Party DownThe first of many festivals has

passed as we celebrated in high styleFrench Quarter Festival. But we stillhave many more Spring parties andevents coming up so let’s get started. On both Mondays of my two weeks Imet some friends at the Tulane AvenueBar to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race. This is a fun neighborhood bar that getsa good crowd on Monday nights. It isa laid back atmosphere with drink spe-cials and food. Also, if you guess whogets kicked off, you receive a compli-mentary cocktail. Now this is way toenjoy must-see TV.

On Thursday of both weeks, I sawsome of the most amazing local theat-rical productions. Week one I saw“The Night of the Iguana” at the Art Klubon Elysian Fields and the followingweek, I saw “The Normal Heart” at theAllways Theatre. Southern Rep is atits finest with their newest productionof Tennessee William’s The Night ofthe Iguana. The Art Klub warehouseon Elysian Fields in the Marigny pro-vides a perfect location for this play. The audience truly feels like they havebeen transported to a “tropical para-dise” where an assortment of charac-ters find themselves at the end of theirropes, much like the iguana tied to thepost in the show. And Larry Kramer’sThe Normal Heart is truly New Or-leans local theatre at its best. Broughtto the stage by Jonathan Mares Pro-ductions, The Normal Heart is a sear-ing snapshot of the AIDS crisis in NewYork between 1981 and 1984 as seenthrough the eyes of Ned Weeks, awriter and activist, played brilliantly byNick Shackleford. Directed by KrisShaw, the play kept me mesmerizedfeeling a mixture of many differing emo-tions: anger, disbelief, compassion andmost of all fear. The entire cast of TheNormal Heart works like a well-oiledmachine to create an unforgettablenight of theatre.

Friday was a complete “wine” downevening. I began the night going to theopening of Bin 248, a unique wine, beerand spirits shop located at 2801 Maga-zine Street. Opened by the owners ofTujaque’s Restaurant, their ExecutiveChef was there creating some culinarydelicacies as guests shopped andsipped some of the merchandise. Af-terwards I went to a spontaneous old-

school porch party. I love this citywhere a two people sitting together ona stoop can draw a crowd and beforeyou know it, there is a group of friendssharing some laughs, drinking somewine (mostly the wine we just bought)and enjoying each other’s company.

Each Saturday was devoted toGay Easter Parade fundraisers, withthe first one being the Purple Party atDouble Play. This annual event drawsa crowd of enthusiastic Easter partici-pants clad in my favorite color (can youguess). Owners Chuck and Bill pulledout all the stops with lots of food, auction items and good music. Wefollowed up the night by stopping at theCorner Pocket to see some more bas-kets.

On Sunday, the Gay Carnivalkrewes have started their fundraisersfor the upcoming 2015 Mardi Grasseason. I attended two of them begin-ning with Amon-Ra’s Bunny Reject Partyat Oz and ending with Petronius’ Craftin’and Cocktails. The Bunny Reject eventis a fun parody in conjunction with theseason, as three contestants gave ittheir all in categories like swimwear, talent and evening gown. Each one hada basket to auction off full of goodies,I was lucky enough to win the JohnnyPassion basket. In the end, Jeremyproved victorious and wins a carriage inthe Gay Easter Parade. Keeping withthe Easter theme, Petronius had guestsbuild their own bonnet. A gay personwith a glue gun can be a very danger-ous and sparkly thing.

The following weekend began onFriday with another Petroniusfundraiser, this time it was a Fish Frycomplete with lightly breaded catfish, creamy mac and cheese, cole slawand very decadent desserts. On Sat-urday, was the second Gay EasterParade fundraiser in the two weekperiod at The Four Seasons Lounge inMetairie. The 12th Annual Spring FeverExtravaganza had great performersand lots of auction prizes. The weatherwas beautiful and it was an amazingnight to enjoy a courtyard soiree.

Sunday Funday took the all daypartying to the extreme, like many thingswe do in the Crescent City. My friendsBeaux and Barrett joined me at FrenchQuarter Festival as we tried variousdishes and enjoyed the music on thisgorgeous day. In the afternoon, wewent to the first of the Halloween NewOrleans fundraisers as Oz. It was likeTea Dance on steroids; there was aplethora of handsome muscular men intank tops that I thought I was in acasting call for America’s Next Top GayMale Model. After we had our fill of eyecandy, the most non-fattening form, wetraipsed to our friend Jose Luis’ pool/birthday party. There were many well-wishers on hand to celebrate with himas he hosted a fabulous crawfish boil. And no night would be complete with-out visiting a few of the gay establish-ments before calling it a day.

That concludes my two weeks offun, rest up my pretties because JazzFest is knocking at our door.

Tony’s Tidbits ofWisdom

Recently, Halloween New Orleansheld its first host party beginning thefestivities for one of New Orleans’ mostprominent events in the gay commu-nity. Halloween XXXI is slated forOctober 23 – 26, 2014. I urge you tobecome a host this year if you have notbefore. There are many reasons tobecome a host in addition to helping aworthy cause. You get the VIP experi-ence for the four-day extravaganzaand enjoy monthly host parties leadingup to the big event.

What is a host? Halloween Hostsare the core of the organization. Thehosts fee helps raise more for ProjectLazarus and thus allows them accessto the VIP areas of the Friday andSaturday parties (along with t-shirtsand gift bags). Halloween New Or-leans have the hosting system becausemoney is needed earlier in the year fordeposits on locations and other ex-penses. This year hosts that pay be-fore September 1, 2014 receive a dis-count. 100% of what is made eachyear goes to Project Lazarus.

There is also a first-time host pro-motion sponsored by Avita Drugs Phar-macy. They will match $100 of the Hostdonation for new Hosts meaning theypay $300. It’s a great way to becomea part of the Halloween Host family. For more information on becoming ahost or Halloween XXXI, go towww.halloweenneworleans.com.

To Quote A QueenSince Jazz Festival is just around

the corner and music is in the air. Ithought I would share some quotes ofone of my favorite musicians, EltonJohn. He is flamboyant, generous, truly talented and his music remainstimeless. I mean anyone who can getus doing the Crocodile Rock has to befabulous.

“When Little Richard used to standup and play it was just fabulous, andLiberace had the candlesticks and therings and the gift of the gab. The piano’sis the most ungainly rock’ n’ roll instru-ment of all time but those two peopletranscended it, as did Jerry Lee Lewis.”

“If you write great songs with mean-ing and emotion, they will last foreverbecause songs are the key to every-thing. Songs will outlast the artist andthey will go on forever if they are good.”
