What Does the Research Say About Improving Attendance?
• The pattern of non-attendance starts early
• Intervention in elementary years is the most effective
• Whole school approaches are the best
• A welcoming, supportive school environment is key
• Engaging, relevant instruction improves attendance
Research continued...• Relationships are key
• Incentives for good and improved attendance make a difference
• Early and on-going contact with family improves attendance
• Clear and consistent attendance policies are necessary
• Timely and appropriate supports for learning are important
Attendance Projects
• Started in September 2011 – two year grant to 15 school divisions
• Focus of grant: evidence based practices that improve student attendance
• Projects vary from single school initiatives, to clusters of schools within a division

Community Involvement
What we have learned so far…
• Manitoba has very good average attendance
• Attendance concerns are complex
• Students with attendance from 80% and up tend to “fly under the radar”
• Interventions need to be targeted to specific groups of students
Next Steps
• Use data to inform our actions
• Provide a clear message to students, parents, community that regular daily attendance is critical for student success
• Implement evidence based practices in schools
• Continue to build partnerships
Our Goal
