Why is there no “d” in Lilypons By 1930, the Three Springs Fisheries was doing such a tremendous business, shipping goldfish and waterlilies to all parts of the world, that the postal phase of its transactions became a major problem.

The fisheries were shipping through the Frederick post office, nearly 10 miles away. At the request of the fisheries, postal authorities agreed to establish a post office at the Three Springs headquarters.

In choosing a name for the postal address, the authorities suggested a single word, something short and descriptive. One of the postal officials, a Lily Pons fan, suggested her name. It was an ideal name he pointed out, one already well known and certainly very descriptive of the locality.

So Lilypons it was. It became official in 1932. The opera singer was delighted. In 1936, Lily Pons came to Lilypons to see the lily ponds. The famous singer kept in touch with the little community and had her Christmas cards sent from the post office until her death.

Changes in the 1970’s Charles B Thomas, grandson of G.L. Thomas, changed the name from Three Springs Fisheries to Lilypons Water Gardens. It was a natural change, as the 5 and 10 stores were closing and the invention of plastic and fiberglass liners made water gardening more affordable for all. Charles’ love was for

the waterlilies, which he hybridized several himself.

How we started In 1917, G.L. Thomas bought Three Springs Farm, a 360-acre spread of rolling countryside in lower Frederick, County, MD.

Mr. Thomas was destined, it seemed at the time, for a career in the canning business or in large scale farming. During the early days of his career, he converted 15 acres of his farm into ponds, purely in the interest of beautification. As a part of this program, he cultivated a fringe of water lilies and other aquatic plants around the perimeter of each pond. Planting stocks of healthy brood goldfish was the next natural step.

And by 1930, Three Springs Fisheries was known as the largest goldfish and decorative water plant farm in the world.

Garry Wagner Exclusive Introduction by Lilypons Water Gardens —a purple hardy lily hybridized by Mike Giles in celebration of our 100th anniversary.

Mike Giles started hybridizing waterlilies in the mid 1990’s inspired by our 1994 catalog! In celebration of our 100th anniversary he offered us a spectacular purple hardy waterlily with enough quantities to grace the cover of our catalog. We are very appreciative to Mike in helping us celebrate our 100th anniversary, with the Exclusive Introduction of Garry Wagner.

Garry Wagner worked for Lilypons Water Gardens from 1963 to 2016, and for our pond cleaning customers he was the face of Lilypons! He passed away in August of 2016 and his wishes were to not have a service, or even an obituary in the paper. Garry started cleaning ponds for our customers in the 1970’s and I dare say there is no one in the world that cleaned more ponds than Garry Wagner! He was such an integral part of Lilypons reaching our 100th anniversary, that we felt it appropriate to name a lily in his honor.

HOW TO DIVIDE A LILY One or two years after planting, look for overcrowding and reduced blooming. Hardy waterlilies and other surface growers will begin to bunch above the water’s surface. For improved plant health, aesthetics and to separate new plants, do the following:

| STEP 1 | Lift each plant container from your pond.

| STEP 2 | Remove the plant from its container.

| STEP 3 | Rinse the soil off of the rootstock.

| STEP 4 | A main growing tip with a few juvenile growing tips will be visible on a large rootstock. Cut off the old rootstock end.

| STEP 5 | Leave 4-6" of healthy rootstock with the main growing tip. Discard the old, woody rootstock end and cut off the juvenile crowns.

| STEP 6 | Repot the trimmed rootstock (make sure to add fertilizer) and replace the container(s) in your pond.

Do not divide or transplant too late in the season; the plant needs a chance to get established before dormancy. Spring is the best time.

| STEP 1 | Outline your desired area with a garden hose or large rope. Make size and shape adjustments now, before you dig. Use a string, stakes, and a carpenters square for ponds with sharp angles such as a square or a rectangle. For a circular pond, use a central stake and measure outward evenly.

Sides should slope slightly inward from top to bottom at about a 75̊ angle. Pond depth can be checked during excavation by using a board and a tape measure. Most ponds are 18"-24" deep. The pond bottom should slope slightly toward one end. This will facilitate draining and cleaning the pond.

| STEP 3 | Check your excavation’s top level. This is critical to making sure that water does not pour over one side, and leave your liner exposed on the other. Place a straight 2" x 4" board on edge across the excavation, hold a carpenter’s level on top of the board and verify the level at various points around the rim. Adjust the soil rim to make perimeter level.

| STEP 4 | Cut a shallow 12"-15" wide ledge beyond the rim for any intended coping other than simple fieldstones or sod. Complete the final digging and shaping, and check all depth and leveling measurements one last time. Sides and bottom should be closely inspected for any sharp rocks or protruding tree roots. Line the bottom of the excavation with about 1" of sand to cushion and protect the liner. An underlayment of geo-textile material should used to cover the excavation sides, for extra protection of your liner.

| STEP 5 | Carefully unfold and drape the liner into the excavation. Do not drag the liner across the ground. Most liners take two people to maneuver. Drape the liner loosely into the excavation with an

even overlap all around. Hold liner in place with bricks or smooth stones. They can be eased off as the filling of the pond pulls the liner into place.

| STEP 6 | It can take several hours for a large pond to fill. After the pond is filled, begin the edging process. Do not trim any liner until entire edging/ coping is complete. Trim overlap leaving a flap 6"-12" wide around the entire pond.

| STEP 7 | For a natural rock ledge lay your coping to extend an inch or two over the pond protecting the liner from ultraviolet rays.

| STEP 8 | With your installation complete, you need only to fill your water garden with the beautiful plants and fish you like best. For installing more elaborate ponds or waterfalls check out Ortho’s, “All About Building Waterfalls, Ponds, and Streams” (pg. 45).

Keeping Your Pond Clean + Healthy Keeping your pond clean and healthy is simple when you have the formula.Essential to your pond’s well being are such items as submerged plants, scavengers, pumps, filters, and some preventive medicine. Here’s how you do it.

The Proportions » Cover 60-70% of pond surface with waterlilies (pg. 4-19) or floating bog plants (pg. 24-31).

» Stock one bunch of submerged plants (pg. 37) per square foot of pond surface area for ponds up to 100 square feet. One bunch per two square feet for ponds over 100 square feet.

» Stock scavengers at the same rate as submerged plants (pg. 37).

» Stock up to 1" of goldfish (1/2" of koi) per 5 gallons of water (pg. 37).

» Re-circulate and filter the total volume of water in your pond once every 2 to 6 hours, depending on your filter selection (pg. 47-50). The ultimate clear water enhancement is an Ion-Mate (pg. 51).

The Set Up» Fill your pond with water. Use Stress Coat if you have treated water (pg. 41).

»Plant and place your aquatic plants in your pond, including submerged plants. See diagram above for height placement. Use a combination of barley (available in straw, pellet or liquid form, (pg. 59) and a beneficial bacteria such as ponsparkle, (pg. 57).

» Wait two weeks. Your pond water cures during this time and your pond is creating its own eco-system. The water will probably turn green. Do not drain your pond. Algaecides are not required, but may be used to kill unwanted algae. You’re observing a very natural, healthy process. To test this put your hand in the water about 6" below the surface and you should be able to see your hand perfectly. If you have a UV clarifier or Ion-Mate this phase will be eliminated and your water will not develop a dark green color, (pg. 51). Another alternative is to use deep water, a dye that will turn the water black, (pg. 59).

» Add your fish and scavengers.

» Sit back and enjoy your tranquil oasis.

1. Calculate the total gallons of your pond – rectangle = length x width x depth x 7.5; Circle = 3.14 x depth (1/2 diameter x 1/2 diameter) x depth x 7.5

2. Take into consideration the type of pond that you have and where you live. If you plan to have koi, choose a filter that can handle twice the capacity of your pond. If you live in zones 8 or above, add an additional 1/3 to your total gallons. And yes, if you live in zones 8 or above and have koi double and add 1/3.

3. If your pond is stocked according to the directions on pg. 46 and your pond is lightly stocked with fish a mechanical filter should provide adequate filtration. It is economical and since you have balanced your pond naturally, maintenance shouldn’t be excessive. Choose the PMK filter for your size pond (pg. 50).

4. If your looking for ease of maintenance and crystal clear water and your pond isn’t overloaded with fish and has at least 1/2 of the required plants, then a pressurized filter should work great for you. Try the Pondmaster, Tetra or Laguna pressure filters (pg. 48-49).

5. If you have Koi and/or large fish, then biological filtration is best for you. Try either the filter falls below or any of the filters on pages 48-49.

The AquaSphere PRO works by consuming the excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the pond, eliminating unwanted organic matter and preventing pond issues which can arise at any time. If the nutrients are not available for growth, the growth is unable to develop.
