Pittsworth 100 ………………………………………….Rod Sams The postponed 1st Round of the Queensland Long Course Offroad Championship was held at Pittsworth over the weekend of 19th – 20th of July 2003. Organised by the Millmerran Auto Club this was the first time the venue had been used.

Trevor Burgess

David and Daniel Canell

The fifteen kilometre course is situated on a number of properties about five kilometres east of Pittsworth. The layout was tight and twisty in a number of areas with some open running on old shire

roads. The whole area was covered with small (and large) rocks that were picked

up and thrown out by the competing vehicles. Twenty-one crews made it through scrutineering and arrived at the track on Saturday afternoon to do the recce of the course and prologue. The fastest time of 7m15s was set by Laurie and Janelle Svenson (101) from Tony Fehlhaber and Gary Howle (138) – 7m29s. Troy Crane and Damon Ward were third in 7m 41s. The attrition had started early with three cars not completing the prologue. After winning Saturday’s qualifying Laurence found there was a fault with the transmission slipping, but after a quick trip back to Brisbane he was able to rectify the problem by 2 am. They reloaded the car and caught 3 hrs sleep before returning to Pittsworth ready for the start on Sunday morning. While the Svensons headed for Brisbane the local property owners provided a good meal for everyone. Trevor Burgess also showed a tape of a major offroad event that had been run in South Africa.

The Svensons

The event was run over two sections on the Sunday, each consisting of three laps. The long hours of work on Saturday night had paid off for Laurie as he showed a cloud of rocks to the rest of the field. At the end of the first section Fehlhaber was in second place followed by Andrew and Monique Manning (305).

Page 8: ˇ - bscc.asn.au · Month Day Date Event Details Fri 18th Marque Sporting Car Club Touring Assembly, K Mart Plaza Canon Hill Sat 19th V8 Touring Cars Queensland Raceway, Willowbank

Stephen Muhling and Robert Heinrich (573) had been pushing the Nissan 750 to be in 4th place. Steve Charlton and Peter Cowley (231) were the best of the Class 2s while John Moore and Michael Collins (427) had Class 4 to themselves. Rod Graydon and Aaron Harvey (707) had a good run in Rod’s new Suzuki Vitara. Of the twenty starters fourteen crews finished the section. Seventeen starters lined up for the 2nd section. Sevenson again dominated from Fehlhaber. Andrew Manning drove consistently to finish third outright and take the Class 3 honours. Steve Charlton won Class 2 from Mark Andrew and Colin Gaven (295) and Trevor and Reece Burgess (222). Second in Class 3 were David and Daniel Cannell (310). Moore did not start the heat in his Baja. Although the course was quite tough in places the four Class 5 entries finished the whole course. Mulhing was the best from the Datsun 1600 of Athol and Scott Willcox. The Chaffey brothers in a Datsun 240K followed them. Andy Stewart’s Cortina rounded out the Class 5s. Rod Graydon took the Class 7 prize.

Errol Younger

Others to finish the heat were Errol Younger and David Russo in their V8 powered Hilux (828). Jim Duff (926) who had problems in the first heat had things sorted out and managed to post the second fastest time for the heat. In all, a very good event for the first time at the venue. Congratulation goes to the Millmerran Auto Club on their efforts and if all goes well we will return next year. Results elsewhere in the Magazine. Pics courtesy of Fred Berge.

The next Queensland event will be the National in October, which BSCC will be

running in conjunction with the Goondiwindi Motorsport Club.

I remember when … By Sheridan Hetherman As the 50th anniversary dinner approaches at warp speed, I have had the privilege to reminisce with a few of the past members and associates of the BSCC. Now my history is similar to many members, where the family has been involved for generations, (the Hetherman’s can clock up 3 generations at the Goondiwindi off-road). Dad got involved back in the early 70’s, the romantic era of paisley polyester shirts, long side burns and BDA Escorts. I was as tall as the grill on Henk Kabel’s car, (my job to pull grass out of the radiator). Mum used to send the kids off with dad, while she got to read a book in peace and quiet. Fragments of memories kaleidoscope into one, after all I was only little. The eighties and nineties are a little clearer, (only just) and it is here that in the past 20 years we have seen most of the changes to modern day rallying. I can recall the form of communications at a rally was a piece of paper under a rock where the start control was to be with the time the zero car had started the stage. A guesstimate on how long it would take was worked out and then after a period of time, the first car was sent through. Hopefully not to catch the Zero Car. Then came CB radios and if you could get reception then great, it worked like a charm. Rallying started in the afternoon and went into the night. Super Oscar spotlights were a great Christmas gift idea to the novice driver in his first year of rallying. We had Driver classes back then. One started out as a Novice, progressing to Clubman and you aimed for State and so forth.

General uniform for rallying was a short sleeved t-shirt, jeans and sandshoes or your overalls. No fancy driving suits were found here! A long stage in rallying was approx 40 to 50 k’s and certainly sorted the men from the boys! Tyres, you ran on what you brought. If you were lucky you were able to get second hand ones with some tread left on them. We only had one zero car, and someone to put the road blocks in and the sweep, well he could have been anywhere from two minutes behind the last car or two hours. (Sweep was sweep, recovery, and cleaned up the bunting etc all at the same time). Roadbooks had more instructions to the page, (saved the trees). Timing was different, even in some events we had forward ½ minute timing. The beginners rally up at Beerburrum in February was a fun event. A mixture of rally and road cars on road tyres, lap sash seat belts, helmets and lots of first timers and a field of up to 70 plus! Rallying is vastly different nowadays. The ARC is a huge example. ARC’s not so long ago were “marathon events” with up to 400 plus competitive kilometres being traversed. Radio Base consisted of one person from 6.00am to whenever, sitting on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere with only the drop bears for company. Now, there are three different radio networks, tracking devices that get bounced off aeroplanes in the sky, relay stations and split times through stages housed in the luxurious surrounds of a holiday resort. Yes rallies of today certainly require a lot more personnel and certainly run on time, safer (?), etc, however costs continue to rise and new challenges are forever placed in front of

organisers who continue to excel. The hours and hours of organisation that goes into each event haven’t changed nor does the satisfaction when the event has finished. As the club celebrates 50 years in motor sport, it can hold its head high, with the continued professionalism that it shows, the pride in that when others fall by the way side, the club picks up the responsibility and shoulders it bravely. BSCC would be one of the few remaining clubs that can boast that it has organised its state round of the ARC since the inception of the championship in 1968 and continues to host State championship rounds. As current members, you are forming the club’s history every week, every event. Take pride in the achievements, and learn from those that have been there and done it hard! I hope you will be there to raise a toast to the pioneer members of BSCC whose footsteps have paved the way so that we can build on them and leave a legacy for future generations. The technology may have changed, the paperwork increased, and the cars become more sophisticated, but no matter what, we will still need someone to pull the grass from the radiators … Cailin, Where are you?

Dear Competitor

KCF SHORT COURSE RALLY – RND 2 Unfortunately due to a lack of entries (16), this event has been cancelled. I would like to thank those who did enter for their support of this series, who without, there would not be a series. I would also like to thank all the officials who would have been at Jimna and those out on the stages for volunteering their time, for supporting US, the competitors and myself, without them we could not have some fun in the forest. I also apologise to the people of Jimna who support myself and the BSCC for letting us take over their township for 3, sorry, 2 weekends a year, they will miss out on the income the event brings into their small community. In the last ten years of my involvement with rallying, it’s a shame and I suppose a sign of the times that competitor numbers have been dropping. For the series to continue and OUR sport to continue, we need to attract more people to club level events. To do this, competitors will have to start supporting events by entering as many as they can and bringing along family, friends and even sponsors. These events are compact and relatively cheap to enjoy for everyone and if numbers do not start to turn around, unfortunately these events will disappear. KCF Rallysport have also been a long time supporter of this series and rallying in general and it would be a huge shame to lose that support from Keith. If I wasn’t Clerk of the Course for this event, I would certainly be competing, with the challenging roads, cheap costs, time in the seat and a chance to escape the city, it is worthwhile making the journey up to Jimna. These events take a lot of time to prepare, organise and co-ordinate on the day. Time which my two daughters and wife probably should benefit from, but I choose to put something back into our sport that I enjoy so much. So in closing (now that I’ve had my whinge), I would appreciate competitors out there to get off their backsides and start entering more events – who cares if you throw on a set of old tyres and if you can’t afford the fuel or entry, at least show your ugly mugs at controls and help those who are willing to give up their time away from families (like others do for you) and share the load. And if there is anyone out there that has stopped rallying or heaven forbid doesn’t want to compete in this series, then let me know and they can take over (Clerk of the Course) so that we’ll have at least one more entry – ME!. Yours faithfully Mark Neary Clerk of Course

My First ARC

MEDIA RELEASE: Co-driver Angela Fackrell is about to make her competition rally debut. Having worked in the family business of K C F RALLYSPORT means that this is definitely not her first time in a rally car. 3 years running as Zero and Sweep cars has given Angela the experience as a co-driver at an official level, which has given her great practice using pace notes and good experience with road book system. CAR 41 – Mark Neary / Angela Fackrell Rally Queensland started for us with reconnaissance all day Thursday through to scrutineering on Friday and the official start being held at King Beach, Caloundra on Friday evening (to be honest I think my nerves and I started the rally the week before) THE START, well I don’t know how many people were there but the promotional start was obviously very well received, I even had to give my autograph!! The event proper then started bright and early Saturday morning (my alarm went off at 5.30AM!!) with me going to headquarters to check on start times / bulletins etc. Back to the motel for a bit of breaky (had with nerves and milk) before heading off to the forest. We arrived at Imbil Service Park and I felt an atmosphere that I can’t explain. The whole event has an ‘atmosphere’ that is felt by all involved. From the officials to the top competitors, it is a big event and it makes people lift their game with what ever they are doing. Some of the things I think may contribute to this are…

1. Your competing with the national teams of Subaru, Mitsubishi, Toyota etc 2. Entry Fee, you pay the money, you act accordingly 3. In a short course / clubman and to a degree a QRC, if you don’t do well, or act

professionally it is only in front of your immediate peers. But line up at a ARC and look at the preparation of the major teams, their presentation etc and you make sure you are not the hillbilly rally team, it becomes personal pride in your sport at a higher level.

4. Starting and finishing the even in the middle of a tourist strip, hundreds of people lined up to see your car and team, no matter what your position is on the road.

To me the event was full of excitement with the pressure on to be an efficient co-driver. I think this event is the only real chance QRC competitors have to feature in a national event, one that is looked upon favourably by the locals who get fully behind it. In conclusion I would personally like to thank Errol Bailey and his team for making it a well-organised and enjoyable event. I’d better thank Mark for giving me this opportunity – had a ball and I can’t wait till the Rally of Melbourne and a big thankyou to my service crew, especially my sister (Collette) and my dad (Keith) who left his Escort at the workshop and serviced for us!! We had a fantastic event, we won our class on Saturday (Heat 1) and came 17th outright and we were leading our class Sunday (Heat 2) by 2 ½ minutes but unfortunately we broke a drive shaft at a creek crossing but it wasn’t bad for my first ARC.

By Angela Fackrell.

JIMNA HIGH COUNTRY ENDORO ………… ROD SAMS Following the postponement of the first round at Pittsworth and the cancellation of Gatton the first Long Course Offroad event for 2003 was run at ‘Kimbala’ over the weekend of the 28th and 29th of July. With a new look organising team lead by Rod Graydon the event was run on a similar format to previous events run by SEQORRA at the venue. Despite the lack of racing this year, or because of it, the event only attracted 20 starters. Prologue was won by John Brand (287) from Andy McKay (305) who was 11 seconds behind. The Sevnsons (307) were 3rd a further 8 seconds back. Laurie was having a ‘back to the future’ trip in Warren Walkers Class 3 buggy.

The event was run over three sections with two laps on Saturday and two lots of 3 laps on Sunday. The event was eventually won by Laurie and Janelle Svenson in the Class 3 buggy in a time of 3hr:00:25. I believe this car is up for sale for anyone who wants a thoroughly tested machine.

The hapless John Brand and Co

The hardluck award of the event

has to go to John Brand and Russell Hartnet who were leading the race quite comfortably only to have rear suspension collapse on their buggy within sight of the finish line. Second home was Stephen Muhling and Robert Heinrich in their V8 powered Nissan ute (573) with a time of 3hr:16:27. They were followed by Warwick Leven and Rick Walshaw (238) in 3hr:22:34. The other class winners were Class 1 Tony Fehlhaber (138) and Class 7 Colin Hunter (720). Des Armitage (998) ran a consistent race to take the Class 9 honours from Jim Duff (926). From all accounts a good weekend was had by all with the weather being much kinder than the cool conditions of previous years. Pics courtesy of Fred Berge

THE FINKE DESERT RACE Rod Sams Round 1 of the Australian Offroad Championship got underway in the desert outside Alice Springs over the 6th – 9th of June 2003.

The Tattersalls Finke Desert Race is arguably Australia’s premier off road racing event. It has built a compelling reputation over 28 years as being both challenging and pure excitement. “The Finke” as it is known, is now one of the biggest annual sporting events in the Northern Territory. It is

recognised as the richest Off Road Race in the Southern Hemisp

with the added reputation of being one of the most difficult courses in one of the most remote places in the world. The winners cheque

Teagle Excavations Pines Enduro …… Rod Sams

Following to demise of the Kempsey event Round 2 of the Australian Offroad Championship was run at Millicent over the weekend of 5th and 6th of July 2003. The event was also the 1st round of the South Australian State Championship. A very good field of 93 entries were received for the event.

Three Queensland crews made the long trek south – Laurie and Janelle Svenson (101), Geoff Pickering and Glen Watson (701) and Colin Hunter and Priscilla Winter (808)

Colin Hunters Class 8 Jeep Cherokee

A near perfect day weather wise greeted the competitors on Saturday for the Prologue. The large crowd of spectators who had gathered at Teagle's Quarry were treated to some very spectacular racing not only in the Prologue but also in the Dash for Cash. David Fellows (968) blitzed the field in the prologue by 9 seconds to be first followed by Hayden Tatnell (910) in second with Mark Burrows (1) third.

Laurie Svenson finished the prologue in 5th spot while Pickering was in position 36 and Hunter was 40th.

The Dash for cash was run with the two fastest cars in each class competing over two laps of a shortened Prologue track. David Fellows and Hayden Tatnell provided the crowd with plenty of excitement during their dash. Hayden was the eventual winner.

Once again the weather was a near perfect winters day for the main event on Sunday. A large crowd was on hand to witness good racing and many changes of the lead and misfortunes during the day. At the end of 9 laps it was David Fellow (968) from Alice Springs the outright winner with a time of 3h27m54.00secs. Second outright was Mark Burrows and Colin Hodges (Aus 1) in a time of 3h35m57.29secs. Third was Garry Turnbull and Chris Proud (179) in a time of 3h42m49.30secs.

Mark Burrow flying high to second Outright

Danny Auright and Brian Shearn (108) finished fourth with Doug Petty and the "Toyota Chicken" (930) fifth outright and second in class nine. Sixth outright and first in class 4 was Greg Gartner and Jamie Jennings (403). David and Malcom Simpson (125) finished seventh outright. Robert Knott and Brendan Kelly (408) had a good run to end up second in class four and eighth outright. Ben and Luke Erceg (250) put in a consistant drive to win class two and be ninth outright. Tenth was the son and mum combination of David and Annette Oakley (371) and also first in class three.

Geoff Pickering and Glen Watson in the Mitsubishi Pajero (701) took class seven honours and thirteenth outright. Class five was won by Darren Thorne and Samantha Brackstone (511) in sixteenth. Class eight went to Matthew Owen and Matthew Ryan (809) in twenty second place outright. Second in class 8 went to Ivan Robertson and Marilyn Emmins (802). 24 cars completed all nine laps.

Unfortunately the Svensons suffered drive train problems and only managed to complete six laps. Colin Hunters Jeep only lasted three laps. (Information courtesy of the Offroad Racing in Australia web site)
