bureau pour l’avancement des femmes apprenties qui ouvrira ses portes ce printemps.

avec Lyle pour organiser des événements communautaires dans l’année à venir et compte mettre à bonne utilisation les nouvelles compétences acquises en relation avec les médias.

Bâtir Ensemble compte organiser un barbecue de printemps pour faire une collecte de fonds pour la maison de transition de Regina et tiendra une soirée de cinéma pour le programme des Grands-Frères/Grandes Sœurs. Nous sommes toujours à la recherche d’occasions de travailler en partenariat avec des organismes de charité.

Le bureau à l’avancement des femmes apprenties a ouvert ses portes en Saskatchewan, et Bâtir Ensemble compte travailler en collaboration avec le bureau pour organiser des événements et des occasions de mentorat.

Nous poursuivrons notre travail de renforcer nos relations avec les syndicats locaux les organismes connexes pour promouvoir les carrières et le mentorat auprès des femmes dans les métiers.

Bâtir Ensemble Saskatchewan a eu une année très chargée avec des engagements de prise de parole

pour la promotion des femmes dans les métiers spécialisés, la participation à diverses formations et les présences aux conférences.

Nous avons également organisé des activités réunissant des centaines de jeunes étudiantes à participer à un salon sur les métiers, une Campagne de collecte de fonds pour Pâques au profit d’un refuge local, des activités de réseautage et présentation de la conférence des métiers de la construction de la Saskatchewan, la présente à la conférence sur les femmes qui bâtissent les nations et Congrès d’investiture du NDP. Nous avons organisé notre premier brunch annuel pour la fête des Mères et collecte de fonds et nous avons lancé une campagne de colliers conçus par Hillberg et Burke, spécifiquement pour notre chapitre Bâtir Ensemble.

Bâtir Ensemble en Saskatchewan s’appuie sur les quatre piliers du programme, les femmes, les nouveaux Canadiens, les peuples autochtones et les jeunes et nous avons nommé Lyle Daniels à titre de gestionnaire de l’inclusion pour favoriser l’expansion de Bâtir Ensemble. Pour Bâtir Ensemble Manitoba, l’année a été très occupée. Les membres ont participé à la marche annuelle des femmes et les sœurs ont assisté aux causeries Déjeuner STEM organisé pour les métiers.

Les membres ont pris la parole à différents événements, y compris un panel sur Building HerStory devant les enseignants et les étudiants lors de l’événement Compétences Manitoba. Elles ont offert des services

de mentorat pendant le Salon des carrières en construction au Manitoba et l’événement Try-A-Trade. D’autres événements incluent la Conférence des sœurs dans la fraternité, les femmes bâtissent les nations, le soutien des femmes dans les métiers et une démonstration contre le projet de loi 28 ainsi que la prise de parole à l’Assemblée législative du Manitoba.

Il y a eu beaucoup de couvertures médiatiques lors des entrevues que les membres de Bâtir Ensemble ont accordées aux médias. La participation à la vie communautaire inclut le bénévolat pour Habitat pour l’humanité.

En partenariat avec le Centre C.-B. pour les femmes dans les métiers qui encouragent toutes les travailleuses spécialisées à réaliser un projet de construction pour aider un centre communautaire pour les femmes dans les quartiers les plus démunis de Vancouver.

Adoption d’un nouveau langage progressif pour élargir l’adhésion au chapitre Build TogetHER, C.-B. pour toutes les femmes qui désirent travailler dans les métiers de la construction ainsi que toutes les autres femmes qui ont de l’expérience dans l’industrie de la construction.

Création d’un programme de reconnaissance au moyen de certificats qui seront remis aux entrepreneurs, syndicats, dirigeants syndicaux et dirigeants d’affaires qui soutiennent les femmes dans les métiers.

Bourse de 1 000 $ octroyée à une apprentie qui suit es cours de formation dans un établissement reconnu par le syndicat où sa formation porte sur l’avancement des femmes dans les métiers.

Présentation et prise de parole à la conférence organisée par les métiers de la construction C.-B. sur les femmes qui bâtissent des nations ainsi que des présentations au centre de détention des femmes du Fraser Valley, aux étudiantes du secondaire qui ont assisté au salon sur les carrières en technique et les métiers Delta, et aux femmes en rétablissement après des relations abusives au Centre communautaire.

Hébergé une table sur pendant la Fête du travail au PNE.

Développement d’une vidéo de présentation.

Bâtir Ensemble Alberta a eu une année très chargée en 2018. Les membres ont assisté à plusieurs

événements et en ont organisé d’autres. En plus de leurs interventions à proximité, les membres ont vendu les 100 colliers Hillberg et Berk fabriqués sur mesure. Elles ont aussi créé des ensembles de boucles d’oreilles et de colliers en série limitée qui sont maintenant en vente. Les membres de Bâtir Ensemble Alberta n’ont pas été à l’abri des nombreux défis auxquels la province de l’Alberta doit faire face en 2018. Bâtir Ensemble Alberta maintient une perspective positive axée sur la solidarité et la force de ses membres. Nous vous donnerons très bientôt plus d’information sur notre prochaine participation à un projet du marché du travail et vous communiquerons d’autres histoires sur les travailleurs syndiqués de la construction au nom de l’Institut d’histoire du travail de l’Alberta.

Depuis un an, le chapitre d’Alberta participe à plusieurs événements, y compris les présentations à l’école élémentaire A. Blair McPherson.

Nous avons aussi été présentes à d’autres événements, comme le dîner-conférence sur l’économie d’inclusion avec le député Randy Boissonnault, la période de questions pour les invités de madame la ministre du Travail, Christina Grey, et une séance de portes ouvertes organisée par la Fédération du travail de l’Alberta. La réception des MNA de l’Alberta organisée par Bâtir Ensemble, compétence Alberta, le concours d’apprentissage organisé par le Conseil de district des travailleurs du fer structural, divers événements de lobbying politique et autres événements communautaires, y compris le Slugfest Solidarité.

Bâtir Ensemble a organisé son premier tournoi de curling qui a été un succès retentissant! Il y a de nombreux autres événements auxquels nos membres participeront et nous prévoyons une autre année très chargée!
