Hidden messages
Most products have a bar code – a Unique Product Code – which is scanned when the product is purchased.
Price Database
When the barcode is scanned the product details match up with the EPOS (electronic point of sale) computer system in the store.
This in turn sends back the price which is then printed on the receipt.

Great technology
Most organizations have Electronic Point Of Sales terminals.
These are the tills in stores, which are connected to a main computer, that contains a huge database, which contains all product details and prices.
EPOS systems allow stores to keep detailed records of what is sold, at what time, by which sales assistant and at which till.
This system allows stores to forecast sales based on previous detailed history of sales.
Goods are automatically re-ordered based on sales.

Electronic Funds Transfer at Point Of Sale (otherwise known as EFTPOS) is the method used to transfer money from a customer’s credit or debit card account to the organization’s bank account.
This means that customers do not have to carry large amounts of money.
It is better than writing a cheque as there is no maximum limit, as long as there is enough credit or funds available in the customer’s account.

Some people believe that records are better kept on paper and locked in a safe place, than
stored electronically on a computer.
What do you think?
