What is FAS?

• Fatal Alcohol Syndrome, also FAS, is a birth defect syndrome caused by the mother’s intake of alcohol during pregnancy. 1 in every 750 infants are born with a pattern of physical, developmental, and functional problems each year in the U.S.

• The spectrum of alcohol- related diagnoses includes: FAS, Fatal Alcohol Effects (FAE), PDAS ( Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, ARND (Alcohol Related Neurodevelopment Disorder, or ARBD (Alcohol Related Birth Defects.

Effects are PERMANENT and cannot be outgrown.

• FAS/FAE babies and young children may have these features:

• Short Stature• Small and thin• Difficulty with eating• Difficulty learning how to talk• Physical problems such as hearing defects,

organ imperfections or bone problems

Smoking during Pregnancy• Smoking during pregnancy doubles the woman’s risk of

having a stillbirth baby. • Low birth weight can result from poor growth before

birth, preterm delivery or a combination of both.• Premature and low-birth weight babies face an increased

risk of serious health problems during the newborn period, chronic lifelong disabilities (such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning problems) and even death.

• Babies who are exposed to smoke suffer from more lower-respiratory illnesses (such as bronchitis and pneumonia) and ear infections than other babies. Babies who are exposed to their parents’ smoke after birth also may face an increased risk of SIDS. A child exposed to smoking at home during the first few years of life also is at increased risk of developing asthma.

What is Kawerak?• After the passage of ANCSA, BSNA organized Kawerak ad the

regional non-profit corporation to provide services throughout the Bering Straits Region. Today, Kawerak contracts with the state and federal government to provide services to residents of the Bering Strait Region, 75% of whom are Eskimo, Aleut or American Indian, descent. Kawerak's organizational goal is to assist Alaska Native people and their governing bodies to take control of their future. With programs ranging from education to housing, and natural resource management to economic development, Kawerak seeks to improve the Region's social, economic, educational, cultural and political conditions. Kawerak is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the president (or designee) of the IRA or traditional Councils, two elder representatives and a representative from the regional health care provider. Kawerak reorganized in 2006 and we now have four divisions.

Shishmaref Environmental Program

• As a student at the Shishmaref School, I am working with Brice, the EPA Manager. Recycling pop cans is the main thing that is happening right now. What I am going to do this coming year is providing pop can boxes in public places. So, I hope that my plan to recycle pop cans will stay in progress throughout the year.

Lunch

• Include a variety of foods from at least three of the four food groups: Vegetables & Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alternatives, and Meat and Alternatives. Children are eating too much fat, sugar, and salt, and not enough vegetables, fruit, milk products and whole grain foods. Unhealthy lunches at school are part of the problem.

Dinner

• Many people go out to eat in restaurants that doesn’t have any healthy foods. They would mainly go for pizza, hamburgers & fries and anything that has a lot of fat. I would recommend people to eat a whole serving of grains, vegetables and fruits.

Reflection• Throughout all of the levels life life skills, I have learned

a lot about what to expect when I am living on my own. I have learned how much money I’m going to have to be making in order to live on my own. I thought that it wouldn’t take as much to have my own place, but it actually does. Also, helping others is a really important thing to do because there are people out there that really need help. I have done a few things that have a positive effect to our community. Today, I am developing a plan to help increase the amount pop cans being recycled. When I help those who have said, “thank you” that meant a lot because I have done something that they appreciate.
